It took more than five hours of confrontational exchanges, but Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee finally managed to regain the narrative in their questioning of Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump's former campaign manager who in 2017 was enlisted by the president to curb the investigation into Russian electoral interference by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III. The hearing began on Tuesday afternoon with Lewandowski deftly rebuffing Democratic attempts to find out more about the meeting he had with Trump in the Oval Office on June 19, 2017. During that meeting, Trump wanted Lewandowski to prevail on then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who had recused himself from the Russia investigation, to somehow bring the investigation to a close.
DETROIT – Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday that Deangelo Martin will face charges in the murders of four women on Detroit's east side. Martin, 34, of Detroit, already faces four counts of criminal sexual conduct and one count of assault with intent to murder in a separate case. The killings sparked fears in June throughout metro Detroit and a door-to-door dragnet for other victims who might have been left in abandoned homes and a killer who police said targeted women in their 50s.
To make the case for the link between terrorism and global warming, Sanders linked to a news story with a provocative headline: “Climate change will increase risk of violent conflict, researchers warn”. Dear Democrats: If you want to slow climate change, carbon pricing is a necessity. But that paper hardly offers compelling evidence that terrorism is bigger today thanks to global warming.
My daughter Meadow was murdered in the Parkland school shooting in Florida last year. It was the most avoidable mass murder in American history. And last week, Governor Gavin Newsom just forced into every school in California the policies that made it inevitable.
A surfer enjoying the pristine waters off Australia's east coast Sunday didn't see the large shark beneath the surface, but a nearby drone operator did. UPSOUND: SHARK, SHARK, SHARK... Using a search and rescue drone equipped with infra-red thermal imaging and a warning speaker system, amateur drone pilot Christopher Joye captured the moment the shark approached.
Abdelhamid Al-Madioum, a 22-year-old naturalized US citizen jailed in northern Syria, told CBS News that he was recruited to join ISIS on Twitter when he was just 18 years old. Al-Madioum disappeared while on a family vacation in Morocco in 2015, according to court documents detailed by the Minneapolis Star Tribune in 2017. Unbeknownst to his parents, he had secretly booked a flight to Istanbul.
With two new aircraft carriers slated to begin deploying in two years' time, the U.K. fleet must figure out how to deploy, as a cohesive force, large numbers of warships comprising a carrier strike group. Contrast this with the fleet's current deployment model, which for the most part sends out single warships on solo patrols, each at their own pace. If the reorganization succeeds, the Royal Navy will evolve from a thinly but widely spread force to one that deploys to fewer places at a time, but does so in greater concentration.
The veteran Israeli politician Avigdor Lieberman took the political gamble of his life when he spurned his mentor, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and forced an unprecedented repeat election. With neither Netanyahu's Likud nor former military chief Benny Gantz's centrist Blue and White party forecast to secure a majority in the 120-seat parliament without his support, Lieberman has emerged as the election's true winner — the one most likely to dictate the makeup of the next government. Lieberman passed up the post of defense minister in Netanyahu's government following April's election and refused to join the new coalition because of what he said was the excessive influence it granted to ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties.
Russian border guards have detained two North Korean boats in Russian territorial waters in the Sea of Japan after one of them attacked a Russian patrol, local media cited the Federal Security Service (FSB) as saying on Tuesday. A Russian border patrol discovered two North Korean schooners and 11 motorboats fishing illegally off its far eastern coast and detained the first vessel, prompting the second one to open fire, the FSB was quoted as saying. Three Russian border guards were wounded in the incident.
CHICAGO – Trial began Tuesday in the murder case of a 9-year-old boy who was shot and killed nearly four years ago in one of Chicago's most horrific crimes. Two purported gang members are charged with carrying out the November 2015 attack on Tyshawn Lee, a fourth-grader who prosecutors say was killed in an alley near a kid's playground to send a message to his father, an alleged member of a rival gang. The killing shocked the nation at the time and underscored the viciousness of warring factions in Chicago.
Some teenagers in Canada and the United States are pledging not to have children until their governments take serious steps to combat climate change. Emma Lim, an 18-year-old student at McGill University in Montreal, recently launched a climate-change movement called "#NoFutureNoChildren," in which people can pledge to hold off having children until the government takes action. "I have always, always wanted to be a mom, for as long as I can remember," Lim told Insider.
The Taliban's chief negotiator has said their "doors are open" to resuming talks with Washington, hours after two attacks by the insurgents killed at least 48 people in war-weary Afghanistan. Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai also defended the Taliban's role in recent bloodshed across the country after US President Donald Trump cited an attack that killed an American soldier as his reason for calling off negotiations earlier this month. Speaking to the BBC, Stanikzai argued the Americans had also admitted to killing thousands of Taliban during the discussions, and that the insurgents had done nothing wrong by continuing to fight throughout the talks.
Hours after the world learned that journalist Cokie Roberts had passed away following complications from breast cancer, right-wing provocateur Michelle Malkin took a swipe at the reporter's legacy by calling her “one of the first guilty culprits of fake news. Taking part in a panel at the Paley Center on Tuesday, Malkin joined an array of liberal and conservative commentators and media figures to discuss whether the media is biased. At one point in the discussion, Malkin—who has recently been making the media rounds hawking her latest anti-immigrant book—took aim at Roberts.
The Belgian Air Force is policing Baltic airspace as of September 3; on Tuesday, it intercepted two Russian Tu-160 Blackjack supersonic, nuclear-capable bombers. Belgium took over the Baltic policing mission from Hungary which, along with Spain and the UK, was policing Baltic airspace when Russian Su-30 Flanker fighters flew near Baltic airspace twice over two days in June. US and UK aircraft have been sending clear messages to Russia — US B-2 Spirit stealth bombers flew their first missions in the Arctic earlier in September, and the B-2s flew with non-US F-35s for the first time in August.
Key point: Iran has encountered really strange flying objects that might be an unknown, secret American spy plane. Iran is the only other country besides the United States to operate arguably history's most powerful interceptor aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat. The F-14s played a major role in Iran's war with Iraq from 1980 to 1988.
Andrew Yang says he isn't going to stop making Asian jokes. In fact, the entrepreneur-presidential candidate added another one in an interview Wednesday with POLITICO. Asked whether the Democratic National Committee's debate-qualifying thresholds had altered his campaign's strategic approach, Yang initially stopped himself.
NEW DELHI (AP) Cash-starved Air India is putting its crew on a diet, changing their inflight menu to special low-fat meals. Dhananjay Kumar, the state-run airline's spokesman, said Wednesday that the objective is to provide healthy and cost-effective meals to crews on domestic and international flights. Kumar declined comment on media reports that the cost per meal, mostly vegetarian, will fall to one-third of the current 500-800 rupees (up to $11) per meal.
A couple have decided to keep their baby's sex a secret from close relatives in a bid to avoid gender bias. Hobbit Humphrey, 38, and Jake England-Johns, 35, refer to their 17-month-old child, Anoush, with the pronoun, "they", and dress them in both girls' and boys' clothing. The married couple, who are members of the climate action group, Extinction Rebellion, have been accused of “virtue signalling”.

A North Carolina high school cheerleading team is on probation after taking a picture in front of a Trump 2020 re-election banner.
LOS ANGELES — When President Trump touched down in California Tuesday, local Democrats seemed to greet his arrival largely as a platform for protest, with at least a hundred demonstrators lining the road near his first event as enormous Baby Trump and Trump Chicken balloons hovered overhead. But the real reason Democrats should be paying attention to Trump's current California swing isn't because it's a prime opportunity to register their displeasure with policies on immigration, emissions and forest management. Instead, Democrats' cause for concern should be the mountains of money Trump is raising here — and, more importantly, the right-wing energy that money represents.
When Houston immigration activist Roland Gramajo Reyes invited U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to a public meeting for people worried about being arrested due to their immigration status, he didn't think he'd end up behind bars. Gramajo's longtime advocacy on behalf of Houston's immigrant and Latino communities, family, attorney, and allies said, make them seriously doubt that the timing of his apprehension was an accident. Now, Gramajo, 40, is caught in a tug-of-war between law enforcement agencies seeking to either deport him after 25 cumulative years in the United States, or to first incarcerate him for improper entry into the United States, a charge that could land him in prison.
China's technological strategy and innovation are serious threats to US national security — now, according to retired Adm. William McRaven, the US has reached a 'holy s---" moment and needs to invest more significantly in technology research and development to keep its edge. In some cases — like with 5G commercialization — China is already beating the US, and its intellectual-property theft of US technology only compounds the rapid pace at which it's developing new technologies, a report by the Council on Foreign Relations released Wednesday said. The legendary former Navy SEAL Adm. William McRaven said at an event on Wednesday that China's technical and defense capabilities were quickly approaching — and sometimes surpassing — those of the US, representing what he called a "holy s---" moment for the US.
Key Point: The North Vietnamese government even commemorated the event by portraying the operation on a 1964 postage stamp. It was shortly after midnight when two Viet Cong commandos emerged from a sewer tunnel that emptied into Saigon Port, each man carrying nearly 90 pounds of high explosives and the components needed to make two time bombs. An escort carrier that saw distinguished service as a submarine-hunter in the North Atlantic during World War II, during the early morning hours of May 2, 1964, Card was part of U.S. Military Sealift Command.
