Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who sits on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, said she is “surprised” by federal prosecutors' reactions to testimony given before the panel this week by Cassidy Hutchinson, who previously served as an aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. During an appearance on NBC's “Meet the Press” that was aired on Sunday, host Chuck Todd asked Lofgren to react to a story published last week in The New York Times that reported federal prosecutors working on the Justice Department's Jan. 6 investigation felt blindsided after watching Hutchinson's testimony and were as surprised by her remarks as those watching it.
John Bolton, former United Nations ambassador and White House national security advisor, spoke exclusively to CBS News' Catherine Herridge about the Jan. 6 hearings, Rep. Liz Cheney's future and whether former President Donald Trump will run again in 2024.
Former President Donald Trump could announce a 2024 bid ahead of schedule. Trump thinks the announcement could distract from the January 6 hearings, the NYT reported. President Donald Trump could be planning to make an unusually early announcement of his plans to run for president, but not all Republicans are convinced it would be the right move for the party.

David Van Patten. Van Patten reportedly made contact with Chan while the latter was applying for a new position within the Vancouver Police Department in early 2016.
The latest in a litany of horrors in Ukraine came this week as Russian firepower rained down on civilians in a busy shopping mall far from the front lines of a war in its fifth month. While much of the attritional war in Ukraine's east is hidden from sight, the brutality of Russian missile strikes on a mall in the central city of Kremenchuk and on residential buildings in the capital, Kyiv, unfolded in full view of the world and especially of Western leaders gathered for a trio of summits in Europe. Were the attacks a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin as the West sought to arm Ukraine with more effective weapons to bolster its resistance, and to set Ukraine on the path to joining the European Union?

On May 5, a Class 8 Waymo Via truck operating in autonomous mode with a human safety operator behind the wheel was hauling a trailer northbound on Interstate 45 toward Dallas, Texas. At 3:11 p.m., just outside Ennis, the modified Peterbilt was traveling in the far right lane when a passing truck and trailer combo entered its lane. The driver of the Waymo Via truck told police that the other semi truck continued to maneuver into the lane, forcing Waymo's truck and trailer off the roadway.
Jeff Bezos has questioned Joe Biden's demand for lower gas prices. A Chinese official praised Biden for realizing that "capitalism is all about exploitation." A 28-year-old Texas man accused of orchestrating the horrific smuggling operation that killed 53 migrants this week frantically texted the driver when the truck went off the radar and later admitted to a confidential informant he had no idea the air conditioning had failed in the sweltering big-rig, the feds say. Christian Martinez, 28, was arrested Tuesday on a trafficking charge involving death that could land him life in prison or the death penalty after migrants reportedly battled debilitating temperatures up to 150 degrees inside the truck. Martinez's string of texts with the semi-truck's alleged driver, 45-year-old Homero Zamorano Jr., were detailed in a criminal complaint obtained by The Daily Beast on Friday.

The election of Donald Trump to the presidency was an asteroid strike that profoundly altered America's political and cultural landscape. Six years ago, Trump offered a devil's bargain to evangelical Christians: If they gave a thrice-married, biblically illiterate New York City libertine their vote, he'd deliver Supreme Court justices who'd overturn Roe and promote a conservative Christian agenda. Trump delivered, with help from Mitch McConnell and Democrats who stayed home in 2016 or voted for Jill Stein because of their distaste for Hillary Clinton.

The Indiana State Legislature's repeal of gun permit requirements went into effect Friday. The repeal makes it harder to screen for dangerous individuals with weapons, police say. The law's exceptions include individuals with felonies or restraining orders against them.

In a letter sent Wednesday, Gonzales' lawyers, Thea Posel and Raoul Schonemann, asked Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to grant a 30-day reprieve so the inmate can be considered a living donor “to someone who is in urgent need of a kidney transplant.”
I've been lifting weights consistently for five years, it makes me feel empowered and, rather than seeing exercise as punishment, I'm excited to go to the gym. I've learned valuable lessons along the way which would have helped me when I started, including that exercise alone won't make you lose a significant amount of fat, and there's no such thing as "toning." Exercise is overrated for fat loss A post shared by Rachel Hosie (@rachel_hosie) Despite working out more than I ever had done, I didn't lose weight for nearly two years into my fitness journey.

Days after the Secret Service pushed back on the stunning testimony that former President Donald Trump violently freaked out during a Jan. 6 presidential SUV ride, CNN reported on Friday that accounts of Trump lunging at his Secret Service agents have spread around the agency for the past year. According to two Secret Service sources, stories similar to ex-Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson's account—which she testified under oath was told to her by former Trump staffer and current Secret Service official Tony Ornato—circulated among agents in the months following the incident. One source, for instance, relayed that Trump profanely demanded to be driven to the Capitol and even “lunged forward” at one point.
Until yesterday, it was hard to imagine how Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas could have made the Court's term any worse. Thomas is considered the ideological godfather of an emboldened, far-right majority on the Court that in the past week alone weakened Miranda rights for people detained by cops, removed the Environmental Protection Agency's power to actually protect the environment and obliterated the national right to an abortion for women. In that last instance, Thomas didn't write the majority opinion but he did pen an inflammatory concurrence inviting challenges to the rights to same-sex marriage and contraception, but notably not interracial marriage, something that's obviously very dear to his heart.
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Saturday Ukraine had tried to strike military facilities on Belarusian territory three days ago, but all its missiles had been intercepted, the state-run Belta news agency reported. Lukashenko said there were no troops from Belarus fighting in what Moscow calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine.
“Left unchecked, if artificial intelligence reaches cognition … it will be fueled by some of the most inhumane impulses of humanity.”
“Now is the time to stop and think — before our technology outstrips us once again.”
“I don't want to talk about sentient robots, because at all ends of the spectrum there are humans harming other humans.”
“Minds can take different forms … We should avoid reducing questions about AIs to ‘Can AIs think and feel like us?’”
“To identify sentience, or consciousness, or even intelligence, we’re going to have to work out what they are.”
