While President Trump's chief of staff on Monday attempted to clarify the assertion that the United States is “not going to control” the coronavirus crisis, the president himself complained that the media is too focused on a pandemic that has killed more than 225,000 Americans and infected more than 8.6 million. Trump said news coverage of COVID-19, which he has described as an attempt to hurt his campaign, should be “an election law violation.” In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday, Mark Meadows, Trump's chief of staff, sought to defend the administration's response to the virus on a weekend in which the United States saw its highest ever number of new COVID-19 cases in a two-day span.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has taken a step toward revealing his Supreme Court plans. The last-minute nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court has raised allegations from Democrats that Republicans are unfairly gaming the system. It has also led some Democrats to suggest Biden either expand and pack the court with liberal justices if he's elected, or adopt term limits to replace the current lifetime appointments.
France warned its citizens living or travelling in several Muslim-majority countries to take extra security precautions on Tuesday as anger surged over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. In a sign that some countries want to limit the fallout, Saudi Arabia condemned the cartoons but held back from echoing calls by other Muslim states for a boycott of French products or other actions. The row has its roots in a knife attack outside a French school on Oct. 16 in which a man of Chechen origin beheaded Samuel Paty, a teacher who had shown pupils cartoons of Prophet Mohammad in a civics lesson on freedom of speech.
Another top deputy to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is leaving his agency, continuing the exodus of lawyers who earlier this month accused the Republican of crimes including bribery and abuse of office. Darren McCarty, the deputy attorney general over civil litigation, confirmed his resignation Monday but declined to comment further. McCarty's resignation comes as Texas is involved in a landmark antitrust lawsuit brought with other states and the U.S. Department of Justice against Google.
A hunter possibly shot a teenager who died while waiting to watch a sunset with his girlfriend at a Pennsylvania state park, authorities say. Jason Kutt, 18, was sitting at the edge of a lake Saturday evening in Nockamixon State Park when he was fatally shot in the back of his head, according to the Buck's County District Attorney's Office. Kutt's girlfriend told investigators that after Kutt was shot, she saw a man in an orange vest and hunting clothing, police say.
Spain has entered a new state of emergency, imposing local nighttime curfews, and banning some travel between regions. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned the country was facing an "extreme" situation and called it the most serious health crisis in the last century. In tourist hotspots such as Barcelona and the surrounding areas, restaurants and other establishments have to close by 9 p.m.
“We need every able-bodied man, woman, to join Army for Trump's Election security operation...We need you to help us watch them, not only on Election Day, but also during early voting and at the counting boards.” This “Army” of unsanctioned, untrained poll watchers is part of a disturbing torrent of voter suppression and intimidation activities we have seen this election season. Already this year, my organization, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, has filed litigation and undertaken advocacy to stop coordinated efforts to intimidate voters — especially Black voters and other voters of color.
The Lincoln Project's Twitter account boasts a following that even exceeds the Republican party's, and has raked in millions of dollars from its supporters who'd like to see Trump out of the White House. To Ra Kumar, the project's representative at United Talent Agency, it's clear that "they know how to get audiences," he tells Axios. For starters, the group is working with a documentarian to produce a non-fiction film after the election, Axios reports.
Pro-democracy demonstrators in Thailand have expanded their protests internationally, marching to the German Embassy to appeal to Chancellor Angela Merkel's government to investigate whether Thailand's king has exercised political power during his extended stays in Bavaria. The protesters acted while criticizing their own Parliament, which began a special two-day session earlier Monday to address political tensions resulting from the near-daily pro-democracy protests demanding the prime minister's resignation, constitutional changes and reforms to the monarchy. The scrutiny and public criticism of the monarchy displayed by some of the protesters is unprecedented in a country where the royal institution has been considered sacrosanct.
A heavy book that the White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, presented to Lesley Stahl as President Donald Trump's healthcare plan during a "60 Minutes" interview was largely filled with existing legislation, the show said. Stahl said in a clip — and "60 Minutes" suggested in a tweet on Sunday — the book had a series of executive orders and congressional initiatives "but no comprehensive health plan." The Washington Examiner reported last week that a copy of the book it obtained did contain some details about a healthcare plan but that much of it was 13 executive orders and 11 pieces of healthcare legislation enacted during Trump's presidency.
Democratic Senate nominee Jaime Harrison has spent millions upon millions of dollars in the last several months attacking his Republican opponent, Senator Lindsey Graham, for not being transparent with South Carolinians about where he stands on the key political issues of the day, from immigration reform and racial justice to his support more broadly for Donald Trump. Mr Harrison and Democrats across the country have assailed Mr Graham for “flip-flopping” on his declaration in 2016 — which he re-affirmed again in a now-infamous clip from the winter of 2018 — that he would not seat a Supreme Court nominee during the 2020 presidential election season.
Keith Raniere, a self-improvement guru whose organization NXIVM attracted millionaires and actresses among its adherents, faces sentencing Tuesday on convictions that he turned some female followers into sex slaves branded with his initials. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis will announce an almost-certain lengthy prison term Tuesday for Raniere after hearing victims speak. The court proceeding in Brooklyn culminates several years of revelations about NXIVM, which charged thousands of dollars for invitation-only self improvement courses at its headquarters near Albany, New York, and had branches in Mexico and Canada.
Michigan police chiefs say that may not be able to enforce a ban on carrying guns at polling places, local news channel WKAR reported. The ban was imposed in October by Michigan secretary of state Jocelyn Benson in response to concerns of voter intimidation on Election Day. Members of a far-right so-called militia group were recently charged with plotting to kidnap and assassinate Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Biden's campaign and other fundraising vehicles supporting his campaign have pulled in roughly $3 million from commercial banks, compared with just over $1.4 million for Trump, CRP data shows. By comparison, in 2012, the first presidential election following the 2009 financial crisis, Republican candidate Mitt Romney pulled in nearly $5.5 million from commercial banks and their workers, compared with Democratic President Barack Obama's nearly $2 million. Wall Street banks and their workers were the top five contributors to Romney, while no financial firms were among Obama's top contributors, according to the CRP data.
Dozens of missing children in Ohio are now safe, thanks to the U.S. Marshals Service and several other state law enforcement agencies in what officials say is the largest anti-human trafficking effort in state history. Deputies helped find 45 missing children as part of the multi-agency operation Autumn Hope, officials announced Monday. The statewide effort also led to 179 arrests this month.
Fox News has been planning its election night coverage for weeks, prepping staff and on-air talent for the biggest news night of the year. “Everyone is in a panic about election night,” said one current Fox News staffer. On Sunday, The New York Times reported that top Fox News executives and talent will quarantine and get tested after flying on a network-chartered flight from Nashville to New York—following Thursday night's presidential debate—with a staffer who later tested positive for the coronavirus.
An airstrike on a rebel training camp in northwestern Syria on Monday killed more than 50 Turkish-backed fighters and wounded nearly as many, in one of the heaviest blows to the opposition's strongest groups, a spokesman and a war monitor said. The opposition blamed Russia for the daytime strike and vowed to retaliate for the attack on Faylaq al-Sham. Russia and Turkey, although they support opposite sides in Syria's conflict, have worked together to maintain a cease-fire in the last enclave of Syria's rebels, centered on the province of Idlib.
With control of the House hardly contested, Pelosi is working to fortify Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and win extra House seats in case Congress is called on to resolve any Electoral College dispute with President Donald Trump. Pelosi said she feels so confident Democrats will keep the House this election, she's already preparing to win the next one in 2022. This year, I'm trying to win it two years in advance — by being so substantial in this election that as soon as we start into the next year, people will see our strength,” Pelosi told The Associated Press in an interview.
Officials say the skull was discovered in 2019 in the Gobey area of Morgan County, roughly 50 miles northwest of Knoxville after someone tipped them off to its location. No other remains were found, according to the Facebook post. The Morgan County Sheriff's Office took the skull to compare it with DNA samples from relatives of Junior Willie McCann, officials say.
The handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was a hot topic at the final presidential debate. Reich did quote President Donald Trump verbatim, but the president's words in a broader context may change their meaning. According to USA TODAY's transcript of the Oct. 22 debate, moderator Kristen Welker of NBC News asked the same first question to both Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden: How would you lead the country out of crisis?
That is going to produce results coming in at very different times — perhaps days or even weeks after Election Day. In some places, election officials can begin processing ballots weeks before Election Day. That means workers can start verifying voter information while also removing ballots from their envelopes to physically get them ready for tabulation.
Donald Trump Jr has lashed out at trangender woman Jessica Yaniv on twitter, targeting her over reports that she has lodged a human rights complaint against a beauty pageant. The president's son made the seemingly derogatory remark in response to a shared article reporting that Ms Yaniv had filed a human rights complaint against a canadian beauty pageant for preventing her from participating. “It has nothing to do with her being Trans,” Mr Trump Jr said, a comment which many users interpreted as the president's son making a negative remark against Ms Yaniv's appearance.
The story of India's first "saviour sibling" has made national headlines. It has also raised questions about the ethics of using technology to create a child only to save or cure a sibling in a country with poor regulatory systems. Kavya Solanki was born in October 2018 and in March, when she was 18 months old, her bone marrow was extracted and transplanted into Abhijit, her seven-year-old brother.
McDonald's franchisees' optimism about the future of the business is higher than it has been in years, according to Kalinowski Equity Research's quarterly survey. McDonald's Travis Scott and J Balvin meals, as well as the success of spicy chicken nuggets, drove sales at McDonald's during the pandemic. The fast-food giant has also profited from sit-down restaurants' struggles, as many independent restaurants shutter for good.

As originally described in 2017, Foxconn was to build a Generation 10.5 facility that would manufacture large LCD screens. The project was to be an investment of up to $10 billion that would deliver up to 13,000 jobs.
“Many are longtime Republicans wrestling with what they see as a choice between two lousy candidates.”
“Some undecideds turn out to be people who’ve long felt alienated from the two big political parties.”
“They’re not following the 24-hour news cycle. The election and politics are just not a high priority.”
“One common trait: at this stage of the game, the undecided voter doesn’t fit into an easy political profile.”
“More realistically...these voters may not be motivated to vote at all in the 2020 election.”
