“Due to the sophistication of the defendant and the publicity surrounding the case, no other procedure is likely to keep confidential the fact that Assange has been charged,” wrote Assistant U.S. Attorney Kellen S. Dwyer. Joshua Stueve, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of Virginia, said in a statement that the filing was made erroneously. NEW YORK ― Locals are being force-fed a Silicon Valley-sized meal, and all they can hope is that they don’t get poisoned. This week, Amazon announced its plans for a gigantic corporate campus in the Queens neighborhood of Long Island City. In a matter of 15 years, this waterfront community of 20,000 will absorb a gargantuan development with 8 million square feet of office space ― the equivalent of three Empire State Buildings, The New York Times points out ― and tens of thousands of daily workers. Meanwhile, Amazon will receive $1.7 billion in incentives from the state and another $1.3 billion from the city, including a taxpayer-funded helicopter pad, just for moving in.

It’s been a never-ending journey, but God brought us here,” said Carmen Soto, a Honduran migrant traveling with her two young children.
As search crews found another body Wednesday in a house burned by a massive Southern California wildfire, officials fear many more deaths in the destructive blazes at both ends of the state that have now claimed 59 lives. It was a historic night for James as he passed Wilt Chamberlain for fifth on the all-time NBA scoring list midway through last night's game in the fourth quarter with 39 points. Singer Pink‘s husband Carey Hart‘s post — warning looters in Malibu, the location of the Woolsey Fire, that they “will be shot on” sight — has gone viral.

With Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives, Trevor Noah noted on Wednesday’s “Daily Show” that they were ready to investigate President Donald Trump on a slew of matters. “Wow,” Noah said, “Mitch McConnell is brilliant. For that reason, he said, he had a video that Democrats would be required to watch, much like the sexual harassment videos that employers show to their employees.
Prosecutors in New Jersey announced charges against Mark D’Amico, Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt, who they allege made up a story on fundraising site GoFundMe in an effort to keep the money for themselves. Prosecutors say the story that Bobbitt was a homeless man who used his last $20 to pay for McClure’s gas wasn’t true, and was fabricated to earn people’s sympathy so they would contribute to a fundraising campaign whose stated purpose was to help Bobbitt financially.

Bill Nelson and GOP Gov. Rick Scott.
Don’t get me wrong, I like a good pumpkin pie, but every Thanksgiving I try to push the boundaries of this festive gourd. Think about it: gooey, fudgy chocolate swirled with dense cheesecake tinted with earthy pumpkin and warm spices. A combo of bittersweet and semisweet chocolate is used to make a ganache with ― wait for it ― brown butter for rich, nutty notes before getting amped up by instant espresso, cocoa powder and vanilla.
An iconic 1972 painting by British artist David Hockney soared to $90.3 million at Christie's on Thursday, smashing the record for the highest price ever paid at auction for a work by a living artist. With Christie's commission, "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)," surpassed the auction house's pre-sale estimate of about $80 million, following a bidding war between two determined would-be buyers once the work hit $70 million. The previous record for a work by a living artist was held by Jeff Koons' sculpture "Balloon Dog," which sold for $58.4 million in 2013.

The pound plunged against the dollar and euro Thursday after ministers, including Britain's Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, quit in protest against a draft deal to exit the EU. The latest market gyrations came as the nation's business sector gave a lukewarm verdict to the proposed agreement, and amid worries that British Prime Minister Theresa May could soon face a no-confidence vote. "There's been a sharp move lower in the pound ... after Brexit minister Raab announced his resignation," said XTB analyst David Cheetham.
The death toll in Northern California’s Camp fire rose once again on Thursday to 63 as rescue workers continue to search through the devastation left by the state’s deadliest blaze in history, authorities said. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told those gathered at a news briefing that the number of missing persons reflected ongoing work by emergency response personnel sifting through reports, but said many of the unaccounted for may simply be displaced in shelters throughout the region. “The reason that that number went up is because after they went up, [emergency officials] didn’t stop working, they continued to work into the night,” Honea said.

WASHINGTON ― Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) insists she’s still on track to be the next speaker of the House, telling reporters Thursday she has the “overwhelming” support of the Democratic caucus. On top of the 17 opposing her, there are nine moderate Democrats in the so-called Problem Solvers Caucus who say they won’t vote for Pelosi unless she pledges ― in writing ― to back a slate of procedural changes for next Congress by Friday. Hardly anyone on Capitol Hill thinks those nine Democrats are a real hurdle to Pelosi, but it’s becoming clearer by the hour that the Democrats publicly opposed to Pelosi could be ― with an even larger group of freshman Democrats who haven’t said one way or the other whether they will support her.

Florida’s election torment is set to continue after officials ordered a hand recount of ballots in the knife-edge US Senate race between the Republican Rick Scott and the Democrat Bill Nelson. After a troubled machine recount finished on Thursday, Scott had a lead of 12,603 votes, or 0.15 percentage points – within the threshold of 0.25 points that by state law triggers a manual recount.
It’s October, and my eighth-grader is late getting home from school. “Where are you?” I text as I walk out the door to pick up my youngest. I expect him to say the bus is running late or that there’s a sub who doesn’t know the route ― replies I’ve heard
