Rep. Steve Stivers, former chair of top Republican committee, to leave Congress early

Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), former chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, announced Monday that he will be retiring from Congress on May 16 to become president and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. Why it matters: Stivers' resignation will add breathing room to the Democrats' razor-thin majority in the House and create a special election in Ohio's Republican-leaning 15th congressional district. Between the lines: Stivers raised $1.3 million in the first quarter of 2021 and was reportedly considering a run for U.S. Senate in Ohio.

Republicans demand action against Maxine Waters after Minneapolis remarks

The Republican leader in the House of Representatives and an extremist congresswoman who champions โ€œAnglo-Saxon political traditionsโ€ have demanded action against the Democratic representative Maxine Waters, after she expressed support for protesters against police brutality. On Saturday, Waters spoke in Brooklyn Center, the Minneapolis suburb where Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by police last week. The California congresswoman spoke before final arguments on Monday in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis officer who knelt on the neck of George Floyd for more than nine minutes last May, resulting in the Black man's death and global protests.

Supreme Court rejects appeal over pickup seized at border

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from a Kentucky man whose pickup truck was seized at the Mexican border and held by the federal government for more than two years. The justices did not comment in leaving in place a lower-court ruling against the man, Gerardo Serrano. Serrano was crossing the border at Eagle Pass, Texas, on his way to visit relatives in 2015 when federal border agents searched and then took possession of his Ford F-250 pickup.

Couple: Man has tossed used cups in their yard for 3 years

An upstate New York couple may have finally solved the mystery of who's been tossing used coffee cups in their front yard for nearly three years. Edward and Cheryl Patton told The Buffalo News they tried mounting a camera in a tree in front of their home in Lake View to catch the phantom litterer. After Edward Patton called police, they waited and pulled over a vehicle driven by 76-year-old Larry Pope, who Cheryl Patton said had once worked with her and had had disagreements with her over union issues.

Rape victimโ€™s murder jury foreman was just 18: โ€˜Iโ€™ve grown some humanity since thenโ€™

In the more than a year that I've been writing about Sarah Gonzales-McLinn, who was essentially being held in sexual slavery in Lawrence, Kansas when she killed her rapist at age 19, I've never stopped wondering what the Douglas County jury was thinking back in 2015. Most news reports blandly referred to Hal Sasko, the former employer she drugged and then nearly decapitated in January of 2014, as her 52-year-old roommate. The jury quickly decided that Gonzales-McLinn had killed Sasko in an especially heinous, atrocious or cruel manner, too.

Black Lives Matter fence in Minnesota at center of row in city on edge

The message has endured outside their house in West t Paul, with block capital letters about 6ft high, since not long after George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was killed by a white police officer just a few miles away in Minneapolis last May. The timing of the row is especially sensitive as the trial of former officer Derek Chauvin, charged with murdering Floyd, approaches its conclusion. The entire Minneapolis-St Paul region was already on edge as a result, and tension was only heightened earlier this week by the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, by a white police officer in Brooklyn Center on the outskirts of Minneapolis.

Queenโ€™s birthday to pass without gun salute for second time

There will be no gun salute to mark the Queen's 95th birthday on Wednesday as she continues to mourn the loss of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. For the second consecutive year, the traditional 41-gun and 21-gun salutes in Hyde Park and the Tower of London on April 21 have been cancelled, the Ministry of Defence said. Her Majesty will continue to observe a period of mourning until Friday and as such, is understood to be reluctant to mark this year's anniversary.

Royal summit to decide future of monarchy to be led by Prince Charles and Prince William

The Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge will hold a summit to decide the future of the monarchy over the next two generations following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. In consultation with the Queen, Britain's next two kings will decide how many full-time working members the Royal family should have, who they should be, and what they should do. The death of Prince Philip has left the Royal family with the immediate question of how and whether to redistribute the hundreds of patronages he retained.

A US police officer has demonstrated the โ€œhuge differenceโ€ between a gun and a Taser in a viral TikTok video, describing how it is difficult to confuse the two items in an officer's arsenal, in the wake of Daunte Wright's death. The video posted from the account of a man named Brian B had about 6 million views and 1.4 million likes before the account was taken down after it became viral and triggered an extensive online conversation. The officer, appearing in his police uniform in the Tiktok video, can be seen loading his belt with both Taser and pistol before tapping the pistol as โ€œdominantโ€ and Taser as โ€œnot so dominant.โ€

They gamely presented a united front in the aftermath of the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral, strolling side by side and chatting amiably as they emerged from St George's Chapel into the sunshine. But the Duke of Sussex, 36, was afforded a rare opportunity to have a proper heart to heart with his brother, the Duke of Cambridge, his father and his grandmother on Saturday, as they returned to the confines of Windsor Castle. There, a couple of hours after the ceremony, when most other guests had melted away, senior members of the Royal family spent around an hour together, face to face for the first time in more than a year.

George Floyd's brother has revealed how he came within feet of Derek Chauvin on the first day of the trial, and while he felt disgusted, he had no desire to harm the police officer charged with murder. Terrence Floyd, 44, who is one of three brothers of the man whose live was taken last spring, has been attending every day of the trial of Mr Chauvin. He said it was intense and emotional, not only having to rewatch the video of Mr Chauvin kneeling on his brother's neck for more than eight minutes as the unarmed African American man gasped he could not breathe, but being in the court room while he was.
