      Progressive dam about to break

House progressives are getting fed up with efforts to accommodate Republican senators โ€” and Joe Manchin. Why it matters: The White House is under growing pressure to accede to the left's demand to bust the filibuster. One of the clearest signs of this coming confrontation is a tweet this morning by Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.), a leading House progressive, who criticized Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) for announcing his opposition to a sweeping voting-rights bill passed by the House in March.

'I die every day': Hamas releases audio of captive 'Israeli soldier'

Hamas has released an audio clip of a man claiming to be an Israeli hostage held in Gaza, a week after the leader of the Palestinian militant group said he was willing to negotiate a prisoner exchange with Israel. In the recording broadcast by Al-Jazeera Arabic on Sunday, a man's voice says he is "an Israeli soldier held captive" by Hamas and that he โ€œdies every dayโ€. The authenticity of the clip has not been established, with the Israeli military saying it was investigating.

At least 150 Afghan troops have been killed or injured in the last 24 hours in a surge of attacks by Taliban militants as foreign forces withdraw, senior government officials said on Monday. Casualties were "shockingly high", one added. The Taliban seized Shahrak district of western Ghor province on Monday and forced Afghan troops to retreat to nearby villages after a heavy firefight, local officials said.

Crocodiles, snakes and bodies: Panama struggles to contain migrantsโ€™ dangerous exodus

Panama is struggling to handle a surge of migrants crossing the deadly jungles of the Dariรฉn Gap separating the country from Colombia โ€” many bound for the U.S., government officials, migration experts and members of Congress tell Axios. Why it matters: Vice President Kamala Harris departed Sunday on her first trip to Central America after being tasked with the migration crisis. Most migrants reaching the U.S. border still hail from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador.

J&J vaccine drive stalls out in U.S after safety pause

Safety concerns about Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine along with overall flagging demand for vaccinations have slowed its U.S. rollout to a crawl, leaving close to half of the 21 million doses produced for the United States sitting unused. J&J's vaccine was supposed to be an important tool for reaching rural areas and vaccine hesitant Americans because it requires only one shot and has less stringent storage requirements than the two-dose vaccines from Pfizer Inc/BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc. But Americans have largely eschewed it over the six weeks it has been back in use after a pause to study a rare safety issue, according to data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and interviews with health officials and pharmacists in eight states across the country.

Josh Hawley wants Anthony Fauci out, but he knows who really fumbled the pandemic

Josh Hawley is calling for the head of the man he claims is responsible for the United States' tragically inept response to the COVID-19 pandemic. G7: Biden calls for nations to boost their economies

The deal struck on tax understandably grabbed most of the attention at the G7 Finance Ministers' meeting, ahead of this week's Leaders' Summit in Cornwall. The message from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen here in London - which will be echoed by US President Joe Biden in Cornwall - is that all G7 nations, including the UK, should not even be talking about withdrawal of support. "G7 economies have the fiscal space to speed up their recoveries to not only reach pre-Covid levels of GDP, but also to support a return to pre-pandemic growth paths," said Secretary Yellen in a speech on Saturday.

Caron Butler can easily point to the lowest moment in his life โ€” the days he spent as a teenager locked in a solitary confinement cell inside a juvenile prison. The former UConn and NBA star planned to be at Connecticut's state Capitol on Monday to ask Gov. The bill, which requires almost all inmates be allowed at least 6 1/2 hours out of their cells and also limits the use of certain restraints, received final legislative approval Sunday morning.
