Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has mostly stayed out of New York City's mayoral race, but she had some harsh words for candidate Andrew Yang, the presumptive favorite, on Tuesday. Yang had tweeted Monday that he is "standing with the people of Israel" amid the escalating violence between Israeli forces and Hamas, which stems from the government threatening to evict Palestinian families from their homes in east Jerusalem. Yang's words ultimately led his campaign to cancel a planned trip to help distribute groceries in Queens ahead of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim celebration marking the end of Ramadan.
Four children missing since last year were found Tuesday, three of them barricaded with their mom in a safe room at their grandmother's Arkansas home. Their mother, Lisa Goodman, lost custody of the kids but refused to turn them over to authorities and reportedly fled the state, according to the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office. They were ages 5, 7, 15 and 16 at the time Goodman lost custody, KATV reported.
The U.S Department of Defense will remove China's Xiaomi Corp from a government blacklist, a court filing showed, clearing the way for any future American investment in the Beijing-based smartphone maker. The filing stated that the two parties would agree to resolve their ongoing litigation without further contest, bringing to an end a brief and controversial spat between the hardware company and Washington. A Xiaomi spokeswoman said the company is watching the latest developments closely, without elaborating.
Despite its standing as the world's most vaccinated country, the 115-island archipelago Seychelles is seeing a dramatic resurgence in COVID-19 transmission, bringing its daily case rate to "a higher number of infections per capita than India," The Wall Street Journal reports. To date, approximately 67 percent of Seychelles' population is vaccinated — the majority of those citizens received Chinese vaccine Sinopharm, while the remainder received Covishield, a derivative of AstraZeneca's shot manufactured in India. Authorities have not yet disclosed how many of the new cases are among Sinopharm recipients, but "the situation is being watched all over the world for what it says about the effectiveness of vaccines," writes the Journal.

California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner told CNN, in an interview broadcast Tuesday, that she "didn't even vote" in the 2020 election. But "Los Angeles County records show she actually did cast a ballot last fall," Politico reported Tuesday night, with notarized proof. Jenner didn't leave much wriggle room, telling CNN's Dana Bash she didn't vote for president or any of the 12 ballot measures because "I didn't see any propositions that I really had one side or the other."
"A conspiracy ripping through the anti-vax world may finally drive some anti-maskers to do the unthinkable: wear a mask and keep their distance," Vice News reports. The conspiracy theory claims, falsely, that vaccinated people "shed" certain proteins that can infect unvaccinated people and cause some sort of harm, usually tied to reproduction. For those who do believe that vaccinated people can somehow infect them with vaccine proteins — one private school in Miami barred vaccinated teachers from interacting with unvaccinated students — some "anti-vax influencers" are suggesting they protect themselves by "social distancing, the very strategy the have long decried," Vice reports.

The Daily Show host Trevor Noah on Tuesday addressed the recent tensions in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine—as much as could reasonably be done in the time it takes to boil an egg. In recent days, Israeli police clashed with Palestinians at a Jerusalem mosque, nine children were among at least two dozen people killed by Israeli airstrikes, and Gaza militants fired rockets of their own at Israel, killing three. Noah, who acknowledged that there isn't “any TV show [that] in ten minutes is going to solve [the] Israel-Palestine [problem],” did make some keen observations.

"Senator Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely and completely incorrect," responded Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "The NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology," he said. Sen. Paul brought up what's known as "gain-of-function" research, a field focused on coaxing viruses to mutate and potentially increase transmissibility, alleging America was "juicing up" natural pathogens and sharing its findings with a laboratory in Wuhan, the city in China where the novel Coronavirus first emerged.
The families of more than 140 Black people killed by US police—including relatives of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Daunte Wright, and Michael Brown—urged the United Nations in a letter on Monday to push forward with its plans to investigate systemic racism and policing in the US and beyond. The epidemic of police violence has been directly and disproportionately targeted at people of color,” the letter to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet reads, which was also signed by numerous civil rights and activist groups. Indigenous People and people of African descent experience the highest rates of fatal police shootings, followed by Latinx people.
While politicians battle critical race theory, the progressive dogma and its offshoot, the New York Times' 1619 Project, have already taken hold in Hollywood. This week's example is the Barry Jenkins series The Underground Railroad, now streaming on Amazon and warping America's racial history for anyone who watches it. This ten-episode program is a big-ticket item meant to confirm Jenkins's seriousness in which he dramatizes the efforts by two slaves, Cora (Thuso Mbedu) and Caesar (Aaron Pierre), to escape Southern tyranny and go north, where their struggle continues.

"He will do almost anything to get the gavel and become speaker, short of throwing his mother under the bus," Mitchell said.

In a macabre twist to a situation that is already too dire to comprehend, authorities in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have had to call in excavators to dig a mass grave after nearly 100 bloated and decomposing bodies were found floating in the Ganges River. Around 40 bodies were found in one riverbank area, and groups of 10 or more were found downstream near cremation ghats that had run out of firewood. “We retrieved 71 bodies,” Buxar Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Singh told The Hindu.
At least nine states have announced that they will be ending participation in unemployment assistance programs directed at alleviating problems produced by the coronavirus pandemic. Among them: $300 unemployment checks, which for any state that doesn't opt out will be extended through Sept. 6. Tennessee is one of the latest states to opt out of the program, as many state Republicans argue the additional funds allow low-wage workers to make more money while staying at home.

A sweeping voting rights and campaign finance reform bill is headed for a vote in the Senate, after Republicans filed several amendments to try to strip critical elements from the For The People Act during a contentious, day-long committee hearing that underscored the GOP's acutely partisan barricade. Senators cast a series of party-line votes on Republican-backed amendments – from attempts to disenfranchise formerly incarcerated people to criminalising so-called “ballot harvesting” – that signalled the bill's fate in the evenly divided upper chamber as lawmakers confront the moral and political minefield of voting rights.
“If Facebook lets Trump back on Facebook and Instagram, he'll assuredly restart his assault on democracy.”
“Facebook should have known better than to believe that it could limit speech on its platform without setting a terrible precedent.”
“Providing a microphone and an amplifier for deceit isn't fighting the good fight for free speech.”
“It’s no defense of Mr. Trump’s conduct to say that the digital public square shouldn’t suppress speech by political leaders.”
“The former president no longer gets the ‘head of state’ exception to terms of service.”
