Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, a white Republican, joked about going to a “public hanging” during a campaign event this weekend, a comment her Democratic challenger, who is black, called “reprehensible” and divisive ahead of a runoff election later this month. “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row,” Hyde-Smith said on Sunday morning in Tupelo, Miss. during an event with a cattle rancher. It’s unclear what context the comments were made under, although she appeared to be praising the rancher, Colin Hutchinson.
A black security guard was shot dead by a police officer as he held down a suspect in a shooting at the bar where he worked. Jemel Roberson, 26, was working early Sunday at Manny’s Blue Room ― a bar in the predominantly black Chicago suburb of Robbins, Illinois ― when a patron who was part of a drunken group that had been kicked out returned with a gun at 4 a.m. and opened fire, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Roberson, who was armed at the time, grabbed one of the men, held him down and waited for police, according to witnesses.
A quick-thinking man says he survived the raging wildfire tearing through Southern California by hiding in a creek with his dog. Matt Armbruster told CBS News that he first ignored official orders to evacuate his Agoura Hills home, which was located dangerously close to the rapidly spreading Woolsey Fire. Armbruster told the outlet that he stayed in the water for almost two hours as the fire burned around him, admitting he thought he would die there.
President Trump warned Democrats that it would be a “warlike posture” if they used their newfound House power to investigate him. The House of Representatives makes and passes federal laws, but can also serve as a check on the president. The House can begin impeachment proceedings with a majority vote.
A photo of Wisconsin high school students appearing to give a Nazi salute went viral over the weekend, prompting the school district and local police to investigate. The photo appears to show dozens of male students from Baraboo High School, about 40 miles northwest of Madison, performing the Sieg Heil, a gesture used as a greeting in Nazi Germany. “This post has since been deleted, but i just want [Baraboo School District] to be aware of the disturbing actions that are represented in this photograph,” Sidey tweeted Sunday.
An image found by Off-Road.com on a public Ford website allegedly shows the upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco in full-except it's not really the Bronco. This photo, taken at Ford's dealer meeting in Las Vegas last month, actually shows the "baby Bronco" crossover that is due to arrive soon. Announced earlier this year, the "baby Bronco" has yet to be named, but we know it will be sized like the next-gen Escape crossover and ride on the same unibody platform, but with much boxier, rugged styling.
Starting Monday, November 12 through the 18, eBay will be matching - and beating - competitors' Black Friday Circular Deals, including Target, Walmart, Macy’s and Kohls. With many retailers releasing Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals earlier than usual, this deal is a major move to elevate the brand over its competition. “Pouring over Black Friday ads has become a pre-Thanksgiving pastime for many US shoppers.
As a wildfire tearing through Northern California killed 42 people, becoming the deadliest recorded in state history, images captured from space showed thick plumes of smoke rising above California. Wildfires, including the Camp Fire in Northern California and the Woolsey Fire in Southern California, have destroyed populated areas of the state in the last week. A satellite image from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows portions of California covered in smoke, as of Monday.
Even as online platforms tightened rules for political ads, digital spending set new records in the 2018 US midterm elections and appears poised for further growth in 2020. Digital media campaign spending rose 2,400 percent from the 2014 midterms to $1.8 billion, roughly 20 percent of the total $8.9 billion in ad spending, according to preliminary estimates from the research firm Borrell Associates. Online spending, much of it on social networks like Facebook, has been a significant factor in campaigns for a decade, but tighter rules imposed by digital giants in the wake of the 2016 election could have curbed some of that growth.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that members of his country’s intelligence community had listened to Turkish audio recordings of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Trudeau’s comments, made in Paris during a peace forum to honor the anniversary of World War I, were the first acknowledgment by the leader of a Western country of receiving the intelligence from Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. “Canada has been fully briefed up on what Turkey had to share,” Trudeau said.
Trump reportedly believes, without evidence, that the Puerto Rican government has been mishandling the relief funding and using it to pay off debt, according to the outlet’s Jonathan Swan. There is no evidence that the territory has been using any of its relief funds to pay off debt obligations, and the island’s leadership has actually argued against doing so, according to The Washington Post.

“My hope is someone caught a glimpse of them,” Janes said of her aunt and uncle. At least 42 people were dead in the Camp fire, which tore through Paradise and surrounding areas, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters Monday night. The sheriff’s office did not have an update on the number of missing persons, last reported as 228 on Sunday evening.
The comments shed further light on the areas under scrutiny as investigators prepare to publish their preliminary report on Nov. 28 or 29, one month after the Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX dived into the Java Sea, killing all 189 on board. Now the investigation's focus appears to be expanding to the clarity of U.S.-approved procedures to help pilots prevent the 737 MAX over-reacting to such a data loss, and methods for training them. Dennis Tajer, a 737 captain and spokesman for Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents American Airlines Group Inc pilots, said his union was informed after the crash about a new system Boeing had installed on 737 MAX jets that could command the plane's nose down in certain situations to prevent a stall.
A second high school coach of the gunman who killed 12 people at a Southern California bar recalled him on Sunday as volatile and intimidating, and said that repeated complaints to school administrators about his behavior failed to prompt any discipline. Another time, he used his hand to mimic shooting her, Colell said, adding that she feared for herself whenever she was around him.

Advocates for overseas voters harshly criticized President Donald Trump for arguing that some mail-in ballots shouldn’t be counted as he spread a conspiracy theory about Florida’s elections on Monday. In a tweet on Monday, Trump called for the state to stop counting ballots and stick with the results from Election Night, a move that while circumventing state law would also disenfranchise members of the military and civilians overseas, whose ballots can arrive until Nov. 16 and still be counted. “These overseas and military voters, the worst thing for them is to hear our country’s leaders saying don’t count these votes,” said Susan Dzieduszycka-Suinat, president and CEO of the U.S. Vote Foundation, a nonprofit that helps overseas voters cast their ballots.
