Minnesota bill would create nation's 1st office investigating missing Black women, girls

Minnesota state lawmakers are moving forward with a bill that would establish the nation's first office to investigate cases of missing Black women and girls as tens of thousands of women of color remain missing in the U.S. On Feb. 20, the Minnesota House voted 110-19 in favor of advancing House Bill HF55. And it is on the fast track this year to be signed into law,” Rep. Ruth Richardson, DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party), the bill's author, told Yahoo News. Here's what the Supreme Court could rule on the legality of Biden's student debt forgiveness plan

The fate of President Biden's $400 billion student debt relief program is now in the hands of the Supreme Court, whose decision as to whether Biden overstepped his executive power could significantly impact the lives of over 40 million U.S. student loan borrowers. The nine justices heard two cases on Tuesday that challenge the debt relief. Biden v. Nebraska was brought by six Republican-led states — Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Carolina — that argue Biden's plan creates a direct injury because it would result in lost tax revenue for each state.

Israel and Iran edge closer to war, but experts say conflict isn't inevitable

Escalating tensions between Iran and Israel have brought the two countries to the verge of war. While experts disagree on the probability of military conflict between the Jewish state and the Islamic Republic, they agree that the present moment is rife with potential pitfalls. Iran could be approaching the capacity to manufacture a nuclear weapon; a top Pentagon official testified earlier this week that Tehran has made “remarkable” progress and could be within 12 days of enriching sufficient uranium for a nuclear weapon.

Secret Service and ICE conducted warrantless stingray surveillance, says watchdog

A government watchdog has found that the Secret Service and ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit repeatedly failed to obtain the correct legal paperwork when carrying out invasive cell phone surveillance. The findings were published last week by Homeland Security's inspector general, tasked with oversight of the U.S. federal department and its many law enforcement units, which said that the agencies often used cell-site simulators without obtaining the appropriate search warrants. Cell-site simulators — commonly known as "stingrays" — are surveillance gear used by law enforcement that impersonate cell towers to trick nearby cell phones into connecting to them, allowing police to track their real-time location.
