The research, published in the July 13 edition of Lancet Oncology, found that over 4% of all new cancer cases in 2020 were caused by alcohol consumption.

New York Gov. Cuomo urges businesses to adopt 'vaccine-only admission'; Delta yields more reinfections, Fauci says: Latest COVID-19 news

Pressure continues to increase from Democratic elected officials to get people vaccinated against the coronavirus as infections mount across the country, fueled by the spread of the highly transmissible delta variant. Days after President Joe Biden said federal workers and contractors would have to get vaccinated or face restrictions that include masking and testing, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday workers in New York City's airports and public transit system will be required to get the shots or weekly tests. At a Manhattan news conference Monday, Cuomo also urged private enterprises to require vaccination of their employees and customers.

100-year-old accused of once being a Nazi guard to stand trial in Germany

Prosecutors in Germany said on Monday that a 100-year-old man accused of being a Nazi concentration camp guard is fit to stand trial in October. The man, whose name has not been released, allegedly served as a guard at the Sachsenhausen camp near Berlin, with prosecutors accusing him of being complicit in the murders of 3,518 prisoners between 1942 and 1945. There aren't many former guards who are still living, but now there is legal precedent that prosecutors do not need evidence of direct involvement in murders at concentration camps to bring someone to trial.

Meerkats, according to Zoo Miami spokesman Ron Magill, are constantly digging tunnels and says the recent rain likely caused the ground to cave on top of him.

Biden to landlords: Don't evict President Joe Biden challenged all landlords Monday to hold off on evictions for the next 30 days and asked his administration to consider the possibility of unilaterally extending a moratorium even in the face of legal concerns. The president called on all states and cities to extend or put in place policies to freeze evictions for at least two months. The White House had said only Congress could extend the freeze, but Biden faced pressure to act after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leaders urged the White House on Sunday to extend it anyway.

Delta variant drives COVID surge, prompting new mandates

Healthcare workers in Missouri are bearing the brunt as hospitalizations among people with COVID-19 have nearly doubled in a month. The hardest hit area includes Springfield, where there's been a dramatic rise of COVID-19 patients in one hospital system since mask mandates were lifted before two big holiday weekends. As bad as the situation is in Missouri, it's worse in several other states, including Florida, where more than 10,000 are hospitalized.

‘I’m back’: Ex-con Blagojevich sues for right to run again

Ex-con and former Gov. Rod Blagojevich sued his home state Monday for booting him from the governor's seat after his 2008 arrest for corruption and stripping him of his right to run for elective office in Illinois. Before filing the lawsuit, an unapologetic Blagojevich addressed reporters outside the same federal courthouse in Chicago where he was convicted, declaring: “I'm back.” Then-President Donald Trump freed Blagojevich in February 2020 after he had served eight years of a 14-year sentence, including for trying to sell an appointment to Barak Obama's old U.S. Senate seat for campaign cash.

Virginia has reported 1,000 Covid cases for the second day in a row, following three months without a day over 1,000 reported cases.

Why Is the FBI Ignoring Far-Right Violence Taking Place in the Open?

Amid the silent sniffles and eye-dabbing last week as four policemen recounted how they struggled to hold off the howling pro-Trump mobs on Jan. 6, an significant anecdote told by one of the officers drew no attention from the presiding committee members or in the following days' news accounts. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn recalled how at 10:56 on the morning of Jan. 6, he got a text message from “a friend” who had acquired or overheard a detailed plan by one of the militant groups for a coordinated, military-style assault with guns on the Capitol. Seeing that message caused me concern,” Dunn said—an understatement considering what soon followed.
