President Biden forgives nearly $4 billion in student debt — what’s next?

President Joe Biden wiped $3.9 billion from the student loan records Tuesday. More than 200,000 former students, who still owe on a federal student loan from their time at ITT Technical Institute will see their loan balances cleared, whether they've applied for forgiveness or not. This brings the total amount of loan discharges under Biden to nearly $32 billion and leaves many wondering what more could be forgiven or at least if payments will remain on pause.

Neither American nor the manufacturer Boom Supersonic would provide financial details Tuesday, including the amount of American's deposit. A Firefighter Accused Of Photographing Kobe Bryant’s Body Walked Out Of The Courtroom Multiple Times After Begging Vanessa Bryant’s Lawyer To “Stop Describing” The “Horrifying” Crash Scene

Sheriff's deputies and firefighters accused of circulating photographs of Kobe Bryant's body at the scene of his death have begun testifying in court. The NBA legend's widow, Vanessa Bryant, sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in September 2020 over allegations that employees took and shared cellphone images of the crash site where her husband and their 13-year-old daughter, Gianna Bryant, died on Jan. 26, 2020. Kobe and Gianna were among the nine people killed in a fatal helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

Trump was so distracted by grievances that he never got round to returning secret documents the FBI found at Mar-a-Lago: NYT

Donald Trump left office in such disarray he omitted to return documents, per the NYT. The documents remained in his possession until the FBI took them in a raid last week. Former President Donald Trump omitted to return sensitive documents to the US government when he left office because he was so obsessed with settling personal grudges, The New York Times reported.

Cottonmouth turf war turns comical when a raccoon wades into middle of NC marsh fight

A snake researcher documenting a venomous cottonmouth turf war in North Carolina saw the tense fight turn goofy when a self-absorbed raccoon wandered into the water. Video posted on Facebook by herpetologist Frederick Boyce shows at least five adult cottonmouths (each 30 to 35 inches long) were in the water when the raccoon made the clearly unnecessary decision to join them. It is seen coming within a few feet of two entangled cottonmouths before exiting the mud without so much as a scratch.

Why the Eastern Kentucky flood was no natural disaster. Let's call it what it is

And while this contributor will address that narrative below, there is another narrative that needs clarifying: The flood of July 28, 2022 was not a natural disaster. To imply this flood, along with so many other weather-borne catastrophes plaguing our world, is a natural disaster is to say three things: We don't know why it happened, we don't know how it happened and we don't know how to prevent the next one. But we do know the answers to these questions. We've known them for some time.

Former GOP rep finds it 'so funny' watching his former colleagues 'twist into pretzels' trying to defend Trump

Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman from Illinois, appeared Sunday on The Mehdi Hasan Show, where he addressed how some congressional Republicans are coming to the defense of former President Donald Trump. Following a search at Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Fla., it has been reported that Trump had taken highly classified documents when he left the White House, which is illegal, even for a former president. Despite the fact that it was a legally executed search warrant, many members of the GOP have rushed to Trump's defense and denigrated the FBI.

An Oval Office incident from 2019 perfectly illustrates Trump's approach to state secrets, say ex intel officials

A former senior intelligence official with firsthand knowledge told NBC News that Trump did indeed tweet a highly classified image taken by a secret spy satellite, as many experts suspected at the time. And in doing so, the official and others said, Trump gave U.S. adversaries keen insights into the U.S. capabilities to spy from above. The president tweeted a picture of an Iranian missile launch site that showed a failed ICBM test launch that everybody acknowledged was a highly classified picture taken from space,” former national security adviser John Bolton, who was in Poland when it happened, told NBC News Monday.

China unexpectedly cuts 2 key rates, withdraws cash from banking system

SHANGHAI (Reuters) -China's central bank unexpectedly cut a key interest rate for the second time this year and withdrew some cash from the banking system on Monday, to try to revive credit demand to support the COVID-hit economy. Economists and analysts said they believe Chinese authorities are keen to support the sluggish economy by allowing a widening policy divergence with other major economies that are raising interest rates aggressively. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) said it was lowering the rate on 400 billion yuan ($59.33 billion) of one-year medium-term lending facility (MLF) loans to some financial institutions by 10 basis points (bps) to 2.75%, from 2.85%.

Caste in California: Tech giants confront ancient Indian hierarchy

America's tech giants are taking a modern-day crash course in India's ancient caste system, with Apple emerging as an early leader in policies to rid Silicon Valley of a rigid hierarchy that's segregated Indians for generations. Apple, the world's biggest listed company, updated its general employee conduct policy about two years ago to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of caste, which it added alongside existing categories such as race, religion, gender, age and ancestry. The inclusion of the new category, which hasn't been previously reported, goes beyond U.S. discrimination laws, which do not explicitly ban casteism.

Watch NASA roll out the mega moon rocket Space Launch System ahead of launch

NASA engineers have completed final tests of the Space Launch System (SLS), clearing the way for the mega moon rocket to roll out to the launch pad today instead of Friday as originally planned. The space agency was able to move up the date for the rollout -- when a transporter-crawler moves the 322-foot-tall SLS from the Vehicle Assembly Building to launch pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center -- because it completed key tests of the rocket's flight termination system (FTS). The FTS is a critical series of components that ensure a rocket can be safely destroyed after launch in the case of a major failure.

Angry China stages more drills near Taiwan as U.S. lawmakers visit

China's military said it carried out more exercises near Taiwan on Monday as a group of U.S. lawmakers visited the Chinese-claimed island and met President Tsai Ing-wen, who said her government was committed to maintaining stability. The five U.S. lawmakers, led by Senator Ed Markey, arrived in Taipei on an unannounced visit late on Sunday, the second high-level group to visit following that of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in early August, which set off several days of Chinese war games. The Chinese military unit responsible for the area adjacent to Taiwan, the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command, said it had organised multi-service joint combat readiness patrols and combat drills in the sea and airspace around Taiwan on Monday.

Is there room for a 3rd political party?
    • “Like it or not, inside American politics, you’re on one side or the other. There is no in between.”

    • “Were a centrist coalition to arise in service of ‘bipartisan’ policy objectives, it would shift the political center of gravity.”

    • “Purported constituents for a centrist third party aren’t as large a group as is often imagined and aren’t really centrists, either.”

    • “A successful third party is one that integrates itself or its program into one of the two major parties.”

    • “Favoritism for party candidates is a tough mountain to climb … Americans prefer to vote for a candidate they believe can win.”
