A day before the House is expected to vote on bipartisan legislation that would form a 9/11-style commission to investigate the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has come out against it. In a statement released Tuesday, the California Republican said that "there are ongoing bipartisan investigations into all facets of the Jan. 6 events," including a review of security vulnerabilities at the U.S. Capitol, and that nearly 500 arrests have already been announced by the Department of Justice. "The renewed focus by Democrats to now stand up an additional commission ignores the political violence that has struck American cities, a Republican congressional baseball practice and, most recently, the deadly attack on Capitol Police on April 2, 2021," McCarthy said.
Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territories went on strike in a rare collective protest Tuesday as Israeli missiles toppled a building in Gaza and militants in the Hamas-ruled territory fired dozens of rockets that killed two people. U.S. officials said the Biden administration was privately encouraging Israel to wind down its bombardment of Gaza. Egyptian negotiators also were working to halt the fighting, and while they have not made progress with Israel, they were optimistic international pressure would force it to the table, according to an Egyptian diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing diplomatic efforts.
Albert Watkins, the attorney for Jacob Chansley (perhaps better known as "QAnon Shaman"), spoke on the record with Talking Points Memo about his client's alleged role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. In the interview, published by TPM on Tuesday, Watkins used shockingly offensive language in an attempt to defend Chansley's alleged actions, saying Chansley has Asperger's syndrome, and asserting that other participants in the riot have intellectual disabilities that were to blame. "These are people with brain damage," he said.
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Andrew Giuliani, the son of embattled former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, on Tuesday announced his candidacy for the 2022 Republican nomination for governor of New York, aiming to replace scandal-ridden Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo. Touting his father's success in reducing crime in New York City before leaving office in 2001, the younger Giuliani said he would make New York state a better place, particularly for businesses hit hard by the pandemic. "The man was able to accomplish what I hope to accomplish in New York state, which is turning around what many people think may be an ungovernable place," Giuliani said at a news conference in lower Manhattan, with New York Harbor as a backdrop.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday slammed the House's Jan. 6 commission deal, and in the process appeared to throw Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.), the Republican he reportedly tasked with negotiating the legislation, "under the bus." In a statement, McCarthy specifically complained that the commission was too narrow.
The Government's planning rules must not "rip the heart" out of rural communities, Tory MPs have warned, as they said if done wrong it could cost the party votes. During the final day of debating the Queen's speech, James Sunderland, the Conservative MP for Bracknell, urged for the building of "more affordable homes" to be done so in "areas that have the capacity to absorb it". Meanwhile, former Tory minister Crispin Blunt added that it was opposition to the planning proposals which led to the Conservatives losing overall control of many district and borough councils in the recent local elections.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating whether rapper-actor Clifford “T.I.” Harris and his wife, Xscape member Tamika “Tiny” Harris, drugged and sexually assaulted a woman. Allegations that the celebrity couple frequently recruited, drugged and assaulted women at their Atlanta home began in late January when a former friend, Sabrina Peterson, made the accusation and invited women who'd been victimized to share their experiences. Dozens then made claims, which T.I and Tiny vehemently denied.
Last summer, when the State Farmers Market began building a new driveway out to Lake Wheeler Road, it hoped to have it open in time for Thanksgiving. The state agreed to put off finishing the final section of the drive after the city raised questions about its compatibility with other planned changes at the intersection of Lake Wheeler and Maywood Avenue. Specifically, the city is considering adding a traffic light at Maywood and Lake Wheeler, as well as sidewalks along both sides of Lake Wheeler, said Kevin Kidd, an engineering reviewer with the city.

A plane has flown a banner above US District Court in Orlando, Florida reading “Tick Tock Matt Gaetz” as the GOP congressman's ally Joel Greenberg pleaded guilty to sex trafficking a minor, among other charges, potentially aiding prosecutors in a related investigation involving the Republican congressman. Mr Greenberg, a former Florida tax collector, appeared in court on Monday after admitting to introducing a “minor to other adult men, who engaged in commercial sex acts” with her, according to a lengthy plea agreement filed on 14 May. The other men were not named. Mr Gaetz was not named in court documents filed in US District Court on Friday.

UN scientists previously warned that the islands are at risk due to the effects of climate change, the New York Times reported.
Coronavirus vaccine coverage is substantially higher in urban areas across the country than in rural communities, where hesitancy remains a “major barrier” for public health officials, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found in a new study published Tuesday. The CDC examined county-level vaccination data across all 50 states from December through early April, finding that 38.9% of residents in rural counties had received at least one vaccine dose, compared with 45.7% in urban counties. “This was true for counties across the country, across all age groups, and among men and women,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told reporters.

Former vice president Mike Pence has attempted to blame Joe Biden for the outbreak of violence between Israel and Palestine. In an op-ed for National Review on Monday, Mr Pence argued that the Biden administration was undoing the efforts of his government, and has created an environment for tensions to increase. A major contributing factor of the violence was restrictions placed on Gaza by the occupying Israeli government during the Holy Month of Ramadan, such as shutting the Gate of Damascus.
A lawyer for the associate of Rep. Matt Gaetz who on Monday pleaded guilty to six felony counts and agreed to cooperate fully with prosecutors teased "must-see television" when asked whether his client had information that could harm an elected official. Fritz Scheller, an attorney for Joel Greenberg, spoke with reporters Monday after Greenberg pleaded guilty to sex trafficking, wire fraud, identity theft, stalking, and conspiracy. Even though Gaetz is not named in Greenberg's plea deal, it is sure to be unwelcome news for Gaetz, as Insider's Sonam Sheth reported.
As COVID-19 case counts and deaths continue to climb in the U.S., critics have accused the Trump administration of downplaying the extent of the virus and delaying crucial steps needed to combat the spread. While public health officials warned President Donald Trump early this year about a potential outbreak, social media posts claim Dr. Anthony Fauci sounded the alarm about an infectious disease outbreak years earlier. “Anthony S. Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said there is 'no doubt' Donald J. Trump will be confronted with a surprise infectious disease outbreak during his presidency,” reads a July 10 Facebook post of a screenshot from an article.
A “shadow trial” of advanced eye-tracking technology will be conducted in the Super Rugby Trans-Tasman tournament in Australia and New Zealand as part of World Rugby's bid to tackle head injuries by improving the detection of concussions. The virtual reality technology, known as NeuroFlex, is set to be used during matches as part of the head injury assessment (HIA) process under a partnership between Rugby Australia, Rugby New Zealand and World Rugby. NeuroFlex records horizontal and vertical movement of the eyes and head movements and, within seconds, analyzes that data and generates a report which helps medical personnel diagnose and manage concussions.
Joe Rogan, one of the most popular podcast hosts in the world, drew mockery and criticism after he claimed on his show that straight white men were being silenced because of "woke" culture. In an episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience" last week, the host spoke to standup comedian Joe List about evolving boundaries of what makes for acceptable comedy. “Can you make a good comedy movie anymore, or have they made it so dangerous in terms of being canceled that comedy movies are no longer something you can do?” Rogan asked.
US senator Tom Cotton drew criticism for suggesting the Associated Press (AP) was acting in collusion with Hamas, after an Israeli strike on a building that housed news organisations' offices in Gaza. After the 12-story building was blown-up by Israel on Saturday, the country's intelligence agencies alleged that the AP building was actually a base for Hamas — a Palestinian terrorist group. It follows the UN issuing a warning of “full-scale war” between Israel and Hamas, after days of fighting in and around Gaza.
