Trump tweets resignation of Attorney General William Barr

President Trump announced Monday that Attorney General William Barr had submitted his resignation and would be stepping down “just before Christmas.” Highly respected Richard Donoghue will be taking over the duties of Deputy Attorney General. The president's announcement, which had been widely expected after he publicly criticized Barr for not doing more to help him overthrow the results of the presidential election, came minutes after electors in California cast ballots that confirmed that Joe Biden had cleared the 270 electoral vote threshold to become president-elect.

'She's a wonderful and loving person': Ghislaine Maxwell launches fresh bid for release in time for Christmas

Ghislaine Maxwell has revealed her vast hidden wealth and claimed that she does not pose a flight risk as she would never abandon her husband, in a plea to a judge to be released from prison in time for Christmas. The British socialite, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of helping associate Jeffrey Epstein recruit and groom underage girls to engage in illegal sexual acts in the mid-1990s, offered $28.5 million (£21m) in a fresh application for bail. Ms Maxwell's spouse, whose name has been redacted from the court documents, is understood by The Telegraph to be Scott Borgerson, an American tech CEO she married in 2016.

Iran's president says country would rejoin nuclear deal within an hour of U.S. signing on

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Monday said if the United States returns to the Iran nuclear deal, his country will follow within an hour. The deal was made during the Obama administration in 2015, lifting sanctions on Tehran in exchange for Iran reducing its uranium stockpile and dismantling its centrifuges. Rouhani said he will not discuss any changes to the accord or restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program, The Guardian reports.

Senior Republicans accept Biden as president-elect, reject talk of overturning election

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Several senior Republican U.S. senators on Monday acknowledged Democrat Joe Biden as the country's president-elect after the Electoral College affirmed his victory, and rejected the idea of overturning the 2020 presidential election in Congress. As a few of President Donald Trump's most loyal backers contemplated a last-ditch effort to reverse his Nov. 3 election defeat, a growing number of Republicans appeared ready to defy Trump and recognize Biden as the winner more than a month after the vote. Senator John Thune, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, said lawmakers had the right to challenge electoral votes.

Joseph Epstein wiped from university website after backlash over ‘sexist drivel’ Jill Biden column

Northwestern University has distanced itself from its former lecturer Joseph Epstein who, in an article published by the Wall Street Journal, criticised the incoming first lady for using the title Dr when she is not a medical professional. Epstein's article has met with a backlash after he said the use of the title by Dr Jill Biden, who has a doctorate in education, “sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic”. Northwestern has now scrubbed Epstein's page from its website, where he was previously listed as an emeritus lecturer of English.

Biggest snowstorm in years set to target Northeast

It has been nearly five years since New York City has seen more than a foot of snow in one storm, when Central Park recorded its biggest snowstorm on record with 27.5 inches in January 2016. Much of the densely populated parts of the Northeast stand to see a walloping of heavy snow as a major nor'easter takes aim. For cities like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York, a major nor'easter seems long overdue.

Eliz Orban says she and her family were kicked off a United Airlines flight after being unable to get her 2-year-old daughter to keep her mask on. United Airlines has a policy that states all passengers over the age of 2 must wear a "face covering" during flights. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children over the age of 2 should wear a mask, the World Health Organization says that children under the age of 5 should be exempt.

William Barr's exit is bad news for Trump's hopes of a 11th-hour pardoning spree

As attorney general to George HW Bush, Barr successfully urged the late president to grant a passel of pardons in the aftermath of the Iran-Contra scandal and Bush's 1992 loss to Bill Clinton. Indeed, in Barr's telling he was a driving force nearly three decades ago, running roughshod over justice department “naysayers”. Specifically, Barr fought for the pardon of Caspar Weinberger, Ronald Reagan's defense secretary who was under indictment, and five others, including Elliot Abrams.

Trump signs executive order making Christmas Eve a federal holiday in 2020

Christmas Eve will be considered a federal holiday in the United States this year, according to a new executive order signed by President Trump. Under the executive order, signed Friday, “all executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Thursday, 24 December 2020,  the day before Christmas Day”. The executive order does make an exception, however, for the heads of executive departments and agencies, who may determine that “certain offices and installations of their organisations, or parts thereof, must remain open,” as well as for employees who may be needed to work for “reasons of national security, defense, or other public need”.

When the mother of a Black ninth grader at a private school in Charlotte, North Carolina, learned last month that his English class was going to be studying August Wilson's “Fences,” an acclaimed play examining racism in 1950s America, she complained to the school. The drama, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1987 and was adapted into a critically praised film starring Denzel Washington in 2016, is about a Black family and is peppered with racial slurs from the first page. Faith Fox, a lawyer and single mother, said in an interview that she imagined her son's mostly white class at the Providence Day School reading the dialogue out loud.

For nearly a year, San Francisco, like many cities across the U.S., has been housing people experiencing homelessness in motels and hotels with money officials received from the Coronavirus, Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. The federal measure passed in March allocated $150 billion in direct assistance to municipalities for expenditures incurred due to the public health emergency and an additional $4 billion nationwide to shelter the homeless. Now, with the federal deadline to spend the CARES Act money set to expire by Dec. 31 and amid growing complaints over the costly hotel shelter programs, many city officials are considering putting homeless people back on the streets or in crowded...
