A U.S. Navy reconnaissance aircraft flew near the site of the ruptured Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea hours after the first damage emerged, according to tracking reviewed by Reuters, a flight Washington said was routine. Flight data showed a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance plane was over the North Sea at 0003 GMT when Swedish seismologists registered what they later described as a subsea blast southeast of Bornholm Island in the Baltic Sea.
Jon Reynolds, a Florida Keys charter boat fishing captain, opened up a plastic trash bag Thursday night during a meeting with federal regulators and pulled out a huge ball of thick monofilament line that's used to target en masse mahi mahi, also commonly known as dolphinfish. “To even have this in a fishery anymore in 2022, this is disgraceful — to even do to the ocean,” Reynolds told National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials at the meeting. Reynolds, who also heads a conservation group called South Atlantic Fishing Environmentalists, or SAFE, said an 11-mile-long pelagic longline can have as many as 1,100 large J hooks that snare the bright blue and yellow migratory fish, which are increasingly popular at restaurants, fish markets and grocery stores across the country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree, published on Friday, to set up a new operator for the Sakhalin 1 oil and gas project, following similar steps to seize other oil and gas projects with foreign participation. Exxon Mobil Corp, with a 30% stake, was the operator of Sakhalin-1, a development in Russia's Far East. Earlier this year, Exxon took a $4.6 billion impairment charge for exiting the project, its largest investment in Russia, although its head of upstream operations said on Tuesday it was still working with its partners on its exit.
YouTuber Tyler Hoover found that towing with the electric Ford F-150 isn't as easy as towing with a gas vehicle. One YouTuber learned the hard way that towing a heavy load is more complicated with an electric truck than a gasoline-powered one. In a recent video on his Hoovie's Garage channel, Tyler Hoover put the towing capability of his Ford F-150 Lightning to the test — and he called the experience a "complete and total disaster."

However, even before OPEC+ declared it would be cutting back on oil production, gas prices began inching back up again in September. This may have been due to a combination of increasing demand, refinery issues and the upcoming European ban on Russian oil.
Georgia voters are reacting to the report that Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker paid for an ex's abortion, which he denies. Two weeks after winning the August primary, judicial candidate Jason Kolkema appeared to viciously whip his girlfriend with a belt during an argument in his western Michigan apartment, presumably unaware that nearby witnesses were recording the scene. When he noticed the onlookers from his window, the 51-year-old lawyer flashed them the peace sign, and has since claimed the video isn't what it seems: He was striking a chair with his belt, not his girlfriend, the woman and his lawyer have maintained. In a scandalous judicial election that has stirred much debate in western Michigan, the topic of domestic violence has taken center stage as women's rights activists fight to keep Kolkema off the bench, arguing he isn't fit to be judge, especially in cases involving battered women and vulnerable children.

Today, the closest property in comparison is currently being sold for $1,995,000 but, as Keisha explained in a now-viral TikTok, she's received offers for hundreds of thousands of dollars under value.

The reporter Maggie Haberman describes in her new book Trump's views of the 20-year Afghanistan War. Years before Donald Trump captured the presidency in 2016, he had voiced his strong opposition to the US presence in Afghanistan, railing against the war that began after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and toppled the Taliban-led government, which would emerge victorious in 2021. In August 2012, Trump tweeted that Afghanistan was "a complete waste," adding that it was time for American troops to "come home."

Two friendly world leaders gifted the Russian president a gift certificate for a tractor and piles of melons. Lineworkers' wives have taken to the platform to deride "bucket bunnies" who pursue their husbands. As TikTokers Paige Baden and Emily Hosein flipped through Bumble and Tinder in the wake of Hurricane Ian, they noticed an influx of "blue collar boys" — the denim- and hard-hat-clad linemen dispatched to fix downed power lines. "Just want any wives or girlfriends to be aware that their lineman husbands or boyfriends, now that they're out of town helping us in Florida — this is what my Bumble account looks like," Baden, who says she's in central Florida, told viewers in an October 1 video, before cutting to a slideshow of screenshots of men with the profession "lineman" listed.
New York City deployed a new tactic Friday morning in an effort to counter Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's increasing flow of migrant buses: drowning the bus companies and their drivers in traffic violations. Two more buses arrived at the city's Port Authority Bus Terminal just after 6 a.m. Friday, adding to the more than 17,000 migrants Abbott has bused to New York in a sick political stunt. This time, however, a half-dozen uniformed members of the NYPD Highway Patrol's Motor Carrier Safety Unit were waiting.
As borrowers wait for the application for student debt forgiveness — due out any day now — the Education Department (ED) has offered some recent updates on loan eligibility, income requirements, and assistance for borrowers in default. Income requirements will be based on adjusted gross income from your 2020 or 2021 federal tax return, and borrowers in default can use the Fresh Start Program to get them back in good standing to be eligible.
Donald Trump is seeking to withhold from the justice department two folders marked as containing correspondence with the National Archives and signing sheets that the FBI seized from his Mar-a-Lago resort, according to court filings in the special master review of the confiscated documents. The former US president's privilege assertions over the folders, which appear to have direct relevance to the criminal investigation into whether he retained national defense information and obstructed justice, are significant as they represent an effort to exclude the items from the inquiry and keep them confidential. Most notably, Trump asserted privilege over the contents of one red folder marked as containing “NARA letters and other copies” and a second, manilla folder marked as containing “NARA letters one top sheet + 3 signing sheets”, a review of the court filings indicated.
Nearly nine out of ten people age 65 and older currently receive Social Security benefits, and the past year has been tough for many of those seniors. Not only did the 5.9% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) enacted last year fail to cover to the rising cost of Medicare premiums, it also failed to keep up with inflation in general. In fact, The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) estimates that the average Social Security benefit fell short by $417 year-to-date through August.
PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Wednesday called on the international community to help the Caribbean nation, as a gang blockade of a key fuel terminal has created widespread shortages of goods including drinking water. Gangs have since last month been blocking the entrance to the Varreux fuel terminal, creating dire shortages of diesel and gasoline and crippling day-to-day activities in Haiti. Authorities over the weekend confirmed an outbreak of cholera, which is typically propagated by contaminated water.
He's the psychiatry researcher behind a major new study showing that there's no solid link between low serotonin levels and depression. Based on his research, Horowitz believes SSRIs like Lexapro aren't really doing what he was once led to believe: correcting a "chemical imbalance" in his brain. In fact, he says it's high time that this conventional wisdom is properly debunked for the general public once and for all, instead of being relegated to watercooler chatter among academics, doctors, and drugmakers.
Racing down a road with his men in pursuit of retreating Russian soldiers, a battalion commander came across an abandoned Russian armored vehicle, its engine still running. “They dropped everything: personal care, helmets,” said the commander, who uses the code name Swat. After months of static fighting and holding the line under withering Russian artillery barrages, Ukrainian soldiers are exulting over their smashing of Russian lines in the northeast three weeks ago, and their recapturing of swaths of territory seized by Russian troops earlier this year.
DUBAI (Reuters) -Iran's clerical rulers will likely contain the country's eruption of unrest for now, and prospects of the imminent dawn of a new political order are slim if history is any guide, four analysts said. The protests, which began over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini her arrest by morality police, have spiralled into a revolt against what protesters said was the increasing authoritarianism of its ruling Islamic clerics. However, the chances of this snowballing into the kind of uprising that rapidly unseated veteran Egyptian and Tunisian rulers in 2011 seem remote any time soon, since Iran's rulers are determined to maintain their grip on power at any cost.
In the intercept, which the ministry posted on the Telegram messenger on Oct. 7, one of the invaders can be heard complaining to his wife about the “unbearable situation” in Ukraine and being under constant fire. Ukraine has launched phone hotlines and websites through which newly mobilized and regular Russian soldiers can obtain instructions on how to surrender safely to Ukrainian forces. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin early on Sept. 21 declared a partial mobilization in Russia and his readiness to use nuclear weapons in the event of a “threat to the territorial integrity” of Russia.
Bridget Namiotka, a former national and international medal-winning pairs figure skater who was the first person to publicly accuse the late two-time U.S. national pairs champion John Coughlin of sexual abuse, died July 25, her parents confirmed to USA TODAY Sports Friday. “Bridget succumbed to her long struggles with addiction after several very difficult years of dealing with the trauma of sexual abuse,” her parents Steve and Maureen Namiotka said in an interview. On May 19, 2019, Namiotka announced in a Facebook post that she was sexually abused for two years by Coughlin, her pairs partner, when she was a teenager.
The Colorado baker who won a partial Supreme Court victory after refusing on religious grounds to make a gay couple's wedding cake a decade ago is challenging a separate ruling he violated the state's anti-discrimination law by refusing to make a cake celebrating a gender transition. A lawyer for Jack Phillips on Wednesday urged Colorado's appeals court — largely on procedural grounds — to overturn last year's ruling in a lawsuit brought by a transgender woman. The woman, Autumn Scardina, called Phillips' suburban Denver cake shop in 2017 requesting a birthday cake that had blue frosting on the outside and was pink inside to celebrate her gender transition.
“They give voters the chance to hear candidate views. In their own words. In real time.”
“There is campaigning, and there is governing. Two different things. … In the end, it is governing that really matters.”
“We are in a crisis of democracy, and we need to be able to figure out how to disagree.”
“In very close races, small mistakes can prove decisive, or at least knock a campaign in the wrong direction for a few days.”
“The debates themselves are shaping up to be major campaign issues. It’s tedious, and it does not serve the voters.”
