Special counsel Robert Mueller on Friday did not recommend a specific sentence for President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen, citing his continued cooperation. “The sentence imposed should reflect the fact that lying to federal investigators has real consequences, especially where the defendant lied to investigators about critical facts, in an investigation of national importance,” prosecutors wrote in their court filing Friday.

The day after their absentee ballot arrived in the mail in September, Luis Reyes and Yomayra Torres, a couple in Robeson County, got a nighttime visitor. The woman, Jennifer Boyd, had come with another woman a few months earlier to help the couple request their absentee ballots. Reyes and Torres didn’t know who to vote for, and Boyd explained why she had voted for Mark Harris, a Republican pastor running for Congress in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District. Torres remembers Boyd saying she was with Harris’ campaign, and she told them about all the good he had done for their community but said they should vote for whomever they wanted.

Last week's magnitude 7.0 earthquake near Anchorage caused multiple problems at the sprawling Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, including damage to steel frameworks, ceilings, and sprinkler and heating systems, military officials said Friday. In fact, Air Force Lt. Col. Jacob Leck, who is originally from Idaho, expected far worse in his first-ever earthquake, he said Friday during a news briefing on the impact of the Nov. 30 quake that struck 7 miles (11 kilometers) north of Anchorage. "I thought for sure that we had significant damage and that it was going to be a catastrophic loss of some facilities," said Leck, commander of the 773D Civil Engineer Squadron and director of the base emergency operations center.
MSNBC anchor Lawrence O’Donnell said Friday that President Donald Trump “will be, must be impeached because of the crimes prosecutors say he committed” in the case of his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen. “And so the only conceivable reason why Donald Trump has not been indicted as a co-conspirator in the Cohen case is that he won the presidential election, that he conspired with Michael Cohen to illegally affect,” he explained. “Michael Cohen is facing substantial prison time for those same crimes.

Missing fragments from one of Turkey's most striking ancient treasures, the haunting, wide-eyed "Gypsy Girl" mosaic, have returned home more than half a century after they were plundered and smuggled to the United States. On Saturday, the returned pieces went on display alongside the nearly 2,000-year-old mosaic of the girl, whose piercing gaze and dishevelled hair have become a symbol of Turkey's southeastern city of Gaziantep. Turkish archaeologists discovered the mosaic 20 years ago during an excavation of the old city of Zeugma, founded by one of Alexander the Great's generals, near the modern city of Gaziantep.
Sen. Cory Booker didn't discuss any 2020 ambitions in his speech at the New Hampshire Democratic Party's post-midterm victory celebration. The jam-packed two-day trip is thought by some to be a tune up for the New Jersey Democrat's potential presidential campaign. The likely presidential contender is also set to speak at activists' gatherings in Nashua, Concord and Keene.

With their two-decade-old licenses expiring in the next four years, they need Beijing and Washington to stay on good terms. Given that Macau is the only part of China where gambling is allowed, the city’s fortunes could collapse if Beijing were to limit the flow of mainlanders, who comprise 90 percent of the former Portuguese enclave’s gamblers.
Wrapping an arm around her stomach, the young woman hung her head and recounted the day in early November when she and a friend were bound, dragged into the bush and raped by four men with guns. "I was crying and screaming but I was so far from the village that no one could hear me," she told The Associated Press, which doesn't identify survivors of sexual assault. Shock and outrage followed when the medical charity Doctors Without Borders announced that 125 women and girls had been raped, whipped and clubbed over 10 days last month in a dramatic spike in sexual violence.
Allegations that President Donald Trump directed his former personal attorney to commit felonies would constitute an impeachable offense if proven true, the Democrat set to head the House Judiciary Committee in the next Congress said on Sunday. “They would be impeachable offenses. In a sentencing memo filed on Friday, federal prosecutors stated for the first time that they believe former Trump attorney Michael Cohen “acted in coordination with and at the direction” of the president when he made hush payments to two women during the 2016 presidential campaign who claimed to have had affairs with Trump after he married his current wife, Melania.

Belgian police detained more than 400 people on Saturday after "yellow vest" protesters inspired by riots in France threw rocks and firecrackers and damaged shops and cars as they tried to reach official buildings in Brussels. In the second violence of its kind in the capital in eight days, a crowd which police estimated at around 1,000 faced riot squads who used water cannon and tear gas to keep people away from the European Union headquarters and the nearby Belgian government quarter. The movement in Belgium, inspired by the "gilets jaunes", or yellow vest, protests in neighboring France over the past month, has given voice to complaints about the cost of living and demanded the removal of Belgium's center-right coalition government, six months before a national election is due in May. French police said more than 30,000 people demonstrated there and more than 30 people were injured in a second successive Saturday of violence in Paris.
More than halfway through its 40,000-mile long-term test, the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack wagon remains endearing and practical, a great all-around vehicle that manages the rare combo of being both affordable and engaging. C/D's Montana bureau chief, John Phillips, took the car out west for a brief sojourn and had good things to say about the VW after many long days of driving, including one 827-mile stint from Wisconsin to Wyoming during which he found the comfortable seats particularly endearing. What We Don't Like: Among the minor complaints noted in the Alltrack's logbook include a hard-to-reach USB port at the base of the center stack and a sticky hand brake that, Phillips said, "sounds like metal tearing metal." These are just slightly maddening details in an otherwise top-to-bottom excellent car, which is why we just once again named it to our annual 10Best Cars list for 2019.
