An international relations expert is warning that the attacks on Ukraine by Russian forces will lead to dire consequences unless the leaders of other nations change how they deal with Russia - and that includes Canada. Russia is in the midst of invading Ukraine from land, sea and air, zeroing in on cities and military targets. Aurel Braun is a professor of international relations and political science at the University of Toronto, as well as an associate at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies Harvard University.

U.S. troops in Latvia tells Putin 'don't mess with us,' minister says

The presence of U.S. and other NATO troops in Latvia sends a message to Vladimir Putin that Russia should stay away, Latvian Defence Minister Artis Pabriks said on Friday as he greeted a small deployment of U.S. soldiers. The group of some forty U.S. service members arrived from Italy early on Thursday - before hostilities in Ukraine began. Russia invaded Ukraine by land sea and air on Thursday after massing more than 150,000 troops around the country's borders including in Latvia's neighbour Belarus.

Putin’s war in Ukraine ‘should concern every person on Earth’: Why political observers say the Russian invasion may foretell an era of global disorder

Could the war in Ukraine mark the beginning of a new era defined by global unrest and power grabs? In the days leading up to Russia's invasion of its neighboring country, commentators and officials were framing a potential war as one with much larger implications — not just for Eastern Europe or all of Europe, but for all the world. At heart is the concern that following a post-World War II period in which countries, especially superpowers, rarely imposed their will on others through military means, the Ukrainian war could signal a different — and decidedly more dangerous — approach.

Turkey says it cannot stop returning Russian warships from accessing Black Sea

Turkey cannot stop Russian warships accessing the Black Sea via its straits, as Ukraine has requested, due to a clause in an international pact that allows vessels to return to their home base, the Turkish foreign minister said on Friday. Ukraine has appealed to Turkey to block Russian warships from passing through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits which lead to the Black Sea, after Moscow on Thursday launched a full-blown assault on Ukraine from land, air and sea. Russian forces landed at Ukraine's Black and Azov Sea ports as part of the invasion.

China blames U.S. for war in Ukraine, even as it appears increasingly uncomfortable with standing by Russia

China appeared to be less than thrilled with the aggressive military actions taken in Ukraine on Thursday by President Xi Jinping's self-described "best friend," Vladimir Putin. At a briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying expressed that "China did not wish to see what happened in Ukraine today," and deflected allegations that Beijing was providing backing for the attack, The Washington Post reports. "As for American hints that Russia had China backing it up, I'm sure Russia would be pleased to hear it," Hua said.

Serbia will not impose sanctions against Moscow, president says

Serbia respects Ukraine's territorial integrity and considers Russia's military action against it to be "wrong," but will not impose sanctions against Moscow, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Friday. Serbia, led by Vucic, is performing a delicate balancing act between its European aspirations, partnership with NATO and its centuries-old religious, ethnic and political alliance with Russia. But as tensions between Russia and the European Union over Ukraine are rising, Serbia is under pressure to harmonise its foreign policy with that of the EU, which it aims to join, and introduce sanctions against Moscow, among other things.
