Children under the age of 12 are much less likely than teenagers to contract the coronavirus, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published on Monday. The new study also found that Hispanic children were hit hardest by the coronavirus, composing 42 percent of all cases for which ethnic data was available. The new study does, however, appear to bolster the arguments of those who say that children should return to school instead of continuing with what has been, according to many accounts, a disastrous national experiment in distance learning.
During presidential elections, believers are expected to line up and vote based on carefully selected values that make for great campaign ads. As a Catholic, I am well aware that as a member of the largest single religious institution in the United States, I am part of a voting bloc coveted by every candidate. As a Catholic, the issue central to my evaluation of every candidate is a matter of life and death — abortion.
One of Colombia's most wanted paramilitary leaders was flown back to his home country on Monday after spending 12 years in U.S. prisons for drug trafficking. Rodrigo Tovar, also known as Jorge 40, arrived on a deportation flight and was escorted by police to a room where officers took his fingerprints. “He is being held by immigration officials and the police” National Peace Comissioner Miguel Ceballos wrote on Twitter.

After weeks and months of President Donald Trump characterizing former Vice President Joe Biden as an senile old man who can't string two sentences together, his campaign has finally realized that they should start raising expectations for his performance at the first debate this Tuesday night. Apparently, Donald Trump Jr. didn't get the memo. The president's eldest son kicked off his Fox & Friends appearance by attacking CNN's Jake Tapper for not pressing Jill Biden harder on her husband's history of making “gaffes” during an interview on State of the Union Sunday.
Thousands of fire-sapped California residents fled two new blazes Monday that exploded in size overnight, torching more than 25,000 acres. A PowerPoint at the heart of the case The PowerPoint was used by Ms Meng at a meeting with the bank HSBC on 22 August 2013, and is seen as key evidence against her. Reuters news reports in the preceding months had raised questions about whether there had been a breach of trade sanctions on Iran by Hong Kong-based firm Skycom. CHINA HOLDS NEW DRILLS AMID UPTICK IN TENSIONS China is holding new military exercises in the South China Sea amid an uptick in tensions between the Asian giant and its Southeast Asian neighbors and the U.S. The Maritime Safety Administration issued a pair of announcements blocking off seas around the area of the exercises running Sunday through Monday but gave no additional details. China holds regular drills in the area and there was no immediate indication they had been prompted by recent events. However, they follow a series of sorties earlier this month by Chinese warplanes into Taiwan's airspace at the northern end of the South China Sea.
I tried to find out who the seller was behind one particular mask, but it turns out they can make themselves pretty anonymous. When I clicked on the Amazon seller profile, there was a list of other similar items and not a lot of additional information. There was no way to know if the profits from this purchase would be used to fund an organization dedicated to helping Black people — which is the kind of purchase I wanted to make — or just to make someone a few dollars richer.
Washington has made preparations to withdraw diplomats from Iraq after warning Baghdad it could shut its embassy, two Iraqi officials and two Western diplomats said, a step Iraqis fear could turn their country into a battle zone. Any move by the United States to reduce its diplomatic presence in a country where it has up to 5,000 troops would be widely seen in the region as an escalation of its confrontation with Iran, which Washington blames for missile and bomb attacks. That in turn would open the possibility of military action, with just weeks to go before an election in which President Donald Trump has campaigned on a hard line towards Tehran and its proxies.
For three weeks in August, as election officials across the country were preparing to send out mail-in ballots to tens of millions of voters, the U.S. Postal Service stopped fully updating a national change of address system that most states use to keep their voter rolls current, according to multiple officials who use the system. A USPS spokesperson acknowledged the failure in response to questions from TIME, and said that at least 1.8 million new changes of address had not been registered in the database. In normal times, hundreds of thousands of people move every week, and those numbers have increased during the COVID pandemic, which has forced millions of people, particularly young adults, to relocate at higher rates than usual, according to public polling and news reports.

Willow told her mom that she was "proud" of her for speaking up publicly.

Pakistan's anti-graft body arrested an opposition leader Monday over his alleged involvement in a money laundering case after a court rejected bail for him, a move coming just before planned protests next month by his party seeking to force Prime Minister Imran Khan's resignation. The Pakistan Muslim League party criticized his arrest as being politically motivated.

He is slated to meet with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the foreign minister for the Vatican.
A vessel carrying some 100,000 barrels of gasoline that a shipping company suspected was destined for fuel-starved Venezuela arrived at a U.S. port on Monday, Refinitiv Eikon data showed, after a U.S. court approved a private sale of the cargo. In a lawsuit filed in May, Marshall Islands-based Brujo Finance Company said it feared Sea Energy Company, the charterer of its Alkimos tanker, planned to send the gasoline-laden vessel to Venezuela - which is subject to strict U.S. sanctions - and not Aruba or Curacao as Sea Energy initially stated. Sea Energy said in court filings it did not plan to send the cargo to Venezuela.
During his first two segments as a guest on The View Monday morning, the Republican senator from Texas denigrated The New York Times' bombshell report on President Donald Trump's tax returns as both fake news and irrelevant to most voters and dismissed charges of hypocrisy over the current Supreme Court fight by calling 2016 and 2020 “very different circumstances.” “Yes, we should reopen, and I actually think if you look at Florida and if you look at Texas,” Cruz said, “the death rates have been much, much lower there than for example, states like New York, New Jersey, states with Democratic governors where the death rates have been enormously through the roof.”
Sweden also has a lower proportion of multigenerational households than most other European countries, and one of the smallest average household sizes in Europe: about 2.2 people per home. Sweden drew attention and condemnation for its decision to keep primary schools, restaurants, bars, and gyms open throughout the pandemic. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is taking extraordinary steps to prepare for the 2020 election, seeking to increase Democrats' hold on state congressional delegations in the highly unusual scenario that the House is called on to resolve a disputed presidential contest. “We cannot leave anything to chance,” Pelosi said in a letter to colleagues, emphasizing the importance of winning House seats for Democrats — not just to expand their majority but to prepare for the possibility that the House must settle the presidential race. “It's sad we have to have to plan this way, but it's what we must do to ensure the election is not stolen,” Pelosi said Sunday in the letter.

“Enfranchising 16-year-olds would be good for them and good for our democracy.”
“At 16, most kids have little awareness of politics, civics, or American history.”
“Voting is habit forming...which underscores the importance of having as stable an environment as possible for the youngest voters.”
“Keeping the voting age at 18 is not a slap at 16-year-olds. It is recognition that an informed electorate is the best kind.”
“When young people’s participation lags badly, issues important to them receive short shrift in the public discourse.”
