The House Judiciary Committee debate over articles of impeachment against President Trump took an ugly turn Thursday when Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., brought up Hunter Biden's past drug use while defending the president's call for Ukraine to investigate him. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., took issue with Gaetz, who was arrested for DUI in 2008. “I would say the pot calling the kettle black is not something we should do,” Johnson said.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., lashed out at Fox News hours after host Tucker Carlson and a guest had criticized her climate policy proposals, while suggesting her district is “dirty” due to its immigrant population. On Tuesday, Carlson and his guest Seth Barron, an editor at the City Journal, a conservative urban policy magazine, took aim at Ocasio-Cortez while playing a video of trash littering the streets of her New York district.
China has tested a new submarine-launched missile that can hit the United States. The first flight test of the JL-3 missile was conducted in November from Bohai Bay in the Yellow Sea, according to the South China Morning Post, citing an unnamed source. “The new missile has a flight range of about 9,000 kilometers (5,600 miles), which is less than the 12,000-kilometer (7,500-mile) range of the American Trident II and Russian Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs),” the Post reported.
Russia said on Friday it was alarmed after the United States tested a ground-launched ballistic missile that would have been banned under the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the RIA news agency reported. The United States carried out the test on Thursday. Washington formally withdrew from the 1987 INF pact with Russia in August after determining that Moscow was violating the treaty, an accusation the Kremlin has denied.
Not long before a 21-year-old Saudi Royal Air Force trainee shot and killed three American sailors Friday at a naval base in Pensacola, Florida, he called his mother and his brother back home. What was missing was any hint of what was to come: opening fire in a classroom building at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, shooting three fatally and wounding eight more before being killed by a sheriff's deputy. Alshamrani seemed utterly normal in that last conversation, his family insisted in interviews this week in Saudi Arabia.

An 18-year-old college student has been found stabbed to death in a park just a block away from the New York City Columbia University campus. Tessa Majors was a student at Barnard College, a private liberal arts college in Manhattan that is affiliated with the prestigious university near where she was found with multiple stab wounds. A statement from Barnard president Sian Leah Beilock to students said that Majors was victim of an armed robbery, and that her parents had been notified.
The bust was a bust, and it could end up costing New York City some serious green. A day after prosecutors dropped criminal charges in a case spotlighting confusion over hemp, marijuana and conflicting laws, the Brooklyn brothers caught in the chaos took the first step toward suing the city and the police department. Oren and Ronen Levy filed notices of claim Wednesday, saying the “nightmare” ordeal that began with Ronen's Nov. 2 arrest and the seizure of 106 pounds (48 kilograms) of hemp plants tarnished their reputations and threatened their livelihoods selling CBD, the extract showing up lately in everything candy to coffee.
Getty The official exit poll points to a huge majority for Boris Johnson's Conservative Party Johnson is on course to win the party's biggest parliamentary majority for decades with the opposition Labour party on course for its worst result in a century. The result, if borne out, will give Johnson the freedom to radically change Britain's future outside the EU. It kills off any prospect of Britain's exit from the EU being prevented.
Democrats in the House of Representatives on Tuesday unveiled two articles of impeachment against President Trump. The articles — one for abuse of power, the other for obstruction of Congress — present their case for removing Trump from office based on evidence compiled in an investigation over the past couple of weeks into his actions involving Ukraine. About an hour after releasing the articles, Democrats gathered for another press conference — this time to announce they would support the president's proposed agreement with Canada and Mexico, known as the USMCA.
Nancy Mace declared her love for grandfathers Thursday morning, but not before the Republican candidate for Congress added a caveat: “I love granddads everywhere,” said Mace, who's running to represent South Carolina's 1st Congressional District in 2020. Mace, a current South Carolina state lawmaker, was one of four women who appeared Thursday morning on "Fox & Friends" to launch the “Conservative Squad,” the Republican response to four young Democratic congresswomen who have become the face of the progressive movement in Washington, D.C. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.; Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.; Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.; and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.; gained popularity across the country – especially with young Democrats – shortly after being elected to the House of Representatives in 2018.
The Interdiction Assault Ship (IAS) would go after the Kirovs, bombarding them with 16-inch guns and Harpoon missiles. Embarked Harrier jump jets could also join in the fight. The ships would be an economy of force measure, allowing aircraft carriers to go about their preassigned wartime duties with minimal distraction.

The state of Washington on Thursday proposed bans on the sale of "assault weapons" and high capacity magazines, part of a package of gun laws meant to address a rising wave of U.S. mass shootings. If successful, Washington would become the seventh U.S. state to ban assault weapons, which it defines as semi-automatic rifles with at least one military feature, and the ninth to limit the capacity of ammunition magazines. "We should be making it harder for those who want to inflict mass violence and destruction upon innocent people," Governor Jay Inslee said in announcing the gun-control push.

A Scandinavian woman says she was forced by Cypriot police to withdraw a rape claim or face arrest, in a striking parallel to the case of a British teenager who was allegedly gang raped on the Mediterranean island. The Scandinavian woman said police officers questioned her aggressively for several hours after she was raped by two men outside a nightclub. The officers accused her of lying and said that if she did not withdraw the rape claim they would arrest her and send her to prison.
Debris believed to be from a military transport plane carrying 38 people that vanished two days ago en route to the Antarctic has been discovered in the frigid, treacherous waters between the icy continent and South America, Chile's Air Force said Wednesday. Air Force Gen. Eduardo Mosqueira said “sponge” material, possibly from the plane's fuel tank, was found floating roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the place the C-130 Hercules last had radio contact. The debris will be analyzed to see if it corresponds to the missing plane, he said, adding that the process could take up to two days.
Getty Images / Alexander Shcherbak A growing number Republicans are satisfied with the cost of healthcare in the United States, according to a new Gallup poll released Wednesday. The increase comes as another major index from the Labor Department showed average insurance prices spiking 20% over the last year. The poll noted overall satisfaction with US healthcare costs is the highest since 2009 as just over one in four Americans are content with the healthcare pricing environment — though much of that boost was driven by the uptick in Republican approval.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that after months of haggling over key details, House Democrats had officially agreed to back a revised version of Trump's new trade pact — an announcement made just one dizzying hour after House Democratic leaders unveiled articles of impeachment against him. Many progressives were apoplectic about the mixed messaging, arguing — like Trump — that the USMCA would effectively help keep in office the same dangerous president Democrats were simultaneously endeavoring to remove.
A man has been arrested for attempting to take a driving test on his mother's behalf – by dressing like her in a bold attempt to fool examiners. Heitor Márcio Schiave, 43, wore a stuffed bra, floral top, long skirt, earrings, and a handbag to impersonate his mother at the State Department of Traffic in Novo Mutum Parana, in the Brazilian Amazon. Mr Schiave's mother, Dona Maria, had failed her driving test three times before he decided to take the matter into his own hands.
The U.S. Navy should acquire small, heavily-armed missile corvettes and deploy them like modern versions of World War II torpedo boats. “The U.S. Navy has long identified threats in the littorals and the need to fight within these close waters, but it still struggles with creating a capable fighting force that provides speed, lethality and a deterrent,” Smith wrote. The Navy in the 1970s developed a class of missile-armed hydrofoils, but canceled acquisition of the type after building just six.
Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi said on Friday that the United States had seriously damaged the hard-won mutual trust between the countries by criticizing Beijing over issues such as Hong Kong and the treatment of Muslim Uighurs. "Such behavior is almost paranoid, and is indeed rare in international exchanges, seriously damaging the hard-won foundation of mutual trust between China and the United States, and seriously weakening the United States' international credibility," said State Councillor Wang.
Directors of an Italian museum are optimistic that a painting found hidden in a wall this week is a Gustav Klimt work stolen two decades ago, a director said on Thursday. Preliminary indications appear that the painting of a woman found by gardeners on Tuesday inside an external wall on the museum's grounds could indeed by the "Portrait of a Woman" painted by the Austrian artist in 1916-1917. "What interests us the most is whether it's the original or not, rather than the theft investigation," said Massimo Ferrari, president of the Ricci Oddi Gallery of Modern Art, a museum in Piacenza, in northwest Italy.
