House Democrats, and 2 Republicans, vote to create select panel to probe Jan. 6 Capitol attack

The House of Representatives voted 222-190 Wednesday to create a select committee to investigate the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol carried out by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. Wednesday's vote fell largely along party lines, with just two House Republicans joining all 220 Democrats in supporting the resolution. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced the measure after Republicans in the Senate blocked the creation of an independent commission to investigate the riot.

Ex-mayor in Busan, S. Korea, jailed 3 years for sex abuse

The former mayor of South Korea's second-largest city was jailed Tuesday on a three-year sentence for sexually abusing two city employees during his tenure. Busan's district court also ordered Oh to receive counseling and banned him from jobs at child welfare organizations and disability facilities for five years following the end of his jail term. Oh, who was seen as a key ally of Busan-raised President Moon Jae-in, stepped down as the city's mayor in April 2020 after admitting he had โ€œunnecessary physical contactโ€ with a female public servant who accused him of groping her in his office.

Hot mic: Biden suggests Maxine Waters run for Senate and encourages Nancy Pelosi to 'keep it up'

President Joe Biden encouraged California Rep. Maxine Waters to run for Senate during a bill signing event at the White House, which produced a series of hot microphone moments for the president. Biden signed three bills during the Wednesday ceremony also attended by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, another favorite target of the Right. After brief remarks describing the soon-to-be laws, Biden welcomed Pelosi to the stage after the pair publicly clashed over how to pass the $1.2 trillion bipartisan "hard" infrastructure deal and a possible $6 trillion "soft" infrastructure reconciliation framework.

Sweltering heat wave linked to sudden deaths in Vancouver

A sweltering heat wave that has settled over western Canada for several days is believed to be a contributing factor in dozens of sudden-death calls received by police in the Vancouver area, authorities said Tuesday. Mike Kalanj of Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the detachment responded to 25 sudden-death calls in a 24-hour period starting Monday. Temperatures in the Vancouver area reached just under 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) Monday, but the humidity made it feel close to 104 degrees (40 Celsius) in areas that aren't near water, Environment Canada said.

Japanese official warns US of potential surprise attack on Hawaii โ€” from Russia and China

Russia and China are coordinating military exercises to threaten not only Taiwan but also Hawaii, according to a senior Japanese defense official who warned the United States to beware of a Pearl Harbor-style surprise attack. โ€œWe have to show the deterrence towards China, and not just China but also the Russians, because, as I told you, that they are doing their exercises together,โ€ Japanese deputy Yasuhide Nakayama told the Hudson Institute this week. Taiwan's vulnerability to an invasion from mainland China has become a preoccupation of Indo-Pacific strategists in recent months, as Chinese Communist forces escalate their military drills around the island.

Reports: Grand jury indicts Trump Organization, top executive

A grand jury in Manhattan has indicted the Trump Organization and its longtime chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, the Washington Post reported Wednesday. Why it matters: The indictment, which is expected to be unsealed Thursday, is the first in Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance's nearly three-year investigation into former President Trump's finances. Prosecutors have mounted an aggressive effort to pressure the 73-year-old Weisselberg โ€” who has intimate knowledge of the Trump Organization's finances โ€” to cooperate in the investigation.

The area has been fought over by rival cartels for more than a decade, usually by the Gulf cartel and the old Zetas cartel, and later a remnant of that group, the Northeast Cartel. While some of the corpses had military-style clothing, there was no immediate confirmation on which gang they may have belonged to. Most had bullet wounds, but some also appear to have been hacked into or shot so many times their organs spilled onto the roadway, authorities said..

Sausage wars: We turned rules โ€˜upside downโ€™ to make Northern Ireland Protocol work, EU claims

Brussels has turned its rules and regulations โ€œupside downโ€ to make the Northern Ireland Protocol work, the EU's ambassador to the UK said on Wednesday after a three-month truce was agreed in the Brexit sausage war. Joรฃo Vale de Almeida said the extension to the grace period for chilled meats and a string of concessions to smooth protocol barriers for medicines, guide dogs, livestock and car insurance proved that the EU was not โ€œinflexibleโ€ or โ€œlegalisticโ€. Writing for The Telegraph, he warned that the EU would insist upon the full implementation of the protocol, which keeps Northern Ireland subject to almost 300 EU rules and creates an Irish Sea border for goods from Britain.

Tropical Storm Elsa could form soon. Watches issued for eastern Caribbean islands

The Lesser Antilles are under tropical storm watches as a disturbance with a high probability of strengthening into the fifth named storm of the season, Elsa, heads their way. It's far too soon to tell if the disturbance poses a threat to Florida, but authorities are already working to split resources away from the search-and-rescue effort at the Surfside condo collapse to prepare for a future storm. The National Hurricane Center began issuing advisories for potential tropical cyclone five Wednesday evening.

What could happen to Donald Trump's company if it's indicted?

But an indictment by a grand jury, legal experts said, would cloud Trump's financial future, and could potentially cripple his company. Under New York state law, a corporation convicted of the financial charges being mulled in the Trump Organization case would face at most a $10,000-per-count penalty and an order to pay restitution. New York state prosecutors do not have the power, unlike those in some other states, to ask a judge to dissolve a company.

HSBC documents revealed in Huawei extradition battle

Internal documents from HSBC bank have been released as part of a lengthy extradition battle over the Chief Financial Officer for Chinese telecoms giant Huawei. Lawyers for Meng Wanzhou are fighting to prevent her extradition from Canada to the US for alleged sanctions breach. The case is particularly sensitive as Huawei has become a lightning-rod for US-China tensions and competition over technology, and besides serving as CFO, Ms Meng is also the daughter of its founder, a former Chinese army engineer.

The only thing tragic about the death of Donald Rumsfeld is that it didn't occur in an Iraqi prison. An actuarial table of the deaths for which Donald Rumsfeld is responsible is difficult to assemble. According to Neda C. Crawford, Brown's political-science department chair, the Afghanistan war to that point claimed about 147,000 lives, to include 38,480 civilians; 58,596 Afghan soldiers and police (about as many American troops as died in Vietnam); and 2,401 U.S. servicemembers.

Donald Rumsfeldโ€™s policies have consequences that still reverberate

Donald Rumsfeld was one of the key figures in shaping the geopolitics of our time โ€” playing a prominent role in taking the US into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and pursuing policies that created bitter divisions at home and abroad. The defence secretary under two US presidents, he was heavily influenced by neo-con ideologues in the George W Bush administration and helped to lay out a blueprint for America's approach to defence and foreign affairs whose consequences reverberate to this day. Rumsfeld, who died on Wednesday at the age of 88, was a veteran politician, a counsellor to Richard Nixon in the 1960s, a senior member of Gerald Ford's administration and Middle-East envoy under Ronald Reagan.
