China's government issued a warning to "foreign forces" after Taiwan reported a record 28 Chinese military planes flew over the self-governed island's airspace Tuesday, per Reuters. Why it matters: The warning and deployment of aircraft including fighter jets and bombers comes after G7 leaders issued a statement Sunday urging the Chinese government to respect human rights and calling on peace and "stability across the Taiwan Strait." What they're saying: "We will never tolerate attempts to seek independence or wanton intervention in the Taiwan issue by foreign forces, so we need to make a strong response to these acts of collusion," said Chinese government spokesperson Ma Xiaoguang, accordin...
The takeout drinks and outdoor construction was enabled by Wolf's pandemic emergency declaration, which the state GOP has nonsensically attacked as some kind of death blow to freedom. They therefore added a constitutional amendment to the recent primary election ballot that would give the legislature the power to overturn a governor's emergency declaration. Unfortunately (in part because it was a low-turnout primary) this amendment passed, and the Pennsylvania legislature has duly canceled Wolf's emergency declaration.
During a press conference Wednesday following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Biden snapped at a reporter for asking how he could be confident the Russian leader would “change his behavior” given his denial of human rights abuses against Russian dissident Alexei Navalny and others, his refusal to admit even partial responsibility for the Russian cyber attack on a major U.S. oil pipeline, and his tepid commitment to improving U.S.-Russia relations generally. Collins responded by pointing out that Putin refused to give ground during his own press conference on the issues that Biden said they would be discussing during their meeting, and argued that Putin's history suggests he won't be changing his behavior anytime soon. “If you don't understand that, you're in the wrong business,” Biden shot back.

One method Manchin hinted at during the call was lucrative post-office bribes. "Regarding [Sen. Roy] Blunt, Manchin appears to be suggesting — without, perhaps, quite explicitly saying so — that the wealthy executives on the call could dangle future financial opportunities in front of the outgoing senator while lobbying him to change his vote," write The Intercept's Lee Fang and Ryan Grim. The Senate rules could be changed at any time by Democrats, and as the swing vote Manchin could extract just about any goodies for himself or his state he could imagine.

Since 2005, the amount of heat trapped by the Earth has roughly doubled, according to a new study by NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researchers. "The magnitude of the increase is unprecedented," NASA scientist and lead author of the study Norman Loeb told The Washington Post. "The Earth is warming faster than expected."

Chan was one of 18 scientists who published a letter in the journal Science last month calling for a more in-depth investigation into the virus's origin that takes into account theories about both natural occurrence and laboratory spillovers. The letter helped kick-start a new round of calls to investigate the "lab leak hypothesis," including demands from President Joe Biden and several leading scientists. And while public discussion of a potential lab leak has shifted significantly in recent months, as more people pay attention to a theory that was originally promulgated by former President Donald Trump and his followers, the scientific evidence has remained unchanged, according to intervie...

Health professionals say the real figure could be many times higher because there is no proper reporting mechanism, and many deaths occur in villages.
