NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Monday moved to bar almost all immigrants from applying for asylum at the country's southern border, requiring them to first pursue safe haven in a third country through which they had traveled on the way to the United States. The American Civil Liberties Union called the new rule "patently unlawful" and vowed to file a lawsuit. The rule would make it all but impossible for applicants seeking protection from persecution unless they first apply for asylum in "third country" such as Mexico or Guatemala, through which they traveled en route to the United States.
Tom Steyer entered the 2020 Democratic presidential race on Tuesday, pledging to spend $100 million on his campaign. Steyer adds nothing to the 2020 race, but he can stick around because of his wealth. That is a problem and an indictment of the US political system.

The bail amount was not made public by the ministry following the closed-door court hearing over the shooting of Solomon Teka in Kiryat Haim near the northern port city of Haifa.
Egypt on Saturday opened to visitors the 4,600-year-old “bent” pyramid, a 101-metre tall structure located just south of Cairo considered a landmark in the evolution of pyramid building. The pyramid was built in Dahshur around 2,600 BC by the fourth dynasty pharaoh Sneferu. The bent pyramid and the nearby “red” pyramid, also built by Sneferu, mark a transition from “step” pyramids, whereby the ancient tombs were constructed in several tiers, to the more well-known smooth-sided pyramids.

Authorities in St. Tammany Parish, 50 miles north of New Orleans, said the area "may have dodged a bullet" when Barry gave the area only a glancing blow. But residents were urged to look for other dangers on social media: "If the area you live in has high water, watch out for snakes and other critters who are trying to escape the flood waters as well," the Fire Protection District warned on Facebook.
At the European election, the Labour party put in its worst national performance in almost a century. A recent poll by YouGov put the party in fourth place, trailing not only the Conservatives but the Brexit Party and Liberal Democrats, too. Corbyn, a lifelong euroskeptic socialist, has been reluctant to oppose Brexit, leaving the party unable to capitalize on the unpopularity of leaving the European Union.
Donald Trump begins the week embroiled in a racism row after attempting to exploit divisions among the opposition by telling young progressive congresswomen like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came”, demanding an apology from the victims in his latest round of tweets. Despite boasting of a 94 per cent approval rating among Republicans, the president finds himself lagging behind Democratic 2020 challengers Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in a new poll conducted for NBC News/Wall Street Journal.

In an open field on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa, workers in black uniforms, surgical masks and red hardhats toil under a scorching sun to dig up bodies from a large mass grave discovered last month. All of the dead are men, women and children believed to have been killed or died during the Islamic State group's rule over the northern city, once the de facto capital of the extremist group's so-called Islamic caliphate and the site of atrocities committed by the group against residents who opposed its extremist ideology. The group at the time commanded large swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq that it administered based on its own radical version of Islamic rule.

Just in time for next week's likely House vote on a federal $15 minimum wage, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has come out with a caustic report on the consequences of the policy. The report confirms what even liberal economists caution: A $15 minimum wage would “risk undesirable and unintended consequences” and lead to a survival-of-the-fittest labor market, where only the highest-skilled workers come out on top. The Congressional Budget Office report estimated that a $15 minimum wage would lead to 1.3 million lost jobs by the year 2025, with job losses rising over time due to compounding negative impacts.

Leaders across the Balkans have expressed frustration at what they say is stalling by the EU over when they can become part of the world's biggest trading bloc. Concerns flared two weeks ago when, after a marathon session of wrangling over who will take the EU's top jobs, Macron said there would be no further enlargement unless “deep reform” of the EU happens first. During a visit to Serbia Monday, where he met President Aleksandar Vucic, Macron again said that “Serbia is destined to join” but that expanding the bloc without changing the way it makes decisions would cause problems for everyone.
Donald Trump's racist tweets urging Democratic congresswomen to “go back” to the countries they came from have provoked widespread outrage, but Republicans have refused to condemn the remarks. A spokesman for Mitch McConnell, the Senate's majority leader, declined to comment on the remarks and representatives for GOP leaders in the House have also chosen not to respond to requests for comment.

If we truly want to end the migrant crisis at our border, there must be a Marshall Plan for Central America. We've heard many calls for such a plan, most recently from 2020 presidential candidate Julian Castro in the first Democratic debate. A Marshall Plan today would provide the most important thing the people of Central America need: Hope. For that is exactly what the original Marshall Plan did for Europe after World War II.
