The claim: Kamala Harris called California a 'model of what the country should be' In 2018, the New York Times called attacks on the state of California a "red-meat rallying cry for national Republicans." Now, some are reprising that criticism against Democratic vice-presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris, who hails from the Golden State. A user posted a quote to Facebook that purported to be from Harris that read, "California is a model of what the country should be."
Hurricane Epsilon's maximum sustained winds dropped slightly as it moved northwest over the Atlantic Ocean on a path that should sideswipe Bermuda on Thursday. Epsilon's maximum sustained winds decreased late Thursday morning to 90 mph (150 kph), dropping it from a Category 2 storm to a Category 1 as it swirled near enough for the National Hurricane Center to issue a tropical storm warning for the island. The Miami-based center said Epsilon was located about 235 miles (375 kilometers) east-southeast of Bermuda and moving to the northwest at 7 mph (11 kph).
That excuse was preposterous at the time, making it sound like Trump was a child who had his hand in the cookie jar, not a 73-year-old man caught abusing his powers of office to blackmail the Ukrainian president into propping up conspiracy theories about Joe Biden. But it was also hilariously predictable that Trump, who is incapable of learning or growing as a person, would absorb any moral lessons from being impeached. Trump didn't learn anything.
U.S. Army officials announced Tuesday that Vanessa Guillén, the 20-year-old Fort Hood soldier who went missing in April, died "in the line of duty." "The Army conducts a line of duty determination for all Soldier deaths," Fort Hood officials said in a statement. The line-of-duty determination means that Guillén's family will receive Army benefits, such as compensation for expenses, the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance, allowances and a funeral with full military honors.
Senator Lindsey Graham skipped a debate and insisted he would not return to his home state of South Carolina until Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed by the senate, as polls showed him facing an increasingly tough re-election bid. The senator did not attend the debate previously scheduled for Wednesday against his Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison, stating at a rally earlier in the week that he was “headed back to Washington” and adding: “I'm not coming back until Amy Coney Barrett is a Supreme Court Justice.” Recent polls have shown Mr Harrison, associate chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a former chair of the state's Democratic Party, rising in his bid to unseat the Republican incumbent.
This year's election is looking familiar. Polls have long given Democratic nominee Joe Biden a big advantage in this year's presidential race. And with more forecasting Democratic gains in the Senate as well, pollsters and analysts have started to compare 2020 to 1980.
Mabel Cook is older than the right to vote, and in advance of her 101st birthday on Oct. 28, she exercised that right. The only reason she did not vote for the other four — Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge or Herbert Hoover — was because she was just too young. Now, at her advanced age, Cook is living up to her maiden name — Duty — by doing her civic duty and voting.
A 26-year-old North Carolina coronavirus survivor returned home Tuesday after being declared brain dead in June. She had suffered complications including strokes, which have struck other young coronavirus patients for reasons doctors don't fully understand. Doctors also don't know why some critically ill young patients who were previously healthy die while others bounce back.
Joe Biden broke his silence on Hunter Biden's laptop to dispute claims his son enriched himself using the family name as "garbage" from Donald Trump's henchman, Rudy Giuliani, in a desperate, last-ditch smear campaign. It comes as the Delaware Department of Justice confirmed to The Independent that it has referred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation the latest claims from Mr Giuliani that possible evidence of child endangerment was found on the laptop. When asked if there was any legitimacy to a Homeland Security report alleging his son profited off the former vice president's name, Mr Biden said there was "none whatsoever" and that the “vast majority of intelligence people” said there wa...
The U.N. envoy for Libya said Wednesday the two warring factions have agreed on issues that “directly impact the lives and welfare of the Libyan people,” noting that the thorny work to cement a cease-fire in the restive North African country will continue. Stephanie Turco Williams, the U.N. envoy, cited agreements to open air and land routes in the country, to work to ease inflammatory rhetoric in Libyan media, and to help kickstart Libya's vital oil industry, as talks in Geneva continued this week under her mediation. “I am pleased to report that the two sides have reached agreement on several important issues which directly impact the lives and welfare of the Libyan people,” she said.

Ghislaine Maxwell strongly denied introducing Prince Andrew to underage partners, repeatedly calling the Duke of York's accuser a "liar" and "fantasist". In comments made under oath in 2016, released for the first time after a long legal battle, Maxwell claimed she did not remember taking Virginia Giuffre, aged 17 at the time, out for a night of clubbing with Andrew in London. Maxwell, the British socialite, claimed she did not remember the first time she and Ms Giuffre met, and said that the American "lied repeatedly" about her interactions with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was supposed to speak at a left-wing peace advocacy group's online memorial for the late Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, on the the 25th anniversary of his assassination. After backlash from progressives, AOC bailed on the event, which was held the same night she played a video game for a huge online audience. Rabin did terrible things in war, as war makes people do, but he later gave his life in pursuit of peace with the Palestinians when he was killed by an Israeli ultra-right-winger.

Health experts recommend wearing masks in public and keeping your distance from others in most cases, but whether you should do both could depend on the situation. “There's no invisible force field at 6 feet,” said Saskia Popescu, an infectious disease expert at George Mason University. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says spread of the virus beyond 6 feet is uncommon but more likely in poorly ventilated spaces.
It's 2016 all over again: Donald Trump and his allies are touting a set of purloined documents to accuse his Democratic opponent of corruption, and the specter of foreign interference hangs over the waning days of the race. Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, has said he obtained the materials from the laptop of Hunter Biden, the Democratic nominee's son. There are concerns, too, about the former New York mayor's interactions with figures linked by Trump's own administration to Russian intelligence.
The Coca-Cola Company is cutting its portfolio in half, kicking at least 200 beverage brands to the curb by end of year. The money-saving move will allow Coke to focus on its most profitable products so that it may “emerge stronger from the pandemic,” the company said in a news release Thursday. The news comes nearly a week after the beverage giant announced it would discontinue its once popular sugar-free soft drink Tab after more than 60 years on shelves across the world.

The dinosaur, Yi qi, only barely managed to glide, stretching out and shimmying its skin-flap, downy-feathered wings in a valiant attempt at flying. “It was rocketing from tree to tree, desperately trying not to slam into something,” said Alex Dececchi, a paleontologist at Mount Marty University in South Dakota. Unsurprisingly, Yi qi is not an ancestor of modern birds.
The Supreme Court's deadlock this week in a key election case illustrates the power President Donald Trump's nominee Amy Coney Barrett could wield and reveals why Republicans are hurrying to install her as a justice, Democrats said on Wednesday in their latest pitch to block her U.S. Senate confirmation. Chief Justice John Roberts broke with the four other conservative justices and joined with the court's three liberals on Monday in denying a request by Republicans seeking to block a state court's ruling that extended the deadline for the delivery of mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania by three days.
