On a corporate earnings call on Tuesday, Pfizer revealed it had so far been unable to conduct an analysis of a phase III clinical trial to determine whether its vaccine is safe and effective, STAT reported. Without that analysis, the FDA will not grant an emergency use authorization.

If anything can be certain in a tumultuous 2020, it's surely California and its 55 electoral votes. Since the early 1990s, the state that produced Republican Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan has gone for Democrats in presidential elections. Its reputation as the anchor of the country's so-called left coast is so entrenched that Republicans elsewhere often use California as shorthand for all things liberal.
Andrey Kostin, an ally of President Vladimir Putin and the head of Russian state bank VTB, believes that U.S. sanctions on Moscow will stay in place irrespective of how Americans vote next week, he told Reuters. President Vladimir Putin, sitting next to Kostin this week at an investment forum, complained that the Trump administration had sanctioned Russia 46 times in the last four years. Washington sanctioned Moscow after U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russia tried to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election to tilt the contest in Trump's favour, an allegation Moscow has denied.
The leader of a national white supremacist group who ran a 'hate camp' in Michigan and one of his cohorts were charged Thursday with multiple crimes, as extremist groups continue to land on the FBI's radar across the country. The latest suspects were arrested at their homes at 6 a.m. Thursday for their alleged roles in a December 2019 incident — when police said a husband, wife and their infant child were terrorized by two white supremacists who showed up on their porch in the middle of the night and took photos of their house, thinking someone else lived there. The suspects, police said, were targeting a podcaster who is critical of the neo-Nazi movement and has expressed concern about the rise in white supremacy in the United States.
The US saw a record high of 91,000 new Covid-19 cases reported on Thursday, with spikes in dozens of states just days before the presidential election. The same day, over 1,000 Americans died with the virus, as the national death toll and number of patients in hospital continue to trend upward. The US is just shy of nine million total cases, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.
The key ally in Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's coalition has called for general elections to be held to establish a stable government once the coronavirus pandemic subsides, in a new snag to his fragile hold on power. Muhyiddin, who took office in March, has only a two-seat majority in Parliament and is being challenged by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who recently alleged he has majority support of lawmakers to form a new government. The United Malays National Organization, the biggest party in Muhyiddin's government, reiterated support for his administration amid a spike in coronavirus cases but demanded polls to be held once the crisis abates.
The biggest coronavirus outbreak witnessed by China in months has been linked to a factory in Xinjiang believed to be run by Uighur people recruited through forced labour. At least 190 cases of the coronavirus were recorded in the western region of Kashgar, with reports claiming the cases originated in a factory under a state-led “poverty alleviation” effort. The outbreak represents the country's largest cluster of cases since June, when 180 infections were reported in Beijing.
Some students sympathetic to Thai protesters boycotted graduation ceremonies led by King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Friday in a show of anger at the monarchy amid growing calls to reform it. The ceremonies, at which the monarch personally hands out degrees, are a rite of passage for graduates and their families with photographs of the moment displayed with pride in many Thai homes. Suppanat Kingkaew, 23, said he was boycotting the ceremonies being held on Friday and Saturday at Thammasat University, long viewed as a hotbed of radicalism and scene of a massacre of pro-democracy protesters by royalist state forces in 1976.

But despite both of Texas' Republican senators being convinced there's a tough competition in the traditionally red state, both President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden haven't really campaigned there, The New York Times reports. Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) tight 2018 race against Democrat Beto O'Rourke was one of the first indications Texas could become a tossup in 2020. Cruz has tried to convince Trump that "we have a fight" in Texas, he tells the Times.
Former Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad stood by his widely condemned comments on attacks by Muslim extremists in France, saying Friday that they were taken out of context and criticizing Twitter and Facebook for removing his posts. Mahathir, 95, sparked widespread outrage when he wrote on his blog Thursday that “Muslims have a right to be angry and kill millions of French people for the massacres of the past.” Twitter removed a tweet from Mahathir containing the remark, which it said glorified violence, and France's digital minister demanded the company also ban Mahathir from its platform.

Between playing President Donald Trump in Democratic candidate Joe Biden's debate preparation and helping to vet Kamala Harris as his running mate, battle-tested election attorney Bob Bauer has been at the center of Biden's presidential campaign. Now, days before Tuesday's election, he is focused on the end game: advising an army of lawyers who are monitoring early voting and preparing for the Trump-Biden showdown. They are working to ensure voter access, combating disinformation and voter intimidation, and preparing for attacks on the legitimacy of the vote.
Most new COVID-19 cases in Europe come from a mutated variant of the coronavirus spread from Spain by tourists, scientists said in a report Thursday. The coronavirus variant was first identified in northeastern Spain in June and was carried abroad by tourists and other travelers, the scientists said. There isn't enough data to suggest this variant, known as 20A.EU1, is more deadly, the team from the University of Basel, ETH Zürich in Basel, and SeqCOVID in Spain said.

Pennsylvania officials on Thursday urged local election offices to begin counting mail-in ballots on Election Day, after several Republican-led counties in the battleground state said they would not start tabulating the votes until a day later. The state is bracing for days of uncertainty over the results of next Tuesday's presidential contest between Republican President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, due to a surge in voting by mail amid the coronavirus pandemic. Trump, who trails Biden in opinion polls in the state, said this week that an extended period of counting mail-in ballots would be "totally inappropriate" and an overall winner should be declared on Tuesday night after polls close.
The driver of a Ford Mustang in Dania Beach checked under the hood of the car and found a 10-foot Burmese python. The driver called officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife and Conservation Commission, who removed the reptile. The FWC was not immediately available to answer questions about the incident, but it is likely the officers killed the snake because it is an invasive species that preys on native mammals, birds and other reptiles.
For his part, Graham once relished his battles with the state's most conservative activists, calling the inter-party skirmishes “more fun than any time I've been in politics,” but with polls showing Graham in a statistical dead heat with Harrison, the senator is scrambling to resolve those well-documented problems with voters who have largely moved from the Tea Party to Team MAGA—even though the group's brand of politics couldn't be less in sync with Graham's own.
A pair of popular two-term state governors have put Democrats within striking range of winning control of the U.S. Senate after Tuesday's election, and with better than a bare 50-seat majority. Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Montana Governor Steve Bullock, who both ran for president before jumping into the Senate campaign, could complete a Western sweep of Republican-held Senate seats, along with fellow Democrat Mark Kelly in Arizona. Such an outcome would all but give Democrats the Senate majority, if Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden wins the White House and the party maintains its majority in the House of Representatives.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson got his lost documents back from UPS, the company that lost them in transit, he said on Thursday. The waxwork museum Madame Tussauds in Berlin loaded its effigy of TV star-turned Republican president Donald Trump into a dumpster on Friday, a move apparently intended to reflect its expectations of next Tuesday's presidential election. In what seemed a further calculated insult, the statue of his predecessor and nemesis Barack Obama, who counted Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel among his closest allies, remained in place, beaming and besuited. "Today's activity is rather of a symbolic character ahead of the elections in the United States," said the museum's marketing manager Orkide Yalcindag.

A pioneering nuclear fusion experiment based in Oxfordshire has been switched on for the first time. Mast Upgrade could clear some of the hurdles to delivering clean, limitless energy for the grid. Fusion differs from fission, the technology used by existing nuclear power plants, because it could release vast amounts of energy with little associated radioactivity.

“Many are longtime Republicans wrestling with what they see as a choice between two lousy candidates.”
“Some undecideds turn out to be people who’ve long felt alienated from the two big political parties.”
“They’re not following the 24-hour news cycle. The election and politics are just not a high priority.”
“One common trait: at this stage of the game, the undecided voter doesn’t fit into an easy political profile.”
“More realistically...these voters may not be motivated to vote at all in the 2020 election.”
