A federal judge Wednesday denied bail to an American Airlines mechanic accused of tampering with an aircraft with 150 people on board, saying he had seen evidence suggesting the mechanic had terrorist sympathies. Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born and has family in Iraq, was arrested Sept. 5 after admitting to investigators he had tampered with the aircraft's navigation system before it took off from Miami International Airport. Alani told investigators he had been involved in a contract dispute with the airline, and had disabled the system so he could get more overtime working to fix the problem.
Scores of UFO enthusiasts converged on rural Nevada on Thursday for a pilgrimage of sorts to the U.S. installation known as Area 51, long rumored to house government secrets about alien life, as law enforcement officials beefed up security around the military base. Visitors descended early in the day on the tiny desert town of Rachel, a short distance from the military site, in response to a recent, viral social-media invitation to "storm" Area 51 on Friday, raising concerns by local authorities of unruly crowds overwhelming the community. Situated about 150 miles (240 km) north of Las Vegas, the remote hamlet of just 50 year-round residents lacks a grocery store or even a gasoline station.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) added fuel this week to suggestions that a whistleblower complaint it has been shielding from Congress involved President Donald Trump or senior White House officials. The Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) concluded this month that the complaint was credible and a matter of "urgent concern." Federal law requires the ODNI to forward such complaints to the intelligence committees.

Ban said the technological improvement of DNA analysis allowed authorities to extract DNA samples from evidence that wasn't possible at the time of the cases.
A crewman injured in the fire that killed 34 people aboard the dive boat Conception off Southern California has sued the boat owner and the company that chartered the vessel. Attorney Kurt Arnold says Sims was the steward and was sleeping on the upper deck of the boat when he was awakened by loud noises the morning of Sept. 2 and found the vessel on fire as it was anchored off Santa Cruz Island.
Less than 24 hours after former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski admitted that he has “no obligation to be honest to the media” while being caught lying red-handed, CNN brought on the pugnacious Trump loyalist for an interview that predictably went sideways. Appearing on CNN's New Day on Wednesday morning, Lewandowski and anchor Alisyn Camerota spent a frustrating and headache-inducing 16 minutes going round and round over his contentious and combative testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. For instance, Camerota began the interview by asking Lewandowski about his tactic of stonewalling or just straight-up refusing to answer questions from House Democrats during his testimony, prompting the possible Senate hopeful of doing the same exact thing to her.
