O'Brien, like millions of Americans across the country, is now dependent on the government to help make ends meet with a second stimulus bill. Earlier this month President Trump called on Congress to pass additional coronavirus relief measures, hours after initially announcing that he was calling off negotiations until after the November election. The House & Senate should IMMEDIATELY Approve 25 Billion Dollars for Airline Payroll Support, & 135 Billion Dollars for Paycheck Protection Program for Small Business,” Trump tweeted on Oct. 6.
But there are concerns that Republicans will try to challenge mail ballots during that counting period in the days after Election Day, delaying the result for weeks. One prominent election lawyer said Tuesday that Republicans in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin appear to want lengthy delays after Election Day in counting votes, given their failure to act and let mail-in ballots be counted before Election Day. A drawn-out counting process would make it more plausible that Republicans who control the legislatures in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan might try to toss aside the results of the popular vote in their state and send a slate of representatives to the Electoral College who are loyal to ...
Hindu groups in the US have expressed outrage at a morphed photo of the Hindu goddess Durga with Kamala Harris's face, after it was shared online by the vice presidential candidate's niece. Human remains were found Tuesday by a team of archaeologists in the search for victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots. One set of human remains and possibly a second were found at the city-owned Oaklawn Cemetery in north Tulsa, where the July excavation previously ended unsuccessfully. "We are still analyzing what has come out of the ground at this point in time, and so no, unfortunately we have not been able to assess the trauma at this point in time, or potential trauma," Oklahoma state archaeologist Kary Stackelbeck said.

Rudy Giuliani's efforts to tarnish Joe Biden's presidential campaign continued in Delaware when he visited a police station Monday to share files from what he said was Hunter Biden's laptop. Jennings' office gave the device to the FBI, which reportedly is investigating the veracity of claims about the origin of the laptop and how its contents were shared with Giuliani's team, Marshall said. "As we've seen in multiple reports, (the FBI) is looking into whether these claims are credible," he said.
After months of fruitless negotiations to develop and pass a new COVID-19 stimulus bill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) reportedly told the White House on Tuesday to give up until after the election. The caucus' 18 Republican and 25 Democratic members declared in a Wednesday statement that "it is critical Congress act immediately to pass bipartisan relief legislation," as "time is running out for the American people." If talks stop until after the election, it could be February until they begin again, the caucus noted.
When word leaked in 2005 that the New York Times was digging into the details of the adoptions of then-Supreme Court nominee John Roberts's two children, the non-partisan National Council for Adoption issued a scathing denunciation of the Times' “abject invasion of privacy [that] shows a shameful disregard for the integrity of the family in general and the adoptive family in particular.” The Times never published a story on Roberts's kids and announced that “any gratuitous reporting about the Roberts's children” would be wrong. “Bill Keller, the executive editor of the paper, told us that he would not stand for any gratuitous reporting about the Roberts's children,” according to a statement at the time from the Times' Office of Public Editor.

In one of his most bizarre and incoherent performances to date, president Donald Trump on Tuesday night told a Pennsylvania rally "nobody wants me" before cutting the event short and dancing off the stage to YMCA. Outmuscled financially and trailing Joe Biden in most national and battleground polls, Mr Trump did not appear to be his usual energetic self, as he addressed thousands of Make America Great Again supporters crammed into a chilly and dark Erie International Airport. Two weeks out from election day the president, 74, complained about the temperature, which had been hovering around 10C (50F) telling the crowd he was only there because he was losing, a highly unusual move – even for a president as unpredictable as Mr Trump.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has reportedly shut down all hope of passing a COVID-19 stimulus bill in the next two weeks. Discussions on the next relief bill have gone on for months with no actual results since the last package — and the boosted unemployment insurance that came with it — expired after July.
This week a Trump supporter went viral for all the wrong reasons after video surfaced of her yelling anti-Black Lives Matter rhetoric at a Starbucks barista in Santee, California. The clip – which was taken by a concerned customer – shows the agitated woman getting into a heated war of words with barista Alex Beckom, 19, after being politely asked her to wear the Trump 2020 mask under her chin, correctly over her face. Instead of leaving quietly, the woman then accused the coffee shop employee of discriminating against her for her political views as a supporter of the president.
A fisherman who reeled in a 110-pound “monster” catfish in Georgia, setting a new state record, is also catching heat for the rare fish's death. The massive fish, hooked last week on the Chattahoochee River, is the largest ever blue catfish caught in Georgia, the state's Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday. Tim Trone, of Havana, Florida, took the prized catch to DNR for an official weigh-in this week, and the record was made official.
Activists say they have planned hundreds of protests to take place in cities across the US on 4 November should president Donald Trump refuse to accept the result of November's election. Earlier in the campaign, Mr Trump repeatedly obfuscated when asked by reporters whether he would hand over the keys to the White House in the event he loses to Joe Biden. Following pressure from a raft of top GOP figures, retired and current generals, Mr Trump appeared to row back on that position at last week's second presidential debate when he said he would commit to a peaceful transfer of power.
The USPS ordered its uniformed police officers to halt their patrol duties at the end of August, raising concerns about the security of mail-in ballots and sparking a lawsuit against the agency. "Why not wait until after the election to neuter the postal police," a union rep for the officers told The Wall Street Journal. The order came a day after Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testified to Congress that he would suspend sweeping changes until after the election following criticism they could delay ballot delivery.
Amy Coney Barrett's nomination to the supreme court has prompted former members of her secretive faith group, the People of Praise, to come forward and share stories about emotional trauma and – in at least one case – sexual abuse they claim to have suffered at the hands of members of the Christian group. In the wake of the allegations, the Guardian has learned that the charismatic Christian organization, which is based in Indiana, has hired the law firm of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan to conduct an “independent investigation” into sexual abuse claims on behalf of People of Praise.

Al Gross commands a fishing boat as a narrator describes him prospecting for gold and killing a grizzly bear in self-defense in an ad meant to underscore a central theme of Gross' U.S. Senate campaign as an independent: that he knows Alaska. Dan Sullivan in a state that has long been a GOP stronghold, outraising Sullivan and putting Republicans on the defensive. Across the country, Republicans are nervous about Senate seats like Sullivan's they once thought safe as Democrats hoping to retake the chamber try to tap into the party's enthusiasm for ousting President Donald Trump.
