Among the more revealing anecdotes outlined in the recently released Mueller report was a description of President Donald Trump's reaction to the appointment of a special counsel in May 2017. This is the terrible,” the President said, according to notes written by Jody Hunt, the chief of staff of then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions. According to the Mueller report, Trump's reaction was a direct response to hearing that Special Counsel Robert Mueller had been appointed by then-Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
A Republican lawmaker's invitation for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to meet with coal miners in his home state of Kentucky backfired completely after the progressive Washington newcomer accepted without hesitation. Ms Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to serve in the US House of Representatives, has served as a lightning rod across party lines for her Green New Deal resolution, which seeks to provide a comprehensive response to the global threat of climate change. Andy Barr, the Kentucky Republican who initially invited the 29-year-old congresswoman to his state, said at the time that local coal miners would tell her “what the Green New Deal would mean for their families, their paychecks,” while suggesting the resolution could destroy their industry.
A New York man – who allegedly threatened to kill Rep. Ilhan Omar – and another man caught up in online discussions about murdering Muslim-Americans both remained behind bars Wednesday. Patrick W. Carlineo Jr., 55, of Rathbone was charged on April 4 with threatening to shoot the Minnesota Democrat, who is Muslim, in an angry telephone call to her Washington, D.C., office on March 21. Thomas Alonzo Bolin, 22, of Greece was charged on April 3 with lying to FBI agents who were investigating a Facebook conversation in which Bolin and at least one other man allegedly discussed committing mass murder of Muslim-Americans in Baltimore.
The metal rooster which perched on the top of Notre-Dame's spire was found in the rubble on Tuesday and appears to have been spared the worst of the fire. It is dented but properly restorable,” a Ministry of Culture spokesman said of the rooster, which contains three relics that may also have survived the blaze. As the rooster was partially crushed when it fell off the spire, the extent of the damage to its contents is unknown.
McDonald's Corp said it would remove costlier, premium burgers from its menus in favor of its more popular Quarter Pounders, shifting its focus to simpler and quickly-served burgers. The company said its new deluxe and bacon Quarter Pounders received good feedback and it would continue to focus on such items. "It (the removal) probably has more to do about the process of cooking the burger in McDonald's than it does what the consumer is saying about the food," said Howard Penney, a managing director at Hedgeye Risk Management.
With Notre Dame still smoldering, French President Emmanuel Macron promised to rebuild the great cathedral and called for donors. France's luxury industry led the way, with Bernard Arnault, the billionaire founder of the LVMH fashion conglomerate, promising 200 million euros ($226 million) and Francois Pinault of rival fashion group Kering 100 million euros. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo offered money from city coffers and promised to organize an international donor conference.
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that the United States' reaction to floods that killed dozens of people had revealed Washington's "vicious" nature. At least 76 people have died after torrential rainfall which has also caused billions of dollars worth of damage since March 19. Iran's Red Crescent has repeatedly complained that US banking sanctions re-imposed last year make it impossible to receive donations from outside the country.
The building itself also contained one of America's largest Porsche collections according to the Charlotte Observer. The rather unassuming red brick building didn't boast about the treasures within, but video from the Charlotte Observer revealed a huge hole in the roof and the charred remains of what appears to be a 550 Spyder amongst other less identifiable wreckage. Bob Ingram, a retired pharmaceuticals executive, and his wife reportedly started the collection in 1998 after a visit to the Monterey Historic Automobile Races.
All the 29 people killed in a tour bus crash on Portugal's Madeira Island were German, Portugal's foreign ministry confirmed Thursday. The bus carrying 55 people, all German tourists except a Portuguese driver and guide, rolled down a steep hill after veering off the road on a bend east of Madeira's capital, Funchal, on Wednesday evening when it was still light and in fine weather. The crash injured 28 others.
Bernie Sanders drew big ratings and rave reviews for his Fox News town hall on Monday night. And President Trump apparently isn't happy about his favorite cable network's role in it. Many Trump Fans & Signs were outside of the @FoxNews Studio last night in the now thriving (Thank you President Trump) Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for the interview with Crazy Bernie Sanders,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday night.
A 20-year-old college student plummeted 100 feet to her death off a cliff during a school trip last weekend. Although it is considered one of Arkansas' most photographed spots, Hawksbill Crag has been the site of multiple deaths by unintentional falls in recent years, including that of a 19-year-old University of Arkansas coed in 2016. Briar Cliff University released a statement on Saturday following Norton's tragic death.
Some problems were caused when testers removed what appeared to be a protective film on the screen, that was in fact not meant to be removed, though Samsung didn't do a good enough job of communicating this point in its packaging. My colleague Eli Blumenthal and I – both of us are reviewing the device – did not remove the film on our evaluation unit and, at least so far, have not encountered the issues some others have reported. We're still in the process of testing the device.
Dozens of medical professionals in Appalachia, a region hard-hit by the U.S. opioid crisis, have been charged with writing hundreds of thousands of illegal prescriptions and committing health care fraud, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday. Sixty people, including 31 doctors, were accused of illegally prescribing opioid drugs in exchange for cash and sexual favors in the rural, mountainous region stretching from Pennsylvania and West Virginia to Alabama and Louisiana. The opioid epidemic is the deadliest drug crisis in American history, and Appalachia has suffered the consequences more than perhaps any other region,” Attorney General William P. Barr said in a statement.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continued to tease a Kentucky Republican lawmaker for backpedaling on his invitation for her to visit the Bluegrass State. The freshman New York Democrat – often referred to as "AOC" – used her Twitter platform Wednesday to again call attention to Rep. Andy Barr, who invited her to the state last month to tour an underground coal mine. Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, now says she similarly asked Barr to come to the Bronx, which is part of her New York district, to participate in a town hall on climate change.
Boeing has conducted a final test flight of a 737 MAX model with an updated anti-stall system prior to its certification by aviation authorities, the aerospace manufacturer said Wednesday. CEO Dennis Muilenberg tweeted a video where he said the test flight was carried out on Tuesday, adding that test pilots have completed 120 flights totaling more than 203 hours of airtime with the software fix for the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). Investigators have zeroed in on the system as a factor behind the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes in October and in March respectively, killing nearly 350 people in total.
Mazda's talk of bringing a diesel engine to the United States was starting to feel like that friend of yours who insists he has a girlfriend, but whose girlfriend totally, definitely sounds made up. It'd be great, Mazda said, back in 2010, to have a new diesel that's efficient, powerful, and able to pass stringent emissions standards without a costly exhaust aftertreatment system. After years of delays, games of musical vehicle applications (it'll be in a Mazda 6-no, wait, a CX-5!), not to mention the chilling effect of Volkswagen's sprawling emissions-cheating scandal, Mazda's diesel flame is finally real-even if it's not quite the stunner Mazda originally made it out to be.
American Airlines pilots flying an Airbus A321 say it banked on its own during takeoff, causing a strike to the plane's left wing. The incident is now under investigation.
The Mueller report will not change political opinions of President Trump. Democrats will continue to hate the president and Republicans will continue to think Trump got a raw deal because two years of his presidency were inhibited by an investigation that turned up no collusion. Robert Mueller will get plaudits for his uncovering the depths of the Russian meddling but will have to answer questions about why he didn't move to compel Trump to testify.
A sprinkler system check at a church that was frequented by George Washington and Benjamin Franklin drew a crowd Wednesday, with dozens of people watching as sheets of water poured from the 196-foot (60-meter) steeple. Christ Church leaders breathed a sigh of relief at the sight: The system check showed that the church has done all it can do to protect itself from a fire similar to the one that tore through Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris this week. "One reason we did this was to show symbolic solidarity with Notre Dame," said Barbara Hogue, executive director of the Christ Church preservation fund.
Verizon appears to be incentivizing consumers to make purchases online rather than at one of its brick-and-mortar retail stores, as CNET reports that the mobile carrier is lowering activation and upgrade fees on its site and in its My Verizon app from $30 to $20 starting this Thursday. Alternatively, if you prefer a “full-service experience” at a Verizon store, you'll now have to pay $40 to activate a line or upgrade to a new device. CNET's report doesn't include many details about this new policy, and as The Verge points out, Verizon's fees often go up or down depending on a variety of factors, such as if you're on a prepaid or monthly plan, or if you're activating a new line or just upgrading to a new phone.
Thousand of Peruvians said goodbye on Thursday in Lima to ex-president Alan Garcia -- who killed himself this week - in the second of three days of national mourning declared by President Martin Vizcarra. Garcia shot himself in the head on Wednesday to avoid arrest in connection with alleged bribes from Brazilian builder Odebrecht, in the most dramatic turn yet in Latin America's largest graft scandal. Friends, allies and leaders across the political spectrum paid homage to Garcia at the headquarters of his APRA party, one of Latin America's oldest political parties, and one which twice helped usher Garcia to the presidency.
Some merchants choose to not accept cards that charge higher swipe fees than others, like American Express. While the notion that American Express swipe fees are significantly higher than other credit card companies' swipe fees may be a bit of a myth, the fact is American Express has a lower acceptance rate than other card networks. Here's what you need to know about why American Express isn't accepted everywhere and what you can do about it.
Ukraine's security service SBU said on Wednesday it had captured a Russian military intelligence hit squad responsible for the attempted murder of a Ukrainian military spy in the run-up to a presidential election on Sunday. The issue of how to deal with Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014 and backs pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, is prominent ahead of the vote, with incumbent Petro Poroshenko casting himself as the commander-in-chief Ukraine needs to defend the country. Vasyl Hrytsak, the head of the SBU, the main intelligence agency, told a news conference in Kiev that seven members of the Russian group had been detained and charged and that an eighth person had been detained on Wednesday morning.
