A quick-thinking man says he survived the raging wildfire tearing through Southern California by hiding in a creek with his dog. Matt Armbruster told CBS News that he first ignored official orders to evacuate his Agoura Hills home, which was located dangerously close to the rapidly spreading Woolsey Fire. Armbruster told the outlet that he stayed in the water for almost two hours as the fire burned around him, admitting he thought he would die there.
The controversial director of elections in Broward County said Tuesday that her division will finish a machine recount by the state deadline of Thursday afternoon, adding that she might retire after this election. “We will complete the recount … I think we’re on a good schedule and we will finish before the deadline on Thursday,” Brenda Snipes told reporters in the media room, which is separated by a pane of glass from the room where elections workers are retabulating the results of the Florida election that took place a week ago. If any of those races is within a margin of 0.25 percent after the machine recount, then the state will move to a hand recount of the ballots.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that members of his country’s intelligence community had listened to Turkish audio recordings of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A 10-year-old Arizona girl says she was able to ward off a potential kidnapper by asking him for her family's secret "code word" on Wednesday. Brenda James told KSAZ that her daughter, whose name has not been released, was walking with a friend near a park in San Tan Valley, Ariz., at 3:45 p.m. when a man in a white SUV approached the two children. The quick-thinking 10-year-old knew something wasn't right and asked the man for her family's predetermined "code word" before she would get in the vehicle.
At least 42 people are dead and 228 people still missing in the Camp fire, which left the town of Paradise and surrounding areas in ashes, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters on Monday night. The fire, Honea said, is the deadliest single fire on wildlands in California’s history. California has been struggling to contain wildfires raging on both ends of the state.

Saudi King Salman will resume an unprecedented domestic tour next week, the royal court said Tuesday, as the kingdom grapples with an international crisis over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The king is now set to visit the "northern regions of the kingdom" next week to "inspect the condition of citizens and inaugurate a number of development projects", the official Saudi Press Agency said citing the royal court.
