Vigilantes in Haiti strike back at gangsters with brutal street justice

Vigilantes have killed at least 164 people since the movement dubbed “bwa kale” began in April, according to the United Nations. The name means “peeled wood” in Haitian Creole and insinuates male dominance and power in street slang. If you're not from here, we're going to kill you,” said Leo, a community leader who granted the AP access to the Turgeau neighborhood so that journalists could see how the neighborhood is responding to the gangs estimated to control 80% of Port-au-Prince.

Chuck Todd leaving NBC political panel show 'Meet the Press' and being replaced by Kristen Welker

Chuck Todd said on Sunday that he'll be leaving “Meet the Press” after a tumultuous near-decade of moderating the NBC political panel show, to be replaced in the coming months by Kristen Welker. Todd, 51, told viewers that “I've watched too many friends and family let work consume them before it was too late” and that he'd promised his family he wouldn't do that. Todd has often been an online punching bag for critics, including Donald Trump, during a polarized time, and there were rumors that his time at the show would be short when its executive producer was reassigned at the end of last summer, but NBC gave no indication this was anything other than Todd's decision.

Analysis-Saudi Arabia's 'icing on the cake' oil cut could feed US producers

Saudi Arabia has crafted a complex OPEC+ deal with a view to punishing investors that have bet on falling oil prices but could inadvertently lend long-term support to the rival U.S. energy industry, OPEC+ insiders and market watchers said. On Sunday, Saudi Arabia pledged to cut its oil output by 1 million barrels per day (bpd), or 10%, in July on top of existing output cuts from OPEC and its allies. With the new Saudi reduction, the group has agreed to take some 4.6 million bpd off the market in July, equivalent to 4.6% of global demand of 100 million bpd.

Man accidentally hits bird nest, then drives hundreds of miles with last egg in hand

A Texas man drove for hours with one hand on the steering wheel and the other clutching an egg, on a mission to save a life. He was working a job at a property in West Texas, near Odessa, when he accidentally ran over a bird's nest, destroying all but one egg, the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center said in a May 31 Facebook post. Determined to salvage what he could, he grabbed the egg and took it home with him to Lufkin — roughly 500 miles east — delicately holding it, keeping it warm during the long journey, the center said.

China seeks dialogue, says clash with US would be 'unbearable disaster'

Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu told Asia's top security summit on Sunday that conflict with the United States would be an "unbearable disaster" but that his country sought dialogue over confrontation. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Li said the world was big enough for China and the U.S. to grow together - remarks made days after he refused to meet his U.S. counterpart for direct talks. "China and the U.S. have different systems and are different in many other ways," he said in a speech that marked his first significant international address since he was named China's Minister of National Defence in March.

Nepal urged to tighten climbing rules to cut Everest deaths

Weak climbers being led up Mount Everest by expedition operators with insufficient experience are causing problems, a veteran mountain guide said on Sunday, after one of the deadliest climbing seasons in years on the world's highest mountain. At least 12 climbers died and five are missing and feared dead on the 8,849 metre (29,032 foot) Mount Everest during this year's main climbing season that has just ended, the deadliest since an earthquake triggered an avalanche that killed 18 people in 2015. "Weakest clients with less experienced operators is part of the problem,” Guy Cotter, 69, a noted guide from the New Zealand who has climbed Everest five times, said in the Nepali capital, Kathmandu.

During his Monday appearance on The View, GOP presidential hopeful Tim Scott blasted the hosts' recent “dangerous” and “offensive” comments about Black Republicans like himself. The impact of his forceful rebuttal, however, was somewhat blunted by the fact that co-host Joy Behar—who claimed last month that Scott doesn't “get” systemic racism, wasn't actually on the broadcast. Hundreds of thousands march in Poland anti-government protests to show support for democracy

Hundreds of thousands of people marched in an anti-government protest in Poland's capital on Sunday, with citizens traveling from across the country to voice their anger at officials who they say have eroded democratic norms and created fears that the nation is following Hungary and Turkey down the path to autocracy. Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who belongs to the opposition party that led the march, estimated that 500,000 people took part. Large crowds also gathered in Krakow and other cities across the nation of 38 million people, showing frustration with a government that critics accuse of violating the constitution and eroding fundamental rights in Poland.
