New Zealand's worst mass shooting in modern history appears to be the act of a lone gunman who attacked worshippers at two mosques out of racial hatred. The death toll from Friday's massacre in the South Island city of Christchurch has risen to 50 after another victim was located at one of the crime scenes, police said on Sunday. One person has been charged with murder while three other people apprehended with firearms are not believed to be involved, they said.
On a day when thousands mourned the 157 victims of last Sunday's Ethiopian Airlines crash, Transport Minister Dagmawit Moges said “clear similarities'' were found between that accident and a fatal Lion Air crash Oct. 29, 2018, in Indonesia. Both doomed flights involved the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, putting the onus on the American manufacturer to find the source of the catastrophic failure of its now-grounded plane. The flight data and voice recorders, or black boxes, were recovered in good condition and the preliminary information retrieved from them confirmed satellite-based tracking data that indicated the flights followed comparable paths, Moges said.

The concept, as articulated by Pentagon officials and cited briefly in this years' DoD “Missile Defense Review,” would be to use an advanced SM-3 IIA to “underlay” and assist existing Ground-Based Interceptors (GBI), adding new dimensions to the current US missile defense posture.

More than a year before the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved a secret campaign to silence dissenters, The New York Times reported on Sunday. American officials referred to it as the Saudi Rapid Intervention Group, the Times said. At least some of the clandestine missions were carried out by members of the team that killed and dismembered Khashoggi in October at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, suggesting his murder was part of a wider campaign against dissidents, the report said, citing the US officials and associates of some Saudi victims.
Officials in the California city of Lake Elisnore have previously had large crowds come and see the wildflowers that burst into a vibrant blaze of gorgeous colour as spring gets underway. It happens when it rains hard. India's richest man Mukesh Ambani, who controls oil-to-telecoms powerhouse Reliance Industries that is now worth many times the troubled business group run by his younger brother Anil, appears to have offered some kind of support to ensure Anil paid off a 5.5 billion rupees ($80 million) debt. If Anil didn't pay the debt, then he had been threatened by India's Supreme Court with a prison term. The nature of the backing and how it was delivered is unclear, but in a statement Anil Ambani thanked his billionaire brother "for standing by me during these trying times, and demonstrating the importance of staying true to our strong family values by extending this timely support".

The Senate has now joined the House in approving a resolution to terminate President Donald Trump's declaration of a "national emergency" to get billions of dollars that Congress refused to give him for a wall on the southern border. Even Republican Sen. Mike Lee, who led a last-ditch effort to strike a deal with the president, supported the 59-41 congressional rebuke. Trump's emergency declaration transforms his personal xenophobia into a national statement of government policy, repainting these communities as dangerous places to live, work or visit. Whether or not federal shovels enter the ground to wreak further havoc, the shadow cast by the declaration undermines the ability of these communities to promote the prosperity of their residents.
Michael Peck Security, Asia Could it happen again? If the only lessons of Task Force Smith was that inexperienced soldiers with poor training and equipment do poorly on the battlefield, or that a nation shouldn't let its army lapse into decay, these would be mere clichés In July 1950, North Korea defeated the United States Army. This first appeared several years ago.
Black box data recovered from an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed last week show "clear similarities" with a recent crash in Indonesia of the same type of aircraft, Ethiopia's transport minister said on Sunday. The announcement came a week after Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 plummeted into a field southeast of Addis Ababa minutes into its flight to Nairobi, killing all 157 people onboard. The disaster caused the worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft involved after aviation regulators noticed similarities with the October crash of an Indonesian Lion Air 737 MAX 8 that killed all 189 passengers and crew.

Facebook says it prevented 1.2 million of the videos from being uploaded to its social network, which has more than 2.2 billion users.

The special counsel has revealed in court filings numerous details about the project, which never came to fruition. Further information has come from Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer who was instrumental in the negotiations, in congressional testimony and in his guilty plea to a charge of lying to Congress about the project.

On Thursday, Google revealed that developer advocate Emma Haruka Iwao, with the help of the tech giant's cloud platform, calculated pi to 31.4 trillion decimal places, beating the previous record by nearly 9 trillion digits. To do this, Iwao's team used a program called ycruncher capable of computing pi to trillions of digits powered by 25 virtual machines run through Google Cloud's Compute Engine.
