Viewers apparently couldn't peel their eyes away from the first presidential debate Tuesday night. Despite widespread criticism of the chaos that unfolded on stage, the final 15 minutes actually rated slightly higher than the opening 15 minutes, and audiences fell just 2 percent from the 9:30 p.m. ET peak by the time it all wrapped up, Nielsen data shows.
After a three-week manhunt, a Los Angeles man was arrested and charged Wednesday with attempting to murder two sheriff's deputies who were ambushed as they sat in their car. Deonte Lee Murray, 36, is facing two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and possession of a firearm for allegedly walking up to the squad car parked outside a Metro station on Sept. 12 and opening fire, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday. “They became victims of a violent crime for one reason: They wear a badge,” L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said in a press conference.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of a mid-air crash between a Marine Corps fighter jet and another plane in a remote part of Southern California earlier this week. According to the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona, the collision occurred on Tuesday afternoon as the F-35B jet swiped a Lockheed Martin KC-130J tanker around 4:00pm. A statement from the station said the jet pilot “ejected successfully and is currently being treated” and that no other injuries were reported.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met with Speaker Nancy Pelosi Wednesday afternoon to present the Trump administration's coronavirus relief proposal, according to a Democratic aide, after House Democrats unveiled their own revamped $2.2 trillion package earlier this week. Mnuchin and Pelosi met for around an hour and a half, and then Mnuchin went to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office. "We will be proceeding with our vote tonight on the updated HEROES Act in order to formalize our proffer to Republicans in the negotiations to address the health and economic catastrophe in our country."
Prosecutors charged a 36-year-old man Wednesday with a brazen ambush of two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies earlier this month, an apparently unprovoked shooting as they sat in a squad car outside a rail station. The deputies suffered head wounds in the Sept. 12 attack and have since been released from the hospital. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said their recoveries will be a long process and include further reconstructive surgeries.
President Donald Trump might have choked on his Egg McMuffin on Wednesday when tuning into his favorite morning show. Fresh from an aggressive debate performance which his campaign chalked up as a victory before it had even happened, Trump most likely tuned into Fox & Friends expecting the kind of sycophantic flattery he's become accustomed to over the past four years. All three of the hosts—Brian Kilmeade, Steve Doocy, and Ainsley Earhardt—made clear how deflated they felt the morning after the debate.
House Democrats postponed a vote Wednesday on a $2.2 trillion COVID-19 stimulus bill in the hopes a deal could be reached as negotiations drag on with the White House on a plan to help Americans struggling from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. The vote was postponed until Thursday to allow House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and White House negotiators more time to discuss a potential bipartisan deal, said a Democratic aide, who was unable to discuss internal deliberations publicly. Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met at the Capitol Wednesday for their first in-person negotiations since August.
While at the company, Alles saw a massive increase in the price of the cancer drug Revlimid — and Porter broke down just what it got Alles in return. Porter started her takedown by asking Alles if he knew what a Revlimid pill cost in 2005: $215, she reminded him with the help of a whiteboard. And by the time Alles left the company last year, after its sale to Bristol-Myers Squibb, a single Revlimid pill cost $763.
Myles Cosgrove is one of the two Louisville police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in March. This weekend, Cosgrove's family started an online fundraiser to raise $75,000 so he can buy out the rest of his service time and retire from the force early to "focus on the safety of his family." The family wrote in the campaign page that "it has recently become clear that it will be impossible for Myles to safely return to his position."
President Donald Trump's handling of the pandemic was a hot topic during Tuesday's debate, including Joe Biden's claim that 1 in 1,000 Black Americans have died due to COVID-19 — and that it could be 1 in 500 if Trump doesn't act quickly. The Democratic nominee appears to be at least partially right. “Actual death rates from COVID-19 data ... have reached new highs for all race groups: 1 in 1,020 Black Americans has died (or 97.9 deaths per 100,000),” the report said.
A federal judge has rejected a request from a Libyan military commander who once lived in Virginia to toss out lawsuits accusing him of war atrocities. At a hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Judge Leonie Brinkema said the accusations against Libyan National Army leader Khalifa Hifter are “very problematic and they're allegations of some very, very serious conduct.” Hifter, once a lieutenant to Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, defected to the U.S. during the 1980s and spent many years living in northern Virginia.
Christin Evans, a student at SFU, was accused of wanting to stab her three white roommates at her Texas dorm but police cleared her of any wrongdoing A Black student in Texas had guns pointed at her after cops barged into her room in response to her roommates allegedly filing a false report. President Trump's family appeared to flaunt local ordinances while attending the presidential debate on Tuesday, removing their face masks after taking their seats at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Tyler Page, a reporter with Bloomberg News, tweeted that "according to the Cleveland Clinic, it's a requirement that all [debate] guests wear masks" and that "a Cleveland Clinic doctor with masks … walked up to a number of unmasked members of the audience on Trump's side of the room and asked them to put on masks. She told me they refused to take one and wear them."
Top diplomats from the U.S., Australia and India plan to gather in Tokyo next week to discuss their common regional concerns, such as China's increasingly assertive actions, in the first face-to-face ministerial meetings Japan will host since the coronavirus pandemic began. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told reporters Tuesday that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, and India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will meet for talks Oct. 6.
The happiest place on Earth is a lot less happy this week after Disney announced it would be laying off 28,000 staffers from its parks division. "As hard as they try to make those cutbacks only affect behind the scenes issues, it eventually comes to the guest," Dennis Speigel, founder & CEO of International Theme Park Services, told USA TODAY. Disney's layoffs will alter already topsy-turvy theme park visits for guests, if they even choose to go at all.
President Trump has spent the last year trying to find a way to throw Joe Biden off his game and strip him of his status as front-runner in the presidential race: Tuesday night, he unloaded all his attacks at once in a remarkable display of invective and interruption. Rather than crack, however, Biden shot back, not as forcefully as Trump, but with enough strength to rebut the overwrought caricature Trump has tried to create of the 77-year-old as a doddering, tongue-tied “Sleepy Joe.” Trump, 74, entered the debate trailing badly behind Biden as he has for most of the year.
Public health experts agree: winter with the coronavirus is going to be difficult. Just make sure "you don't bubble with someone, who then bubbles with someone, who then bubbles with someone," one public health expert said. Winter with the coronavirus approaches, and not even America's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has a solid plan.
A federal court said it would uphold a Federal Trade Commission decision to block a proposed merger between two leading Wyoming coal companies. The FTC had said a merger between Peabody Energy Corp. and Arch Resources Inc. would have created a monopoly that could have resulted in higher energy prices for customers, said Rob Godby, director of the Center for Energy Economics and Public Policy at the University of Wyoming College of Business. A U.S. District Court upheld that opinion on Tuesday.
Donald Glover revealed in a new interview that he struggled to define and come to terms with his sexuality. Speaking to "I May Destroy You" creator Michaela Coel, Glover said he was unsure of his sexual orientation during his college years. Glover also told Coel that he "never felt completely safe in just one place" due to experiences with racism growing up.
The first of three scheduled debates between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden was ugly and unwatchable almost from the start. There was no handshake — because of COVID-19, of course — but that lack of simple comity became an apt metaphor for the verbal brawl that followed. Within minutes, Trump began his trademark juvenile taunting, and he kept it up during the entire 90-minute encounter.
A Dave Matthews Band fan died after a chair thrown at a Missouri concert venue hit him in the head, a lawsuit says. Jasen Smith, his wife and friends attended the May 2019 concert at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, Missouri. According to the lawsuit, employees of Live Nation who were cleaning up the concert venue had been throwing chairs from a grassy lawn area to a sidewalk below.
After preying heavily on the elderly in the spring, the coronavirus is increasingly infecting American children and teens in a trend authorities say appears fueled by school reopenings and the resumption of sports, playdates and other activities. Children of all ages now make up 10% of all U.S cases, up from 2% in April, the American Academy of Pediatrics reported Tuesday. About two times more teens were infected than younger children, the CDC report said.
Kelly Ripa spoke to Insider about how she plans on spending her upcoming 50th birthday on Friday. The "Live With Kelly and Ryan" cohost, who's promoting her partnership with Persona Nutrition, told us that it'll be "really hard" celebrating the milestone without husband Mark Consuelos (who's in Vancouver filming season five of "Riverdale") or their other family members. The talk show host said that her birthday will most likely be "very simple and probably quiet," and she'll spend the day with her kids.
ESPN analyst and former NBA guard Jalen Rose said he thinks a fourth championship would put LeBron James on the NBA's Mt. Rushmore. Rose said it would not be enough to move James ahead of Michael Jordan in the "greatest of all-time" debate. Rose said Jordan's two separate runs of three straight championships shows he was more dominant in his era than James.
“Staggered term limits would ensure that electoral winners shaped the Supreme Court, not the Grim Reaper.”
“Term limits undermine the primary function of the judiciary: preventing political majorities from trampling on others’ rights.”
“It would be one important way we could deescalate the stakes of American politics, and protect the system from total breakdown.”
“It would depoliticize the court and judicial selection, and thus promote the rule of law.”
“There are also transition problems...at some point the complications become more trouble than they’re worth.”
