A Republican official in Arizona resigned Tuesday from the board overseeing Maricopa County after a recording emerged of him criticizing his GOP colleagues for opposing a review of the 2020 election. During the meeting recorded surreptitiously last March, Supervisor Steve Chucri suggested two fellow Republican county supervisors opposed the review by Senate Republicans because they nearly lost their own 2020 races. Chucri apologized in a statement announcing his resignation and said he shouldn't have made the comments, adding “the political landscape has changed for the worst this year.
Florida authorities searching for the boyfriend of Gabby Petito said Tuesday that someone bearing his likeness was caught on a deer camera hiking through the wilderness. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said it is looking into reports that Brian Laundrie was spotted in the area. The announcement follows a Facebook post on Monday by a user who claimed he saw a man resembling Laundrie carrying a backpack around 6:17 a.m. in Baker, Florida, about 500 miles away from Laundrie's home in North Port.
Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell had a good chuckle on air Tuesday night after apparently discovering an error on the first page of former President Donald Trump's lawsuit against his niece Mary Trump, The New York Times and three of its reporters. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in New York, alleges that the Times participated in an “insidious plot” with Mary Trump to obtain his private tax files, which were then used in its bombshell reporting about his financial history, The Daily Beast reported. As she signed off her program and handed over to O'Donnell, Maddow said she had just received a copy of the lawsuit during the commercial break.
Robin Steenman, an Air Force veteran and white mother of three, is fed up with the way public schools in her community of Franklin, Tennessee are teaching kids about race. She believes that the reading materials and teachers' manuals are biased, specifically the lessons taught to second graders about civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. Kids leave class believing that white people are oppressors and minorities are victims, Steenman claims. While her only school-age child attends private school, Steenman nevertheless wants the public system, Williamson County Schools, to change its approach.
The last text Gabby Petito sent before she went missing while road-tripping across the U.S. with her fiancé set off alarm bells for her mother, who became fearful for the 22-year-old's safety after receiving the “odd” message. That's according to a newly-unsealed search warrant giving North Port, Florida, police permission to search a hard drive investigators found in Petito's white van, which she and Brian Laundrie, 23, had been using to tour the country's national parks. The text message read, 'Can you help Stan, I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls,'” the warrant states.
A camper who believes she saw Brian Laundrie around the time Gabby Petito went missing said she saw him "acting weird." Jessica Schultz tipped the FBI on the location where a body was found, which authorities thought belonged to the travel vlogger. The FBI and the Petito family's lawyer confirmed Tuesday that the remains belonged to 22-year-old Petito.
A sheriff said no charges will be filed against a South Carolina father whose 20-month-old boys died from heat after he forgot to drop them off at daycare and left them in his vehicle because he was under intense pressure at work. Watching investigators interview the father was one of the most heartbreaking things Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said he has seen in his 46 years in law enforcement. Brycen and Brayden McDaniel died from exposure to the heat as temperatures inside the SUV reached 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) on a muggy late summer day, Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford said.
Maybe you realize fall is in the air when you go to grab a sweater or light jacket before leaving your house or maybe it is when you have to get the rake out of storage because the leaves have turned from green to red and then fallen from the trees. Last year though, on a trip to the Okanagan Valley, The Weather Network found out a new way to tell when the seasons are about to change. Jenna Bower is an interpreter at the Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, and while we were touring the grounds, we spotted a deer grazing for food.

When President Joe Biden moved into the White House in January, a new book reports, he found his new home somewhat cold — with unusual remnants of Donald Trump's presidency. Peril, by the Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, contains headline-making reporting on the fraught final days of Trump's administration. "Trump's existence permeated the White House," the Peril authors write, according to an ABC News report.
The warrant said the messages seemed to show growing "tension" between Petito and Brian Laundrie. On Monday, the FBI also executed a search warrant at Laundrie's home, declaring it a crime scene. A search warrant filed last week by Florida law enforcement to search Brian Laundrie's computer cited phone communications between Gabby Petito and her mother, Nichole Schmidt, as evidence of growing tension in Laundrie's and Petito's relationship.

Marino, a Macomb County Republican, and Manoogian, an Oakland County Democrat, had a personal relationship that ended more than a year ago. Manoogian, 29, obtained a protection order last week from a judge, a few days after Marino, 32, was removed from House committees for alleged abuse. State police are investigating.
California is located in a hot-zone of fault lines that can rupture without warning. Parts of the San Andreas fault have not ruptured in over 200 years, meaning it's overdue for a high-magnitude earthquake commonly referred to as "The Big One." Here's what experts say could happen in seconds, hours, and days after the Big One hits the West Coast.

Except Armstrong is not in the tropics of Central America - he is in Ventura, California, just 60 miles (97 km) away from downtown Los Angeles. "I guess now I can say I am a coffee farmer!" he said, after planting the last seedlings of high-quality varieties of arabica coffee long cultivated in sweltering equatorial climates.

Haitians deported from the U.S. on Tuesday assaulted the pilots on board one of the flights when it arrived in Port-au-Prince and injured three U.S. immigration officers, according to a source familiar with internal reports of the incident. Unrest broke out shortly after a flight carrying single adult men arrived and released the men to Haitian authorities on the tarmac. The men assaulted the pilots of that plane, who work for a government contractor licensed to fly deportation flights for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while the families were still on board.
Investigators allege that a Colorado man charged with killing his missing wife decided to “hunt and control” her like an animal after she insisted on leaving him and later changed his statements as evidence in the case developed, according to a court document released Monday. A judge allowed the release of the arrest affidavit laying out investigators' case against Barry Morphew after ruling last week that there was enough evidence for him to stand trial for murder in the presumed death of Suzanne Morphew. Barry Morphew has pleaded not guilty and was released from jail Monday after posting a $500,000 cash bond.

Ready, but apparently not too ready: He said it's still about two months off and will go directly to the Supreme Court by Thanksgiving.

France should not have been surprised that Australia cancelled a submarine contract, as major concerns about delays, cost overruns and suitability had been aired officially and publicly for years, Australian politicians said. Paris has recalled its ambassadors from Canberra and Washington, saying it was blindsided by Canberra's decision to build nuclear-powered submarines with the United States and Britain rather than stick with its contract for French diesel submarines. Yet as early as September 2018, an independent oversight board led by a former U.S. Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter had advised Australia to look at alternatives, and questioned whether the project was in the national interest, a 2020 public report from the country's Auditor-General shows.

“Congress could save hundreds of billions of dollars by modestly paring back the benefit formula for future wealthy retirees.”
“Raising the retirement age reduces the number of beneficiaries, thereby reducing the costs of the program.”
“Social Security as we know it needs to be abolished and replaced with a better system.”
