Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., lashed out at Fox News hours after host Tucker Carlson and a guest had criticized her climate policy proposals, while suggesting her district is “dirty” due to its immigrant population. On Tuesday, Carlson and his guest Seth Barron, an editor at the City Journal, a conservative urban policy magazine, took aim at Ocasio-Cortez while playing a video of trash littering the streets of her New York district.

Not long before a 21-year-old Saudi Royal Air Force trainee shot and killed three American sailors Friday at a naval base in Pensacola, Florida, he called his mother and his brother back home. What was missing was any hint of what was to come: opening fire in a classroom building at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, shooting three fatally and wounding eight more before being killed by a sheriff's deputy. Alshamrani seemed utterly normal in that last conversation, his family insisted in interviews this week in Saudi Arabia.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee says he has been "named to head up" what would be an unconstitutional 2024 re-election campaign for Donald Trump. Mr Huckabee, father of former White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, made the explosive claim in a pair of tweets on Thursday afternoon in which he also said the US president was "eligible" for a third term due to congressional investigations into him. It was unclear if Mr Huckabee was serious, but there is no indication there exists any official 2024 re-election campaign for Mr Trump, who faces a battle just to win a second term in November 2020.
China has tested a new submarine-launched missile that can hit the United States. The first flight test of the JL-3 missile was conducted in November from Bohai Bay in the Yellow Sea, according to the South China Morning Post, citing an unnamed source. “The new missile has a flight range of about 9,000 kilometers (5,600 miles), which is less than the 12,000-kilometer (7,500-mile) range of the American Trident II and Russian Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs),” the Post reported.
Getty Images / Alexander Shcherbak A growing number Republicans are satisfied with the cost of healthcare in the United States, according to a new Gallup poll released Wednesday. The increase comes as another major index from the Labor Department showed average insurance prices spiking 20% over the last year. The poll noted overall satisfaction with US healthcare costs is the highest since 2009 as just over one in four Americans are content with the healthcare pricing environment — though much of that boost was driven by the uptick in Republican approval.
The United States has reached a "phase-one" trade deal in principle with China, a source briefed on talks between the two nations said on Thursday, saying a statement from the White House was expected soon. Ahead of the meeting, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told senators that announcements were possibly "imminent" on U.S. tariffs, senior Republican Senator John Cornyn told reporters. U.S. negotiators have offered to reduce tariffs on about $375 billion in Chinese goods by 50% across the board, two people familiar with the negotiations said, and suspend tariffs on $160 billion in goods scheduled to go into effect on Sunday.
The German-Russian Chamber of Commerce called for retaliatory sanctions on Thursday after US lawmakers gave initial approval to a bill that would punish contractors working on a Russian pipeline to Germany. "Europe should respond to sanctions that damage Europe with counter-sanctions," Matthias Schepp, head of the German-Russian Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement. The 9.5-billion-euro ($10.6 billion) Nord Stream 2 pipeline will run under the Baltic Sea and is set to double shipments of Russian natural gas to Germany.

An investigation into the fatal shooting of a Houston police sergeant has found that his bullet-resistant vest did not fail as originally believed, rather the rounds struck the officer outside the armor, according to a Houston police department statement. A preliminary probe into last week's death of Sgt. Christopher Brewster had raised concerns that the fatal rounds had penetrated the so-called "soft body armor." But in a statement issued Wednesday night, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said further forensic examinations showed the department's initial concerns "are unfounded."
There are fresh affronts to democracy daily with Donald Trump in the White House. This is arguably the most dangerous thing to happen to the American system of government since Trump became president. Trump, his administration and all the congressional Republicans who go along are saying the executive branch is totally beyond any congressional oversight.
The U.S. Navy should acquire small, heavily-armed missile corvettes and deploy them like modern versions of World War II torpedo boats. “The U.S. Navy has long identified threats in the littorals and the need to fight within these close waters, but it still struggles with creating a capable fighting force that provides speed, lethality and a deterrent,” Smith wrote. The Navy in the 1970s developed a class of missile-armed hydrofoils, but canceled acquisition of the type after building just six.

Russia's foreign ministry said Thursday that it has expelled two German diplomats in retaliation for Germany doing the same last week. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it was making the move “due to the reciprocity principle” and ordered them to leave the country within the next seven days. The bust was a bust, and it could end up costing New York City some serious green. A day after prosecutors dropped criminal charges in a case spotlighting confusion over hemp, marijuana and conflicting laws, the Brooklyn brothers caught in the chaos took the first step toward suing the city and the police department. Oren and Ronen Levy filed notices of claim Wednesday, saying the “nightmare” ordeal that began with Ronen's Nov. 2 arrest and the seizure of 106 pounds (48 kilograms) of hemp plants tarnished their reputations and threatened their livelihoods selling CBD, the extract showing up lately in everything candy to coffee.

At the UN Security Council, the US ambassador, Kelly Craft, voiced concern that North Korea was indicating it would test intercontinental ballistic missiles which are designed to attack the continental United States with nuclear weapons.

The FAA approved the change after Boeing appealed its rejection, which had said Boeing could not sufficiently prove that the fuel tank would not ignite. The FAA's decision will today be scrutinized by the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in light of its oversight of Boeing's 737 Max planes, which was involved in two fatal crashes.
