Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason pushed back on President Trump's election fraud claims, prompting an angry outburst.'You're just a lightweight' »
A common defense of President Trump's refusal to concede the 2020 election is that he's simply taking revenge on his liberal opponents, in particular those who doubted the legitimacy of the 2016 election because of Russian interference. The media gave Russia Collusion 3.5 years. We can give Team Trump three and a half weeks,” tweeted Jenna Ellis, a member of the Trump campaign's legal team that has failed to provide any evidence in court of cheating in the 2020 election.
Thanksgiving, typically celebrated with big family dinners, became the latest major event in American life to be altered or diminished by the coronavirus in 2020 as most U.S. states struggle with spiraling infections and deaths. "All of a sudden I feel kind of lonely, I have to admit," said Janis Segal, 72, as she prepared to join family members in a Zoom call for Thanksgiving. The U.S. Supreme Court late on Wednesday struck down as unconstitutional an order by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo imposing severe restrictions on the number of people who could worship at churches and synagogues in the state.
Indonesia's anti-corruption commission formally named the country's fisheries minister as a suspect in taking bribes related to exports of lobster larvae, and alleged he used the money on a luxury shopping spree during a visit to the United States. Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Edhy Prabowo was arrested upon arrival at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport early Wednesday from a working visit to the U.S., the deputy chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission, Nurul Ghufron, told Kompas TV. Prabowo apologized, saying, “I will be responsible for what I have done.”
In a surprise news conference on Thanksgiving Day, President Trump took questions from the press for the first time since losing re-election—but he doubled down on his “rigged” election claims and appeared to deny the reality that his presidency is ending, saying it will be “very hard” for him to concede to Joe Biden. “I think it's not right he's trying to pick a Cabinet,” Trump complained after railing against the supposed “massive fraud” that he claims gave Biden victory. Reiterating his claims of voter fraud in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Georgia despite the fact that state authorities have already certified the election results in those states, Trump appeared to become combative when asked if he would concede if the Electoral College votes for Biden on Dec. 14.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthi forces in Yemen carried out a series of air raids on barracks used by the Iran-aligned group in and around the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Friday, according to local residents. The reported air strikes came after a Houthi missile attack on Saudi oil facilities in the Red Sea city of Jeddah on Monday, and damage inflicted to a tanker by an explosion at a Saudi Red Sea terminal on Wednesday. The coalition said on Friday it had pinpointed and destroyed two mines in the south of the Red Sea, Saudi state TV reported, accusing the Houthis of laying the explosives.
When Avetisyan and his partners attempted to exercise an option on 9.9 percent of Vostochny Bank's shares in 2018, Baring Vostok refused, because of evidence that assets worth billions of rubles had been withdrawn from Uniastrum Bank before the merger. Baring Vostok then filed claims of fraud against Avetisyan for 17.5 billion rubles (around $276 million) in the London International Arbitration Court. In apparent retaliation for the London lawsuit, Avetisyan's partner Sherzod Yusupov went to the FSB in February 2019 with a claim that Calvey and five associates from Baring Vostok had defrauded Vostochny Bank of 2.5 billion rubles ($38 million at the time).
Turkish prosecutors launched an investigation Friday into the search of a Turkish commercial freighter by the crew of a German frigate participating in a European Union mission to enforce an arms embargo on Libya. Turkey has protested the incident on the Mediterranean Sea, insisting personnel from the German frigate Hamburg illegally searched the Libya-bound freighter Rosaline-A on Nov. 22.. Germany has rejected Turkey's complaints, arguing the frigate's crew acted correctly.
President Donald Trump on Thursday called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger an "enemy of the people." The Trump campaign has targeted Raffensperger — a Republican who is the state's top election official — after Georgia voted for a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time in nearly 30 years. The outgoing president continues to claim, without evidence, that widespread voter fraud in key states like Georgia helped Joe Biden win the election.
The Iraqi military is training a former member of an Iran-backed militia, who is under U.S. sanctions for killing protesters, to become a high-ranking officer in the army, according to six government, security and militia officials. A defence ministry document seen by Reuters showed his name, with the rank Major General, on a list of officers attending the training until next summer. Making Lami a senior officer in the army is one of the boldest moves yet by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, a U.S. ally, to dilute the power of Iran-backed militias in Iraq, the officials said, and aligns with Washington's stated desire to curtail Tehran's influence across the Middle East.
The world has learned a lot about Yevgeny Prigozhin since American authorities first filed criminal charges against him two years ago for alleged financial ties to the internet troll farm accused of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Known as “Putin's Chef” due to his vast Kremlin catering contracts, Prigozhin has also been sanctioned by the U.S. for his alleged ties to Russian mercenaries affiliated with the Wagner Group. Now, leaked data from several sanctioned Russian firms linked to Prigozhin's business networks reveals that key Prigozhin associates have helped one of his political consultants infiltrate a high-level United Nations panel. The U.S. Treasury links it directly into President Vladimir Putin's chain of command describing the shadow military as “a designated Russian Ministry of Defense proxy force.”
But when Mickle decided to hang a flag of his own last month — proclaiming that “Black Lives Matter" — his neighborhood association immediately asked him to take it down, calling the flag ”noxious or offensive" under its rules. If his neighbors could express their support for police, he said, he should be allowed to make a statement of his own. My life means something.
Many have also travelled home to celebrate the holiday, despite warnings from health officials. More than three million people are reported to have travelled through US airports from Friday to Sunday in what was the busiest travel weekend since the outbreak began in mid-March. But the number is around half the usual figure for Thanksgiving travel, and many people have opted out of seeing friends and family for the holiday.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, handily won a second term this month, but underperformed President-elect Joe Biden by more than perhaps any other Democratic candidate in the country. There are a slew of factors that likely impacted Omar's race, including a third party on the ticket, a supremely well-funded Republican opponent, and the fact that she was virtually guaranteed to win reelection.
Confrontations between demonstrators and followers of a firebrand cleric left two protesters dead in southern Iraq on Friday, officials said, as thousands also took to Baghdad's streets in a show of support for the preacher ahead of elections next year. Two protesters were killed and 10 were wounded in the southern city of Nasiriya, two medical officials said, after clashes broke out between anti-government protesters and supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
Authorities in Mexico have arrested a key suspect in the killing of nine members of a Mormon community. Three women and six children, all dual US-Mexican citizens, were driving through the Sonoran desert when they were killed in an ambush last year. Roberto N is believed to have been the "intellectual architect" of the attack, Mexico's federal attorney-general's office said on Wednesday.
Germany will probably have to stick with measures to dampen the coronavirus pandemic into January, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday, while her chief of staff suggested that restrictions might be needed until March. "Given the high number of infections, we assume that the restrictions which are in place before Christmas will continue to be valid until the start of January, certainly for most parts of Germany," Merkel told parliament. Merkel agreed with leaders of Germany's 16 federal states late on Wednesday to extend and tighten the coronavirus lockdown until Dec. 20, but ease rules over the Christmas holidays to let families and friends celebrate together.
Dominion Voting Systems, a provider of election infrastructure, responded on Thursday to the pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell's accusations that it took part in vote rigging. In a point-by-point rejoinder, Dominion said Powell was "alleging a bizarre election fraud conspiracy" that would be impossible to carry out. Powell was until recently part of President Donald Trump's legal team.
Rebels in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed two soldiers in an attack Thursday in the disputed region's main city, the Indian army said. Col. Rajesh Kalia, an Indian army spokesman, said militants sprayed bullets at an army patrol on the outskirts of Srinagar city. Two soldiers were critically injured and later died at a hospital, he said.
For example, how do these allegations of good old fashioned voter fraud (dead people voting, “chain of custody” issues, observers not being allowed to see the counting) square with the last time I saw Giuliani, when he (along with Sidney Powell) alleged that voting software created by Hugo Chavez switched votes from Trump to Biden? I mean, if votes can be magically manipulated by machines to cancel or switch votes, then why go to the trouble of having dead people vote? I'm also haunted by Trump's constant premonitions that the election was going to be stolen.
The U.S. government's road safety agency is investigating complaints that suspensions can fail on nearly 115,000 Tesla electric vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has 43 complaints that linkages near the ball joints can fail, allowing contact between the tire and wheel liner. In addition, NHTSA says it has eight complaints that may involve suspension failures that haven't been confirmed by photos or service records.
The US State Department has approved the sale of advanced weaponry systems to Taiwan, in a deal worth some $1.8bn that includes sensors, missiles and artillery, the Pentagon said. The deal also includes 135 precision-guided cruise missiles, as well as mobile light rocket launchers and air reconnaissance pods that can be attached to fighter jets.

A venture capitalist who gave $2.5 million to a pro-Trump group that said it was trying to find evidence of election fraud is now looking for a refund. A lawsuit said Fred Eshelman gave vast sums to the Texas-based True the Vote Inc. but was soon disappointed with its efforts. Eshelman said he pressed True the Vote for details of how it was spending his money but instead got "platitudes, and empty promises."
Georgia Democratic Senate candidate, Raphael Warnock, has shared an election video of him throwing away dog poop in response to 'smear ads' from political opponent Kelly Loeffler. The Reverend posted the 30-second video on Twitter with the caption: "I told you the smear ads were coming, but Georgians will see Sen. @Kloeffler's ads for what they are." According to Georgia law, the winner of any state election must receive 50% of the votes otherwise, a runoff is required, which will occur on January 5, 2021, between Warnock and Loeffler.
“Donald Trump defeated Donald Trump.”
“The victory was a vindication of a style of American politics that many feared was gone forever.”
“Mr. Biden’s victory — and Mr. Trump’s defeat — is a testament to the resilience of American democracy.”
“Trump’s 2020 reelection bid was doomed by his boorish behavior. Time and again, he refused to act like a president.”
“Biden took the opportunity to unite the Democratic Party.”
