A former cadet who was expelled from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy after becoming a father filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday challenging the school's policy that prohibits students from being parents. Isaak Olson was two months from graduating from the academy in 2014 with a degree in mechanical engineering and a commission as an officer when he disclosed that his fiancee had given birth to their first child several months earlier, according the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Connecticut. The academy expelled Olson under a regulation that requires cadets to either resign or be “disenrolled” if they incur a “parental obligation” from a pregnancy over 14 weeks, according to the lawsuit.
A woman has died after a Coast Guard rescuer pulled her from a car near the edge of Niagara Falls. A woman was pulled from a car that became submerged only about 100 feet away from the edge of Niagara Falls on Wednesday afternoon, according to local news reports. A Coast Guard rescuer was lowered from a helicopter to grab the unidentified woman from the car, which was submerged near the top of the falls with its trunk open, The Buffalo News reported.
Authorities have identified the victim of a murder-suicide that occurred on Thanksgiving Day. Mayra Uriarte, 36, was shot and killed by the father of her child, Hector Manuel Altamirano Martinez, 37, according to the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office. The suspect then turned the gun on himself.

A white man has been charged with assault and he and his mother are accused of racially profiling after an interaction lead to an altercation with a Black man who was working at a Tennessee parking garage. Johnny Martinez, who identified himself as Black in the video he recorded of the encounter, was checking cars for parking permits in the River House apartment building's parking garage in Nashville for a booting company on the evening of Nov. 27, when he noticed Edward Brennan and his mother, Bitsy Brennan, keeping a closer-than-normal eye on him. Martinez exchanges more words with Bitsy, who notes that “this is a secure building,” and when he asks how she thinks he got in, he turns and Brennan can be seen trying to grab for Martinez's phone as his mother yells for him to stop.
