Brazil top prosecutor to investigate Bolsonaro over COVID-19 vaccine deal

BRASILIA (Reuters) -Brazil's top prosecutor agreed on Friday to request an investigation of President Jair Bolsonaro for dereliction of duty in the process of procuring an Indian COVID-19 vaccine, according to a copy of the request seen by Reuters. The president has been caught up in allegations of irregularities surrounding the 1.6 billion reais ($316 million) contract signed in February for 20 million doses with a Brazilian intermediary for the vaccine's maker, Bharat Biotech. Federal prosecutors and the comptroller general's office, or CGU, are also investigating the alleged irregularities in a deal that has caused public outrage in Brazil, home to the world's second highest number of COVID-19 deaths.

President Joe Biden honored the 2020 World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House Friday during a quip-filled ceremony heading into the holiday weekend after a somber trip to Surfside, Florida. During his opening remarks, Biden congratulated the team for its historic run but joked that he doesn't think he "can handle [Los Angeles Mayor Eric] Garcetti if you win twice," prompting laughs from the team and crowd in the East Room. Biden also asked if second gentleman Doug Emhoff, a die-hard Dodgers fan, was in attendance.

Almost twice as many EU citizens as thought have been living in UK

Nearly twice as many EU citizens have been living in the UK as previously thought, with the number of applications for settled status having passed six million. A near record monthly total of 400,000 EU citizens applied for settled status in June to beat Wednesday night's deadline, taking the total applicants for the scheme to 6.02 million, the Home Office disclosed on Friday. That compares with previous Home Office estimates of 3.5 to 4.1 million EU citizens who were expected to apply, and Office for National Statistics (ONS) passenger survey data which estimated that around 3.5 million EU citizens were living in the UK in the middle of last year.

Russia says parties to Iran nuclear talks need more time before new meeting

Some parties to the Iran nuclear talks need more time before resuming negotiations in Vienna and a new round is unlikely before next week, Russia's envoy said on Thursday. Iran and the United States have been holding indirect talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers that imposed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting international sanctions. "The #ViennaTalks on #JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) will resume as soon as all the participating states are ready for what is supposed to be the final stage of negotiations," Mikhail Ulyanov, Moscow's ambassador to the U.N. atomic watchdog, said on Twitter.

Forget-me-not: London palace's garden redesigned for Diana statue

A favourite spot of the late Princess Diana, the Sunken Garden at her former London home Kensington Palace has been redesigned to house a statue in her honour to be unveiled on Thursday by her sons, Princes William and Harry. "This has been a very special project to work on, as the Sunken Garden was a favourite place of Diana, Princess of Wales," Pip Morrison, who designed the new layout, said in a statement. "We have worked carefully to ensure that the new layout and planting scheme compliments the statue, providing a calming place for people who visit Kensington Palace to remember the princess."

Miami building collapse: Still possible to find survivors, Biden says

US President Joe Biden has said it is still possible to find survivors in the rubble of a building that collapsed last week near Miami in Florida. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said officials were planning for the possible demolition of the remaining structure, and a decision would need to be made "extremely carefully and methodically," given how it would affect the search-and-rescue mission. Earlier this week, in an interview with news outlet WPLG, a rescue worker recalled hearing a woman's voice underneath the debris - and his team's desperate attempt to get her out.

Supreme Court sides with Amish who argued septic systems violate their religious beliefs

WASHINGTON โ€“ The Supreme Court on Friday sided with an Amish community that is challenging on religious grounds a Minnesota county's requirement that its members install septic systems to treat wastewater. The high court overturned a state court ruling that had sided with the county and asked the state's courts to review the case again in light of its recent ruling in favor of a Catholic foster care agency in Philadelphia that refused to screen same-sex couples. Fillmore County in 2013 began requiring that the Swartzentruber Amish, who reject modern technology as part of their religion, install septic systems to treat the wastewater from laundry, bathing and cooking โ€“ known as gray water.

Mere blocks north of the Surfside disaster site, the beachfront property is providing a safe space as a place to rest weary souls waiting for news, any news, bad, good or unthinkable. A huge red Verizon popup booth set up outside, one worker on the site explained, offers Surfside families a chance to make free international phone calls to loved ones oversees, cool off or charge electronic devices.

Biden condemns Supreme Courtโ€™s โ€˜severe damageโ€™ to voting rights as Democrats demand action

Following a decision from the US Supreme Court that could have a ripple effect on voting rights as Republican lawmakers implement sweeping elections laws that make it harder to vote, President Joe Biden condemned the high court's โ€œsevere damageโ€ to the Voting Rights Act. โ€œIn a span of just eight years, the court has now done severe damage to two of the most important provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 โ€“ a law that took years of struggle and strife to secure,โ€ he said in a statement on 1 July. In 2013, the court stripped out a provision prohibiting states with histories of discrimination at the polls from changing their elections laws without federal oversight.
