NEW YORK ― Locals are being force-fed a Silicon Valley-sized meal, and all they can hope is that they don’t get poisoned. This week, Amazon announced its plans for a gigantic corporate campus in the Queens neighborhood of Long Island City. In a matter of 15 years, this waterfront community of 20,000 will absorb a gargantuan development with 8 million square feet of office space ― the equivalent of three Empire State Buildings, The New York Times points out ― and tens of thousands of daily workers. Meanwhile, Amazon will receive $1.7 billion in incentives from the state and another $1.3 billion from the city, including a taxpayer-funded helicopter pad, just for moving in.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is seen on the balcony of the Embassy of Ecuador in London in 2017. “Between you and me, I’ve been working a lot with the internals of WikiLeaks,” wrote Monsegur, who commonly went by the nickname “Sabu” — and who became infamous for becoming an FBI informant. “Before lulzsec broke apart, they came to us to hack the entire government of iceland,” he continued, sending a message over encrypted chat service Jabber to fellow hacker Jeremy Hammond, who was later convicted in 2013 for hacking private intelligence firm Stratfor.
As search crews found another body Wednesday in a house burned by a massive Southern California wildfire, officials fear many more deaths in the destructive blazes at both ends of the state that have now claimed 59 lives. It was a historic night for James as he passed Wilt Chamberlain for fifth on the all-time NBA scoring list midway through last night's game in the fourth quarter with 39 points. Singer Pink‘s husband Carey Hart‘s post — warning looters in Malibu, the location of the Woolsey Fire, that they “will be shot on” sight — has gone viral.

With Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives, Trevor Noah noted on Wednesday’s “Daily Show” that they were ready to investigate President Donald Trump on a slew of matters. “Wow,” Noah said, “Mitch McConnell is brilliant. Prosecutors in New Jersey announced charges against Mark D’Amico, Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt, who they allege made up a story on fundraising site GoFundMe in an effort to keep the money for themselves. Prosecutors say the story that Bobbitt was a homeless man who used his last $20 to pay for McClure’s gas wasn’t true, and was fabricated to earn people’s sympathy so they would contribute to a fundraising campaign whose stated purpose was to help Bobbitt financially.
WASHINGTON ― Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) insists she’s still on track to be the next speaker of the House, telling reporters Thursday she has the “overwhelming” support of the Democratic caucus. On top of the 17 opposing her, there are nine moderate Democrats in the so-called Problem Solvers Caucus who say they won’t vote for Pelosi unless she pledges ― in writing ― to back a slate of procedural changes for next Congress by Friday. Staffers from the offices of two prominent Democrats have reached out to HuffPost in the last two days to say members have been urging their bosses to run for speaker.

China has been pouring money into the Pacific Island nation, injecting at least $5.9 billion of infrastructure spending since 2011 into an economy smaller than any U.S. state. The investment has highlighted the region’s growing status as a strategic battleground between China and U.S. allies ahead of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summits, which are bringing Xi, Vice President Mike Pence and other world leaders there this week. A banner advertising the state-owned China Railway Group flew over a construction site near cruise ships being used to house delegations.
The pound plunged against the dollar and euro Thursday after ministers, including Britain's Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, quit in protest against a draft deal to exit the EU. The latest market gyrations came as the nation's business sector gave a lukewarm verdict to the proposed agreement, and amid worries that British Prime Minister Theresa May could soon face a no-confidence vote. "There's been a sharp move lower in the pound ... after Brexit minister Raab announced his resignation," said XTB analyst David Cheetham.
Under state law, the Florida Department of State must trigger a manual recount if an electronic recount of ballots finds a margin of victory of less than 0.25 percent. Elections officials were expected to inspect by hand any ballots that were designated undervotes or overvotes, cases where the machine that reviewed the ballot concluded that a voter had skipped a contest or marked more than one selection. The order came after U.S. District Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee, Florida, cleared the way to include ballots from as many as 5,000 people across the state who submitted ballots by mail that were rejected by election officials.
Don’t get me wrong, I like a good pumpkin pie, but every Thanksgiving I try to push the boundaries of this festive gourd. Think about it: gooey, fudgy chocolate swirled with dense cheesecake tinted with earthy pumpkin and warm spices. A combo of bittersweet and semisweet chocolate is used to make a ganache with ― wait for it ― brown butter for rich, nutty notes before getting amped up by instant espresso, cocoa powder and vanilla.
