A divided Supreme Court rejected a Pennsylvania Republican effort to curtail mail-in voting, but experts say the Democratic victory may be short-lived — and confirming Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett would be a "disaster for Democrats." With Chief Justice John Roberts joining the court's three liberals, the court split 4-4 to reject a request from Pennsylvania Republicans to block an order from the state's Supreme Court allowing mail-in ballots to be counted if they are received within three days of Election Day — even if they do not have a clear postmark. The tie left the state decision in place, which Democratic lawyers hailed as "great news for voting rights."
A father and son in a pickup truck waving a Trump campaign flag were shot at after honking at a Joe Biden supporter installing a Black Lives Matter sign, police allege. Douglas Kuhn, 50, is being held without bail for allegedly firing a shotgun at Neal Houk and son Bradly Lang in Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The judge hearing the case before Baltimore County District Court on Monday was furious that the current political climate had come to this.
Tropical Storm Epsilon strengthened Monday morning in the central Atlantic, the latest in what has been a very active hurricane season. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph), up slightly from when it formed hours earlier. Additional strengthening was expected and Epsilon was forecast to be at or near hurricane strength by early Thursday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., drew swift backlash on Friday night after he deliberately mispronounced Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris' first name at a rally, adding several syllables as he drew laughs from the crowd. The senator's re-election campaign said the Republican senator had "simply mispronounced Senator Harris' name, and he didn't mean anything by it." "Perdue has served with Kamala Harris in the Senate for four years," Washington Post White House Bureau Chief Phil Rucker tweeted.
A fisherman who reeled in a 110-pound “monster” catfish in Georgia, setting a new state record, is also catching heat for the rare fish's death. The massive fish, hooked last week on the Chattahoochee River, is the largest ever blue catfish caught in Georgia, the state's Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday. Tim Trone, of Havana, Florida, took the prized catch to DNR for an official weigh-in this week, and the record was made official.
More than 50 former intelligence officials wrote a public letter Monday saying they were "deeply suspicious" that Russia could be involved with the dubious New York Post stories published recently about Joe Biden's son Hunter. In the letter, first reported by Politico, the former officials said they believed the information at the center of the stories had "all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation." "It is high time that Russia stops interfering in our democracy," the officials wrote.
Danish submarine killer Peter Madsen took a female psychologist hostage and then escaped from prison in Copenhagen on Tuesday, keeping police at bay for nearby two hours after he wore what police feared was an explosives belt strapped around his abdomen. "There is nothing at this point to indicate that (the belt) contained explosives... We think it was fake," Copenhagen Vestegns police inspector Mogens Lauridsen said, adding that an investigation was underway to be certain.
"My final prediction is that Donald Trump will become the first sitting president since George H.W. Bush in 1992 to lose reelection," Lichtman said. While Trump's chances still looked promising at the end of 2019, according to his model, the plunging of the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic and nationwide racial justice protests in 2020 may seal his fate. "Never before in the history of the United States has the party holding the White House suffered such a sudden and dramatic reversal of fortune in just a matter of a few months," Lichtman said.

The Republican Party has cut into Democrats' advantage in voter registration tallies across some critical presidential battleground states, a fact they point to as evidence of steady — and overlooked — enthusiasm for President Donald Trump and his party. Even though Trump trails in national polls and struggles with fundraising with just weeks before Election Day, Republicans see their progress signing up voters in Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona and other states as a rare bright spot. Democrats appear to have been set back by their decision to curb in-person voter registration drives during much of the pandemic.

"I chose to flee from Hong Kong because I knew I wouldn't be given a fair trial," the protester, who did not want to be identified, told Reuters by phone from an undisclosed location in Germany.

"I want this as soon as possible because I don't want to carry over the droppings of this grotesque elephant into the next presidency," Pelosi said on the call, Politico reports.

The key is now hanging on for the next four or five months, where we're going to enter what may be the worst period during this epidemic.
Israel discovered a new cross-border tunnel from the Gaza Strip on Tuesday that its military said extended "dozens of metres underground" and into southern Israel. The military said its engineers discovered the tunnel using underground sensors attached to a concrete barrier that, once completed, will run 65 kilometres (40 miles) around Gaza. Soon after the announcement, a rocket was fired from Hamas-ruled Gaza toward Israel and intercepted by its Iron Dome anti-missile system, the military said.
Four months before his arrest for sexual exploitation of children, cheerleader Jerry Harris ditched his cellphone after a friend told him he might be under investigation, federal prosecutors say. Authorities have not named the person who warned Harris, saying only that it was someone who owns a gym. An amended lawsuit filed Monday claims the unnamed friend is Angela Rogers, co-owner of Cheer Athletics, a prominent cheerleading company whose Wildcats team competed this year on NBC's "America's Got Talent."

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg's $100 million investment in Florida to defeat Donald Trump is recasting the presidential contest in the president's must-win state, forcing his campaign to spend big to shore up his position and freeing up Democratic cash to expand the electoral map elsewhere. Bloomberg's massive advertising and ground-game spending, which began roughly a month ago, has thrown Trump into a defensive crouch across the arc of Sunbelt states. As a result, the president's campaign has scaled back its TV ad buys in crucial Northern swing states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan — a vacuum being filled by a constellation of outside political groups backing Joe Biden.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed strict coronavirus restrictions on England's second-largest urban area Tuesday, after talks with officials in Greater Manchester collapsed over how much financial aid should be handed to residents whose livelihoods will be hit by the new measures. Johnson, who has been struggling to impose his plan for localized restrictions on restive regions, said he “bitterly” regrets ordering measures that would damage businesses. Britain's government and local politicians have been standing off for days over the effectiveness of a three-tier alert system Johnson introduced last week.
When former LifeLock spokesperson Rudy Giuliani approached Fox News with the trove of emails he alleged had been retrieved from a laptop belonging to Hunter Biden, the network declined to run the story over concerns about its credibility, according to a new report. Giuliani previously told The New York Times that he had chosen to place the material with The New York Post because "either nobody else would take it, or if they took it, they would spend all the time they could to try to contradict it before they put it out." The Post, a sister company of Fox News, published the unverified emails in a Wednesday exposé, which drew widespread blowback for its dubious sourcing.
Apple's iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro bring big changes like 5G support, a refreshed design, and cameras that are better at seeing in the dark. While 5G has been touted as the main attraction of Apple's new iPhones, the upgrade to 5G isn't a change most people will notice right away. Aside from 5G, the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro come with a bunch of small changes that together make for a noticeably different pair of iPhones that are a step up from their predecessors.
Ivanka Trump has been mocked for saying she is using the coronavirus pandemic to learn how to play the guitar, just a few days after it was reported that eight million Americans have fallen into poverty since May. During an interview on Monday, Ms Trump, 38, who serves as an adviser to her father, president Donald Trump, revealed she has started learning guitar over the last few months. For a lot of us during this pandemic, we've reconnected to some of life's simple pleasures — board games, for example.
