Who do Americans blame for lack of second stimulus deal? Here’s what a new poll shows

Hopes for another coronavirus relief package before the election were squashed this week when the Senate adjourned until Nov. 9 — and a new poll found who Americans blame for the lack of an agreement. Democrats, Republicans and the White House have been unable to reach a deal on a second stimulus package for months. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have come closer to reaching a compromise on a bill worth up to $2 trillion, CBS News reports, but they've remained at odds over key aspects of the package.

Fact check: Biden did tell a Detroit worker 'I'm not working for you' during gun rights argument

A viral social media post claims Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden isn't the public servant he's made out to be. The meme, shared on Facebook, depicts an encounter between Joe Biden and a person wearing a helmet who is turned away from the camera. There's a speech bubble over Biden's head which reads “I don't work for you!” as Biden points at the person, insinuating he said that to the person.

Trump rushes struggling GOP senator at rally: 'You got one minute, they don't want to hear this'

President Donald Trump brought a series of guests on stage with him during a campaign rally in Arizona on Wednesday, but raised eyebrows with his treatment of the only local Republican senator Martha McSally. Mr Trump initially said Ms McSally â “ who is also fighting for re-election next week â “ was â greatâ and â respected by everybodyâ . But the presidentâ s own tone was less than respectful, as he ordered the senator up onto the stage and told her she had â one minuteâ to speak.

A mutated coronavirus strain causes most new COVID-19 infections in Europe and was spread within the continent by tourists, scientists say

Most new COVID-19 cases in Europe come from a mutated variant of the coronavirus spread from Spain by tourists, scientists said in a report Thursday. The coronavirus variant was first identified in northeastern Spain in June and was carried abroad by tourists and other travelers, the scientists said. There isn't enough data to suggest this variant, known as 20A.EU1, is more deadly, the team from the University of Basel, ETH Zürich in Basel, and SeqCOVID in Spain said.

Jerry Falwell Jr. is suing Liberty University after his forced resignation over sex scandal

Former Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. filed a state lawsuit Wednesday against the evangelical school founded by his father, claiming he was wrongly ousted from his leadership post. In a complaint in state court in Lynchburg, Virginia, Falwell's lawyers alleged that Liberty defamed Falwell and breached the former president's contract. "Mr. Falwell has suffered damage to his reputation, damage to his profession, humiliation, and anguish; lost business opportunities; and suffered other pecuniary damage," according to the plaintiff's complaint.

Typhoon, landslides leave 35 dead, dozens missing in Vietnam

A typhoon that officials said was the most powerful to hit Vietnam in 20 years blew away from the country on Thursday after setting off landslides, sinking boats and knocking out power to at least 1.7 million people. The immediate focus for rescuers was on three villages in the country's central region where landslides killed at least 19 people and are suspected of burying more than 40 others in thick mud and debris. Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung traveled to the site of one landslide where soldiers were working to clear debris with bulldozers and he ordered officers to urgently send more troops to help with the efforts.

Trump wants the Supreme Court to help him win the election. It's unlikely — but still possible

Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Donald Trump Photo illustration by Salon/Getty Images President Trump has repeatedly tried to cast doubt on the results of the presidential election and signaled that he hopes the Supreme Court's conservative majority can deliver him a win — but election law experts say that scenario is increasingly implausible because Trump has fallen so far behind in the polls. "It is unlikely the Supreme Court will decide the 2020 elections because it would have to be so close in a state pivotal to the Electoral College that litigating could make a difference," Rick Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California Irvine School of Law, told Salon.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg should have retired before 2016 so president Donald Trump would never have had the opportunity to fill her vacated seat when she died, Bill Maher has said. The liberal-leaning 'Real Time' talk show host also suggested Democrats failed to properly plan for the possibility that Ginsburg, known as RBG, might die while serving on the bench. Mr Obama had a private lunch with RBG and is understood to have brought up her retirement, pointing out Democrats might lose the Senate, meaning he could lose the chance to appoint a justice.

Global economic rebound at risk from rising coronavirus cases: Reuters poll

There is a high risk the resurgence in coronavirus cases halts the global economic recovery by year-end, according to Reuters polls of around 500 economists, a majority of whom expected the rebound next year to be weaker than previously thought. The Oct. 6-27 Reuters polls of economists across Asia, Europe and the Americas covering 46 economies showed scant sign of activity recovering to pre-COVID-19 levels anytime soon. "Even before the renewed lockdowns there was already a broad acceptance that many countries will see a permanently lower level of GDP than they would have done in the absence of the pandemic," noted Janet Henry, global chief economist at HSBC.

In Florida's Old South, a new political battleground emerges

But when the Democratic gubernatorial candidate won the county two years ago, it energized Democrats and community activists aspiring to turn Jacksonville into another hub in the new, more Democratic South. The race between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden will test that Democratic progress. Biden is counting on the county's sizable African American vote to do what no Democratic presidential candidate has done since Jimmy Carter: beat a Republican in Duval County and open another northern front in the contest for Florida's 29 electoral votes.

In the no-toss-up map, Clinton held a slim 66-point lead (up from eight the day before) in the race to the 270 votes needed to secure the presidency in America. In the battleground/toss-up states according to RCP (Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida), Clinton had a 1.8-point lead but was actually losing two of them â ” Ohio and Florida.

Apparently that near-total fealty hasn't been enough for Graham to earn a little loyalty in return. The Trumpiest corners of the conservative ecosphere have made it plain in recent weeks that they're ready to abandon Graham — who is locked in a tight re-election race with Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison — even if it means losing his Senate seat.

The Duchess of Sussex's privacy battle against the Mail on Sunday has been delayed until next autumn for "confidential” reasons, despite her father arguing that he “could be dead tomorrow”. The Duchess is suing the owner of the newspaper for publishing extracts from a "private and confidential" letter she sent her father Thomas Markle in 2018, claiming it was a breach of her privacy and copyright. Mr Markle was expected to give evidence in the trial, scheduled for January, but a High Court judge has granted an application by the Duchess's lawyers to adjourn the hearing until "much later next year".

It was after 8 p.m. Tuesday when Hector Martinez came straight from work to an early-voting site near his home, flicked off his headlights and headed inside to cast a ballot. “This was much easier,” Martinez, 47, said Tuesday, after voting at the Bayland Park Community Center in southwest Houston. Martinez, who voted for former Vice President Joe Biden in the presidential race, is among more than 1.2 million voters who've already cast ballots in Harris County, which includes Houston, as of Wednesday evening, nearly surpassing the fast-growing county's total turnout from 2016.

The White House is reportedly still pushing for a herd immunity police to address the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the denials, The Daily Beast reported. Public health officials have repeatedly said the approach would cost thousands of unnecessary infections and deaths. Herd immunity is when a population has enough people who are immune to a virus it slows the spread of transmission.

The Electoral College is comprised of 538 delegates: People who cast the votes that formally elect the president. It's a system that tends to give smaller states a larger voice in the process of electing the president, and one that Clinton has publicly opposed in the past.

Rudy Vents to Trump That Bill Barr Is Screwing Up His Hunter Play

Weeks after Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani first pushed the Hunter Biden files and a collection of sordid dirt to the New York Post in a last-ditch effort to drag his client across the 2020 finish line, both he and the president, as well as several of Trump's political lieutenants, have grown frustrated at the lack of impact it's had. In the aftermath of the New York Post reporting earlier this month—for which Trump had personally greenlighted Giuliani's decision to act as the paper's source—the former New York City mayor has spoken with President Trump both about the Hunter Biden materials and what could be done about them from a law enforcement perspective, according to a White House official and a source close to Giuliani.

    • “One common trait: at this stage of the game, the undecided voter doesn’t fit into an easy political profile.”

    • “More realistically...these voters may not be motivated to vote at all in the 2020 election.”
