The result of the New York City mayoral primary will not be known for another week or two, but as expected, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is currently in the lead. Given the city's strong Democratic tilt, Adams will be the overwhelming favorite to win the general election later this year, should he emerge victorious from the primary. For Tuesday's primaries, the city adopted ranked-choice voting for the first time in its history, a reform that is gaining support around the country among those who want to encourage moderation and bipartisanship in politics.
The Rev. William Barber of North Carolina was arrested Wednesday with more than 20 others for obstructing traffic in front of the Hart Senate Building during a protest in Washington. Barber and supporters of his National Poor People's Campaign, who protest state and national policies they say are racist or disproportionately affect poor people and those of color, were in Washington for a “Moral March on Manchin and McConnell.” The event was part of a year-long effort planned by the Poor People's Campaign.
Former President Donald Trump's one-time chief strategist Stephen Bannon believes the GOP has a chance to pick up 50 House seats in the 2022 mid-terms if they focus heavily on bashing critical race theory during campaigns, he told Politico. Bannon's confidence seems to stem in part from his belief that the backlash against the academic theory, which Politico notes "examines how race and racism permeates society," being taught in schools isn't growing only among, say, QAnon conspiracy theorists.
Puberty blockers have “unknown” and “life-changing consequences” for trans children, and could impact their fertility, the Court of Appeal has heard. An NHS Trust, which runs the UK's only gender identity development service for children, began its appeal to challenge a landmark legal ruling over the use of puberty-blocking drugs for children on Wednesday. The legal challenge has been launched after the High Court ruled in December that children under 16 with gender dysphoria can only consent to the use of hormone-blocking treatments if they are able to understand the "immediate and long-term consequences" of the drugs.
The Supreme Court upheld an individual's right to private property against government intrusion in two very different California cases Wednesday, underscoring the libertarian leanings of the more conservative majority. In one case, the justices sided with a California motorist who complained when a police officer followed him without a warrant into his home garage, where he was questioned and ticketed for drunk driving. In the second, the court voided a long-standing California labor rule that gave union organizers limited access to private farmland to talk to workers.

The prospect of COVID-19 booster shots have been looming since even before any vaccines were granted approval late last year. Most scientists believe boosters will be necessary at some point, though it's not clear when, but they also may want to make sure those bonus shots aren't needed all that often in the long run, Katherine Wu reported for The Atlantic on Wednesday. "Boosting in perpetuity isn't an ideal option, if we can avoid it," Wu wrote.
It accused the hospital and the provincial health authorities of trying to cover up medical negligence. "These allegations are false, unsubstantiated and only serve to tarnish the good reputation of Steve Biko Academic Hospital and the Gauteng Provincial Government," the latest statement said. Legal action would be taken against the editor-in-chief of Pretoria News, Piet Rampedi, and IOL, it said.
Miami is proud of its beaches — but the Internet says Florida's other beaches are better. Holidu.com, a search and booking website for vacation rentals, analyzed more than 30,000 Google searches to come up with the 10 most popular Florida beaches. And despite seasonal car twerking, the heady aroma of weed and a promise not to enforce a ban on alcohol sales after 2 a.m.
President Biden will move immediately to replace the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Mark Calabria, an appointee of former President Trump with broad powers over mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Supreme Court opened the door for Calabria's removal with a Wednesday ruling that made clear the president had the authority to oust the regulator. A White House official responded by saying Biden would start the process of inserting an FHFA director who supports the administration's priorities on housing policy.
Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away, an alien race may have been watching and listening to humans on Earth, a new study has claimed. The findings state there are 29 planets which are “potentially habitable”, and therefore may harbour life, and that are close enough to our planet to have received human radio waves. The results do not prove aliens are spying on humans, or indeed that aliens exist at all, but researchers sought to find out if it was possible we were being watched by beings on another planet.

It was not a secret that Margarette “Ann” Cuauhtli wanted to leave home when she turned 17. For years, the Arlington teen had been confiding to friends and even some family members about her troubled home life and alleged abuse at the hands of her adoptive father, Gabriel Cuauhtli, in southeast Arlington. So when she disappeared on Oct. 11, 2001 — two weeks before her 17th birthday — and was reported the next day as a runaway to Arlington police by her father, red flags did not immediately go up.

Although Paul Murdaugh's cell phone was found near his body on the night of the killings June 7, investigators were unable to locate Maggie Murdaugh's cell phone that night, the sources said. It wasn't until the next day, Tuesday, June 8, that a family member using his cell phone's ability to “ping” Maggie Murdaugh's cell phone found the phone on his digital cell phone map, sources said.
But their outrageous behavior in connection with the Jan. 6 assault on our nation's Capitol by supporters of former President Trump cut straight through my filters and forced me to confront their words. With Harris, it was his refusal to vote in favor of awarding medals to police officers who defended the Capitol because the proposed legislation used the word “insurrection” to describe the attack. With Carlson, it was his unsupported allegation that members of the FBI were involved in organizing the attack.

“The pandemic has unequivocally proven the public health value of masks. And they should stick around in certain situations.”
“With the steady thrum of anti-mask sentiment in the U.S., it’s highly unlikely that they will continue to be a ubiquitous sight.”
“Wearing masks on airplanes or other modes of transit ... can help keep everyone safe.”
“Just because masks are common in many other nations ... is hardly a reason to emulate the practice.”
“The fact that the flu all but vanished ... is not evidence alone that masks were responsible.”
