In a move that would have seemed unthinkable two years ago, President Trump offered a full embrace, literally and figuratively, of Ted Cruz in a massive rally here Monday night, imploring a crowd of tens of thousands of supporters to turn out for his former political rival in a closely watched Senate race in Texas. In what is likely to be a highly scrutinized endorsement of the midterm elections, Trump and Cruz shared the stage at the top of an hour-long rally here, sharing a brief man-hug and a few arm squeezes before an estimated crowd of 18,000 in the heart of downtown Houston. It was the most public sign yet that Trump and Cruz, whose bitter battle for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination was one of the ugliest campaigns in recent memory, have put the past behind them — for now, anyway.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in New York City’s Washington Square Park on Sunday night, angrily reacting to reports that the Trump administration is considering a narrower legal definition of gender. A follow-up demonstration at the White House at 12:30 p.m. Monday has inspired a forceful response as well, with as many as 2,000 people on social media showing interest in attending, united under the hashtag #WeWontBeErased. “I am livid but clear-headed,” NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling said Monday before the White House protest.

Five fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls, some of the Museum of the Bible’s most prized artifacts, were exposed as fakes on Monday and pulled from displays. The museum, the brainchild of evangelical Christian businessman Steve Green, opened last year in Washington near the National Mall. The pieces, subjected to scientific tests in Germany, were deemed to have “characteristics inconsistent with ancient origin,” the museum said in a statement. The Dead Sea Scrolls are a series of fragments from approximately 930 manuscripts discovered near the Dead Sea in modern Israel during the late 1940s and 1950s.

Michael Avenatti, the attorney for adult film star Stormy Daniels, has reportedly been ordered to pay $4.85 million to settle a dispute with a former colleague in yet another financial blow for the prospective presidential candidate. A California judge on Monday ordered Avenatti to fork over the payment to attorney Jason Frank, who accused Avenatti of owing him millions for his prior work at law firm Eagan Avenatti LLC, The Associated Press reported. On Sunday, The Daily Beast reported that Avenatti has personally owed at least $1.2 million in federal taxes and corporate debts while enjoying an extravagant lifestyle in recent years.
President Trump has repeatedly condemned the thousands of Honduran migrants who are pushing toward the U.S. border, but how accurate are his claims? Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the U.S. We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given to them. True: The U.S. has been providing those countries with millions in aid, and Trump has frequently threatened to cut it off.
Some knew it as the “sad side” of Ellis Island. A century ago, the hospital complex at the historic Ellis Island immigration inspection station was the place where approximately one out of every 10 arrivals who were too sick to be allowed into the country were sent to recover, or to die. The 29-building medical complex — in its day the largest public health institution in the United States — was itself left to die when the immigration station closed in 1954.

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake admits he had doubts about the testimony of newly-confirmed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The retiring Republican senator added that hearing from the Kavanaugh protesters who confronted him prior to the vote influenced his decision to ask for a delay allowing the FBI to investigate the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh. “I felt for them,” Flake said of the two women protesters who confronted him in a Senate elevator.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott points out damage caused by Hurricane Michael as he flies over the Florida Panhandle on Oct. 11, 2018. Nearly two weeks after it made landfall on the Florida Panhandle, Hurricane Michael is still reshaping that state’s high-profile Senate race. The historic storm did the most damage in counties where Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who is now challenging Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, needs high turnout — by voters who may still be displaced from their homes and preoccupied with putting their lives back together.

Once bitter foes, President Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz have developed nothing short of a political bromance. Trump headlined his “Make America Great Again” rally in front of more than 17,000 supporters at the Toyota Center in Houston on the first day of early voting in Texas for the 2018 midterms. “You know, we had our little difficulties,” Trump said about his relationship with Cruz.

Giuliani said the conversations were occurring under a so-called joint defense agreement, which allows lawyers who represent different clients to exchange information without violating attorney-client privilege.

Officials in Saudi Arabia summoned Salah Khashoggi, the eldest son of the late journalist Jamal Khashoggi, to a palace in Riyadh on Tuesday, where he posed for photos with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. While the Saudis claim that the son “expressed ... great thanks to the Saudi King and Crown Prince for their condolences,” the pictures suggest otherwise, and with good reason. Mohammed bin Salman reportedly ordered the operation that resulted in the death, allegedly by torture, of Jamal Khashoggi earlier this month.
A New Jersey woman credited with helping foil a potential school attack in Kentucky said she was "protecting my babies" when she followed her gut and tipped off police about harassing Facebook messages that police say are linked to the suspect. The tip from the woman, Koeberle Bull, led Kentucky authorities to Dylan Jarrell, who possessed a firearm, more than 200 rounds of ammunition, a bulletproof vest, a 100-round high-capacity magazine and a "detailed plan of attack," Kentucky State Police said last week. The head of state police said he believed lives were saved when investigators interceded as Jarrell was leaving his driveway last Thursday.
