The Trump administration is falling far short of its goal of having 300 million N95 respirators available in time for the flu season, according to internal documents reviewed by Yahoo News. N95 respirators protect wearers against the coronavirus better than cloth or surgical face masks; the name refers to their ability to filter out 95 percent, or all but the smallest, of particles. According to a briefing document circulated on Monday to senior officials in the Department of Health and Human Services, the government now has 87.6 million N95 masks available, far short of the 300 million promised several months ago.
US Sen. Mitch McConnell and his challenger in the Kentucky Senate race, Amy McGrath, are sparring over upcoming debates. It all started when Mr McConnell sent a press release from "Team Mitch" accusing his opponent of potentially backing out of a debate in October. In a press release issued Monday, Ms McGrath's campaign alleged that "Amy is ready and willing to debate Mitch, but Mitch is afraid to take the stage unless he dictates every detail."
Documents obtained by The New York Times show officials in President Donald Trump's administration pressured the Centers for Disease Control to relax guidelines for school reopenings earlier this summer. Dr. Deborah Birx, a physician on the White House Coronavirus Task Force directly took a role in asking the CDC to include documents that undermined the threat of coronavirus to school-aged children in mid-July. In early July, Trump criticized the CDC for advising schools to not reopen.

A new advertising campaign from anti-corruption non-profit RepresentUs uses deepfake technology to deliver a message about democracy. In two different videos, deepfake representations of Russian president Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un say that Americans don't need foreign interference to ruin their democracy. The campaign is intended to be shocking, and drive viewers to take actions like volunteer to work at polling stations and check their voter registration.
If President Trump's calls for his Democratic challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, to join him in taking a drug test before or after Tuesday night's presidential debate were ever serious, they gained little traction. NEW: Joe Biden's campaign agreed to an inspection for electronic ear pieces at tonight's debate several days ago but are now declining, a source familiar tells me. The Trump campaign's unfounded speculation that Biden is planning to cheat — whether via electronics or performance-enhancing drugs — during the debate has coincided with their insistence that the former vice president is a strong debater, which runs counter to their usual depiction of him as a gaffe-prone candidate whose mental fitness should be called into question.
A 71-year-old mother was found dead after school officials asked police to do a welfare check at her home, according to Texas police. Teachers at the Forney Independent School District “sensed something was wrong” Friday when two students were absent and their parent could not be reached, a district spokesperson told McClatchy. The boys, ages 5 and 7, had not been in class since Monday, Sept. 21, according to KTVT.

Aviation safety expert and famed pilot Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III said that during the pandemic, he will only fly on airlines that leave middle seats empty. Sullenberger, who is known for landing a damaged plane on the Hudson River in 2009, saving all 155 people on board, cited a study from MIT that found that leaving middle seats empty halves the risk of catching the novel coronavirus during a flight. Sullenberger's comments came during a podcast interview with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

The students told a resident advisor about the fake threat and police were notified, KPRC reported.
A former federal prosecutor who worked on the Watergate scandal has said Donald and Ivanka Trump could be imprisoned for “tax fraud” after leaving the White House. Asked during an appearance on CNN whether the US president could face charges for years of alleged tax evasion following the publication of his tax records this week, Nick Akerman said there was “no question about it”. “And his daughter could go to jail, too,” said he added of Ivanka, a White House adviser who was also named in a bombshell New York Times report on Mr Trump's financial filings.
The lead attorney for U.S. President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn on Tuesday revealed to a federal judge that she has discussed the ongoing criminal case with the president, an extraordinary admission that raises questions about political interference. U.S. Justice Department lawyers denied any corruption or political motives in efforts to get the federal criminal case against Flynn dropped. In May, Attorney General William Barr stunned many in the legal community by ordering prosecutors to have the case dropped, a decision that came after Trump repeatedly complained that Flynn was being treated unfairly.

It said his relatives were trying to raise enough money for him to stand down from the force, and take care of his family.
Wyoming is appealing for hunters in the United States to visit their state and shoot as many goats as possible, in what one official termed "every hunter's dream". The 100 mountain goats in the Grand Teton National Park are considered by state and federal officials an invasive animal, and a threat to the region's bighorn sheep. A helicopter was sent to kill the mountain goats in February, and the gunmen on board managed to shoot 38 goats - a third of the population - in one day.

“Enfranchising 16-year-olds would be good for them and good for our democracy.”
“At 16, most kids have little awareness of politics, civics, or American history.”
“Voting is habit forming...which underscores the importance of having as stable an environment as possible for the youngest voters.”
“Keeping the voting age at 18 is not a slap at 16-year-olds. It is recognition that an informed electorate is the best kind.”
“When young people’s participation lags badly, issues important to them receive short shrift in the public discourse.”
