Democratic congressman says 'it will not end if the Senate does not convict'

Rep. Al Green, who has been on a “mission” to remove Donald Trump from office, is not optimistic the articles of impeachment unveiled by House Democrats on Tuesday will succeed in a Senate trial, but the Texas Democrat says he still thinks the push to force the president out of the White House won't end there. “If the Senate does not convict, that does not mean that it's over,” Green said in an interview with Yahoo News shortly after the articles were unveiled. “It simply means that for these two charges the president has not been convicted and he is still in office, which means that he is still subject to impeachment for other charges,” he said.

Nude portrait of Emiliano Zapata in high heels sparks fury in Mexico

A new portrait of Emiliano Zapata has caused a firestorm of outrage for its portrayal of the Mexican revolutionary hero striking a seductive pose – clad only in a pink sombrero and high heels. Furious campesinos stormed one of the country's most renowned art museums on Thursday to demand the removal of the painting, part of a new exhibition titled Zapata after Zapata that seeks to present alternative views of the Mexican revolution. The small painting by Fabián Cháirez depicts a naked Zapata, astride a white horse.

Why Can't Russia Replace Its Old Submarines Fast Enough?

In March 2017, Russia's new Yasen-class nuclear attack submarine Kazan launched at the northern port city of Severodvinsk. The Russian navy — already badly depleted since the collapse of the Soviet Union — can't quickly replace most of its existing nuclear submarine fleet, which is approaching the end of its collective lifespan. The outcome will likely mean a shrinking of the Russian nuclear submarine force in the years ahead.

Nine-year-old Belgian prodigy drops out of university

A nine-year-old Belgian boy who was due to graduate in electrical engineering has dropped out of his Dutch university due to a dispute over the end date of his degree, his father said Tuesday. Young prodigy Laurent Simons hit the headlines worldwide when it emerged he was on course to receive his degree from the Eindhoven University of Technology in December and become one of the world's youngest graduates. But his father Alexander told AFP he had now quit because the university wanted to delay his degree until next year, while insisting his son now had new plans.

FAA predicted Boeing 737 Max, facing more delays, would crash 15 times over its lifetime

As the process of recertifying the Boeing 737 Max is sure to stretch into 2020, a House committee released documents Wednesday showing the Federal Aviation Administration predicted the troubled jet had the potential of being involved in 15 crashes over its service life if changes weren't made. In revealing the document, Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, noted that the report came after the first crash of the 737 Max last year. Together, the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines accidents killed 346 passengers and crew.

Airstrikes called in as Taliban attempt to breach Bagram Air Base

A series of airstrikes were called in following a failed attempt by the Taliban to breach Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, on Wednesday, according to a Resolute Support spokesman. U.S. and Afghan forces were pulled into a nine-to 10-hour firefight after a suicide bombing targeted a medical facility that was under construction near the base, a source on the ground told Military Times. Taliban fighters then barricaded themselves inside the medical facility they attacked and were hit with a series of airstrikes Wednesday evening, according to a Resolute Support spokesman.

Delhi rapist-murderer cites pollution in death row appeal

One of four Indian men on death row over the infamous 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder appealed against his sentence on Tuesday citing pollution. Akshay Kumar Singh was one of a group of men who gang-raped a 23-year-old woman on a bus in India's capital late at night in December seven years ago. Her case and death -- 12 days later from extensive internal injuries -- sparked national protests and international horror, and became synonymous with India's high rates of sexual violence against women.

U.S. prosecutors seek to jail Giuliani associate in campaign finance case

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday asked a judge to jail an associate of U.S. President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani while he awaits trial, saying he lied about his wealth when he negotiated his bail. The prosecutors said in a motion filed in Manhattan federal court that Lev Parnas, who is charged with campaign finance crimes, poses an "extreme risk of flight." Parnas, a U.S. citizen who was born in Ukraine, was released on bail after his arrest in October and has been living under house arrest in Florida.

The push comes in anticipation of a Democrat-controlled General Assembly that will take office in January. State lawmakers, along with Gov. Ralph Northam, have promised Virginians a host of stricter gun laws as Democrats take full power in the state for the first time in decades.
