The World Series championship won by the Dodgers on Tuesday night is its first in 32 years, a drought made all the more frustrating by the near-misses in recent seasons. Twice in the previous three years, the Dodgers made it to the World Series only to lose — and in 2017, to a Houston Astros team that cheated its way to victory. Just before the season started, they opened the cash spigot again for the newly arrived outfielder Mookie Betts, a game-changer at the plate and in the field.
There have been few high-profile Republican politicians more publicly and slavishly devoted to President Trump over the last few years than Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). Apparently that near-total fealty hasn't been enough for Graham to earn a little loyalty in return. The Trumpiest corners of the conservative ecosphere have made it plain in recent weeks that they're ready to abandon Graham — who is locked in a tight re-election race with Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison — even if it means losing his Senate seat.

Most new COVID-19 cases in Europe come from a mutated variant of the coronavirus spread from Spain by tourists, scientists said in a report Thursday. The coronavirus variant was first identified in northeastern Spain in June and was carried abroad by tourists and other travelers, the scientists said. There isn't enough data to suggest this variant, known as 20A.EU1, is more deadly, the team from the University of Basel, ETH Zürich in Basel, and SeqCOVID in Spain said.

Former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo warned on Thursday the West African nation faced a catastrophe if candidates in Saturday's presidential election do not resolve a standoff that has led to violent protests and an opposition call for boycott. Unidentified assailants torched several vehicles and assaulted residents in the commercial capital Abidjan late on Wednesday, police said, underscoring the tense atmosphere in a race marred by sometimes deadly clashes over President Alassane Ouattara's bid for a third term. On the last day of campaigning ahead of the vote, Gbagbo said he felt compelled to give his first interview since being arrested in 2011 for his role in a civil war sparked by his refusal to concede defeat to Ouattara in the previous year's election.
President Donald Trump brought a series of guests on stage with him during a campaign rally in Arizona on Wednesday, but raised eyebrows with his treatment of the only local Republican senator Martha McSally. Mr Trump initially said Ms McSally â “ who is also fighting for re-election next week â “ was â greatâ and â respected by everybodyâ . But the presidentâ s own tone was less than respectful, as he ordered the senator up onto the stage and told her she had â one minuteâ to speak.

The New York Post on October 14 published an article on Hunter Biden that has several red flags pertaining to the sourcing. Dorsey said the story violated Twitter's terms of service for distributing hacked materials.
For his part, Graham once relished his battles with the state's most conservative activists, calling the inter-party skirmishes “more fun than any time I've been in politics,” but with polls showing Graham in a statistical dead heat with Harrison, the senator is scrambling to resolve those well-documented problems with voters who have largely moved from the Tea Party to Team MAGA—even though the group's brand of politics couldn't be less in sync with Graham's own.
Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Donald Trump Photo illustration by Salon/Getty Images President Trump has repeatedly tried to cast doubt on the results of the presidential election and signaled that he hopes the Supreme Court's conservative majority can deliver him a win — but election law experts say that scenario is increasingly implausible because Trump has fallen so far behind in the polls. "It is unlikely the Supreme Court will decide the 2020 elections because it would have to be so close in a state pivotal to the Electoral College that litigating could make a difference," Rick Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California Irvine School of Law, told Salon.

Johnny Richardson, 25, and his girlfriend Micahia Taylor, 27, are accused of teaming up with Brandi Hawkins, a contract employee of the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency, to embezzle the money.
Unemployment claims are continuing to sink, but they're still far above even pre-pandemic records. Around 751,000 Americans filed unemployment claims for the first time last week, Labor Department numbers released Thursday revealed. Jobless claims hit an overwhelming record high in the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and have largely decreased since then.

A coronavirus strain that emerged in Spain in June has spread across Europe and now makes up a large proportion of infections in several countries, researchers said, highlighting the role of travel in the pandemic and the need to track mutations. Over the last two months, it has accounted for close to 90% of new infections in Spain, according to the research paper, authored by seven researchers with backing by Swiss and Spanish public-sector science institutions. It was posted on a so-called preprint server https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.10.25.20219063v1.full.pdf and is yet to be peer reviewed for publication in a scientific journal.

“Many are longtime Republicans wrestling with what they see as a choice between two lousy candidates.”
“Some undecideds turn out to be people who’ve long felt alienated from the two big political parties.”
“They’re not following the 24-hour news cycle. The election and politics are just not a high priority.”
“One common trait: at this stage of the game, the undecided voter doesn’t fit into an easy political profile.”
“More realistically...these voters may not be motivated to vote at all in the 2020 election.”
