Some knew it as the “sad side” of Ellis Island. A century ago, the hospital complex at the historic Ellis Island immigration inspection station was the place where approximately one out of every 10 arrivals who were too sick to be allowed into the country were sent to recover, or to die. The 29-building medical complex — in its day the largest public health institution in the United States — was itself left to die when the immigration station closed in 1954.

Once bitter foes, President Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz have developed nothing short of a political bromance. Trump headlined his “Make America Great Again” rally in front of more than 17,000 supporters at the Toyota Center in Houston on the first day of early voting in Texas for the 2018 midterms. “You know, we had our little difficulties,” Trump said about his relationship with Cruz.

With the 2018 midterm elections just over two weeks away, the casual reader may be coming across some strange terms in the American political lexicon. For anyone confused by reports on the battle between Democrats and Republicans to control Congress, The Independent has compiled a handy list of some common terms. Battleground State: A state is considered a battleground state if its electorate is split relatively evenly between Republicans and Democrats, making state-wide races especially competitive and hard to predict.

In a move that would have seemed unthinkable two years ago, President Trump offered a full embrace, literally and figuratively, of Ted Cruz in a massive rally here Monday night, imploring a crowd of tens of thousands of supporters to turn out for his former political rival in a closely watched Senate race in Texas. In what is likely to be a highly scrutinized endorsement of the midterm elections, Trump and Cruz shared the stage at the top of an hour-long rally here, sharing a brief man-hug and a few arm squeezes before an estimated crowd of 18,000 in the heart of downtown Houston. It was the most public sign yet that Trump and Cruz, whose bitter battle for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination was one of the ugliest campaigns in recent memory, have put the past behind them — for now, anyway.
WASHINGTON ― Some of the most prominent U.S. foreign policy figures urging a tough response to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi are earning thousands of dollars each month from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia’s closest partner and a vocal defender of the Saudi narrative about how he died. It’s a stunning situation that underscores how Middle East powers aligned with the Saudis and the U.S. are doing damage control amid the scandal — sustaining their relationship with the biggest player in the Arab world while trying to keep Western partners happy so their own human rights records and behavior don’t come under similar worldwide scrutiny. Publicly, countries like the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan have come out in support of the Saudis in multiple statements.
