Attacks against mosques, shrines and followers of Sufi sheikhs in Sri Lanka more than a decade ago point to early warning signs of fundamentalism taking root among a sliver of the country's Muslims. The Easter attacks in Sri Lanka that killed more than 350 people in churches and hotels showed how the warnings went largely unheeded. It also exposed how a legacy of civil war, marginalization, political disarray and security lapses cultivated fertile ground for the militants to carry out their attacks.
PIJIJIAPAN, Mexico – Central American migrants hoping to reach the U.S. are finding a much tougher trek than those in previous caravans, meeting unwelcoming townsfolk and a surprise raid by Mexican police and immigration agents who detained hundreds in Mexico's south. While their compatriots were been taken into custody Monday, hundreds of other migrants scrambled away into the brush along the highway in Chiapas state to elude authorities. Many had already learned they would not be received in towns with the same hospitality that greeted previous caravans, and now they know they won't be safe walking along the rural highway either.
Deutsche Bank has begun to provide documents on financing for some of President Donald Trump's projects to New York State authorities, a source familiar with the matter told AFP on Wednesday. In mid-March, New York Attorney General Letitia James subpoenaed the German bank, demanding records related to loans and lines of credit granted to the Trump Organization. The money was intended to finance projects such as Trump hotels in Washington, DC, Miami and Chicago, another source told AFP last month on the condition of anonymity.
Larry Hopkins, 69, whose group of self-styled citizen border cops drew condemnation from civil liberties advocates, suffered broken ribs in the beating by fellow inmates on Tuesday at the Dona Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, according to his attorney, Kelly O'Connell. Hopkins was arrested on Saturday by the FBI on an outstanding warrant accusing him of being a felon in illegal possession of firearms, a charge dating back to a 2017 search of his home. The detention facility, about 200 miles south of Albuquerque, confirmed that Hopkins was "the alleged victim" of a Tuesday night attack and said the incident was under investigation.
Senator Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) said Monday that as president she would unilaterally tighten gun control laws through executive action if Congress did not pass legislation to do so within her first 100 days in office. Harris explained during CNN's town hall event in New Hampshire that she would use her executive authority to require that anyone who sells more than five guns per year conduct a background check on all sales, effectively eliminating their status as a “private seller” in a move that would be vulnerable to legal challenge. “Upon being elected, I will give the United States Congress 100 days to get their act together and have the courage to pass reasonable gun safety laws, and if they fail to do it, then I will take executive action,” Harris told the crowd.
On Monday, Sony announced the pricing of the flagship Master Series televisions as well as that of its new LCD and OLED models originally revealed at CES earlier this year. Back in January at this year's annual International Consumer Electronics Show, Sony unveiled its latest flagship TVs, the Master Series, as well as a slew of lower-tier OLED and HDR models; this week the pricing was revealed. While the smaller three televisions of the Master segment, the A9G TVs, measure in at 65 , 55 , and 77 and feature 4K OLED displays with over eight million pixels, the two larger models -- the Z9G TVs -- are 8K HDR televisions with 33 million pixels.
Hasan Minhaj has not targeted his top Presidential contender among the candidates yet. And while he knows who he'd want to interview on his Netflix show, there is just one tiny problem – the top choice is among the few people who have not jumped into the presidential race. It will be interesting to see how everything shapes up, things are changing so fast,“ the comedian told TIME at the 2019 TIME 100 gala Tuesday.

Major Chinese automaker Geely has launched a sub-brand it's calling Geometry. The electric Geometry A is the first production model, and Geely says it's got the Tesla Model 3 in its sights. Tesla might be struggling with bringing the long-promised $35,000 version of the Model 3 to market, but Chinese automaker Geely is suffering from no such problems with the Geometry A, the first production car from what is set to be a wider EV sub-brand.
Easter Day bomb blasts at three Sri Lankan churches and four hotels killed 359 people and wounded hundreds more, following a lull in major attacks since the end of the civil war 10 years ago. The explosions, some of which officials said were suicide bomb attacks, led to an immediate clampdown, with the government declaring a curfew and blocking access to most major social media and messaging sites. The three hotels hit in the initial attacks were the Shangri-La Colombo, Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo and the Cinnamon Grand Colombo.
The investigation was tied to the "#FeelingCute" challenge, the department said last week. The Houston Chronicle — which reported earlier this month that officers were apparently linked to posts with captions such as "Feeling cute, might just gas some inmates today, IDK" — reported on Tuesday that four officers have been fired and two resigned because of the investigation. Texas Department of Criminal Justice statements to the Chronicle and the Associated Press did not provide details on the social media content involved in the firings.
President Donald Trump said Wednesday the US is sending armed soldiers to the southern border after Mexican soldiers recently "pulled guns" on US troops, escalating his war of words with Mexico on immigration. Trump was apparently referring to an April 13 incident in which Mexican troops reportedly questioned and pointed their weapons at two US troops conducting surveillance on the border. "Mexico's Soldiers recently pulled guns on our National Guard Soldiers, probably as a diversionary tactic for drug smugglers on the Border.
“It's my God-given right to be here,” said one balaclava-clad militia member who gave his name only as Viper. Chafing at the hostile reactions to the militia's actions, he said that he was an Army veteran and that he expected his group, if pushed out, to set up camp in another location along the border. “The guys in Washington say one thing about not wanting us on the ground, but no one from the Border Patrol here has ever told me they don't want our help,” he said, squinting under the midday sun.
A newly released sketch of a man suspected of killing two Indiana teenagers in 2017 "more accurately represents" the man believed to be their killer than a sketch released months after the girls were slain, state police said Wednesday. The statement from Indiana State Police sought to clarify information about the two sketches on behalf of the multi-agency task force that's investigating the February 2017 killings of 14-year-old Liberty German and 13-year-old Abigail Williams. Master Trooper Taylor Bryant told The Indianapolis Star on Monday that he drew the sketch that was released this week just three days after the girls' bodies were found in a wooded area where they had been hiking near their northern Indiana hometown of Delphi.
Attorney Jeff Anderson said an audit of the files by an expert hired by the Boy Scouts of America revealed 7,819 sexual predators and 12,254 victims.
PG&E Corp can pay employees up to $350 million in bonuses this year to spur them to help meet the bankrupt California power provider's safety goals to prevent wildfires, a judge said on Tuesday. PG&E's management has said the company needs to implement the bonus plan to carry out tasks such as clearing trees and branches around power lines to avert contact that triggers wildfires. While the maximum cost of the plan is $350 million, PG&E has said it expects the likely cost will be around $235 million.
As previous leaks revealed, the Pixel 3a is a blast from the past, with a design more reminiscent of the phones that came before the iPhone X than the phones that have made their debut over the last 12 to 18 months. No notches, no triple-lens camera, no in-display fingerprint sensor — the Pixel 3a forgoes all of the modern design advances that the industry has adopted in favor of a classic design that basically mirrors that of the Pixel 3. The design alone won't entice any smartphone fanatics that want to owe the latest, greatest device (providing it isn't so flawed that it has to be delayed indefinitely).
On Tuesday, the Islamic State (also known as IS or ISIS) confirmed what the world already suspected when it claimed responsibility for Sunday's devastating blasts across Sri Lanka, which killed over 300 and injured over 500. A communique, released shortly after an initial report of responsibility by ISIS news agency 'Amaq, was heavy in detail, identifying seven attackers and which locations each of them struck across churches, hotels, and housing in Sri Lanka's Batticaloa, Colombo, Dematagoda, and Negombo areas. 'Amaq released a video minutes afterward of the attackers pledging allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi together, led by suspected attack “mastermind” Moulvi Zahran Hashim. The attacks—and ISIS' response—provide a troubling demonstration of how ISIS' global network is adapting to its losses in Iraq and Syria, how its media machine thrives amid those setbacks, and how the group is willing to adjust its own playbook to justify an attack.
Three young men in Alabama are receiving praise after their simple act of kindness went viral. Jamario Howard was with his friends JaMychol Baker and Tae Knight, waiting for their food at Brad's Bar-B-Que in Oxford, Alabama, when he noticed a woman sitting alone, according to a now-viral Facebook post. After thinking about it for a minute, Howard walked over and asked to sit with her.
Iran's foreign minister has offered a prisoner exchange of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and an Iranian woman held in Australia on “phony charges”. Mohammed Javad Zarif, speaking at an event held by the Asia Society in New York on Wednesday, said the proposal was made to the US six months ago but he was now making it public. Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 40, a British-Iranian who has been held in prison in Tehran on spying charges since 2016, was last month granted diplomatic protection by the UK government in an attempt to secure her release, with little effect.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday he expected "bumpy" talks ahead with North Korea but that he still hoped to reach a potentially landmark denuclearization deal. US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un cut short a summit in February in Hanoi, with Pyongyang later blaming Pompeo for pushing a hard line and calling for his exclusion from future negotiations. In an interview with CBS News, Pompeo said the Hanoi summit had more "nuance" than publicly reported, with the two sides sharing their positions.
House Democrats have scheduled the first ever hearing for Medicare for All legislation for next week, as the proposal is becoming a litmus test for Democratic 2020 presidential candidates. The “Medicare for All Act” will be considered by the House Rules Committee next Tuesday and by the House Budget Committee at a later date. However, the two primary health care committees, Ways and Means as well as Energy and Commerce, have so far been reluctant to consider the proposal.
A custody hearing involving the brother of a missing suburban Chicago boy and their parents has been continued. JoAnn Cunningham and Andrew Freund Sr., the parents of missing 5-year-old Andrew "AJ" Freund, appeared Tuesday in McHenry County Circuit Court. Cunningham's attorney, George Kililis, said Tuesday that the state made numerous allegations in its petition that "requires a lot of work for us." He wouldn't comment further.
