Attack on Iran's Natanz plant muddies US, Iran nuke talks

The attack on Iran's Natanz nuclear facility is casting a major shadow over the resumption of indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran over resurrection of the international accord limiting Iran's nuclear program. Neither Iran nor the U.S. say the incident will crater the negotiations. But the attack and the destruction of a significant amount of Iran's uranium enrichment capability add uncertainty to the discussions set for Tuesday in Vienna.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) didn't have much to say when CBS News' Margaret Brennan asked her about her colleague and leading critic, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), aside from the fact that the allegations against him are "sickening." Gaetz is the subject of multiple investigations from the Justice Department and the House Ethics Committee centered around whether he violated sex trafficking laws and, separately, whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her to travel out of state with him.

China brands Japan's plan to release treated Fukushima water into sea as 'extremely irresponsible'

Japan's government has approved a plan to release over one million tonnes of treated water from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Tuesday. Japan's government argues that the release will be safe because the water has been processed to remove almost all radioactive elements and will be diluted. It has support from the International Atomic Energy Agency, which says the release is similar to processes for disposing of waste water from nuclear plants elsewhere in the world.

Tucker Carlson: call for Fox News to fire host after anti-immigration tirade

The head of the Anti-Defamation League has called for Fox News to fire Tucker Carlson, after the primetime host said immigration would โ€œdilute the political powerโ€ of Americans. Carlson was referring to โ€œwhite replacementโ€, a racist theory that has been cited as a motivation in deadly attacks. I think we've really crossed a new threshold when a major news network dismisses this or pretends like it isn't important,โ€ Greenblatt said.

EXPLAINER: How does an officer use a gun instead of a Taser?

A suburban Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot a Black man during a weekend traffic stop accidentally drew her firearm instead of a stun gun, the city's police chief said Monday. Although rare, a string of similar incidents has happened in recent years across the U.S. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said the officer โ€” later identified as Kim Potter, a 26-year veteran who has been placed on administrative leave โ€” had made a mistake in firing her gun at 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who later died. Video of the shooting taken from the officer's body camera includes audio of her saying โ€œHoly (expletive)!

Snake River in U.S. Pacific Northwest named most endangered by environmental group

The Snake River, crucial habitat for salmon and relied on by native people in the Pacific Northwest, is the most endangered river in the United States, according to an annual ranking released on Tuesday by the American Rivers environmental group. The organization, which focuses on the health and restoration of rivers and streams throughout the country, said the Snake River is threatened by four federal dams in Idaho, Washington and Oregon. It is putting its voice and clout toward efforts by local environmentalists to remove the dams and restore the river for salmon, as well as economic and cultural activity by native groups and others.

Italian region rejects Draghi's 'stupid' vaccine guidelines

The head of Italy's southern Campania region said on Monday he would ignore a government order to give the elderly vaccination priority and would instead focus on workers in order to safeguard the local economy. The central government has often clashed with the powerful presidents of Italy's 20 regions over COVID-19 policy, with a blurred division of power hampering efforts to speed up vaccine rollout and protect the most vulnerable. Italy has administered a first shot to 66% of those aged over 80, in line with the European Union average, but only 17% of those between 70 and 79, lagging its main partners, and has been reporting around 400 deaths a day in recent weeks.

Software fix planned for Mars helicopter

The long-awaited maiden flight of an experimental $80 million mini helicopter carried to Mars by the Perseverance rover is on hold while engineers test software to resolve a glitch that cropped up Friday during a pre-flight test, NASA announced Monday. If all goes well, the team hopes to determine a new flight date next week. Engineers initially expected to clear the Ingenuity helicopter for launch Sunday on a 30-second up-and-down flight to verify the 4-pound drone can, in fact, autonomously lift off, hover and land in the ultra-thin atmosphere of Mars.

Kansas City activists organize Plaza protest after police killing of Daunte Wright

In response to the fatal police-involved shooting of Daunte Wright in suburban Minneapolis, activists from the Kansas City area rallied to heighten awareness of and prompt reforms to address the killings of Black people in police custody. On Monday evening, the day after Wright's death, roughly 40 demonstrators gathered in Mill Creek Park near the intersection of West 47th Street and Mill Creek Parkway in a show of support for Wright. Several area activists pointed to his death as yet another example of excessive force by police that disproportionately affects people of color.

New York pension fund divests $7 million from Canadian oil sands firms

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) -New York's state pension fund is restricting investment in six Canadian oil sands companies because they have not shown they are prepared for a transition to a low-carbon future, the fund's Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said on Monday. The New York State Common Retirement Fund will divest more than $7 million in securities already held in the companies, and not make any further investments in them, DiNapoli said in a statement. Canada's oil sands hold the world's third-largest crude reserves and have some of the highest emissions intensity per barrel, due to the carbon-intensive production process of extracting tar-like bitumen from the ground.

Antibody cocktail โ€˜rapidlyโ€™ prevents and treats COVID, study finds. Hereโ€™s how

New results from a multi-stage clinical trial show that a cocktail of special antibodies can reduce risks of developing symptomatic COVID-19 by 81% if someone is not already infected with the virus. A separate trial found that the cocktail, called REGEN-COV, is also able to reduce people's chances of developing coronavirus symptoms if dealing with an asymptomatic infection by 76% after three days, the American biotechnology company Regeneron announced Monday. The cocktail was given emergency-use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration in November, and is currently being used to treat mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and children at least 12 years old who face high risks for severe disease and who are not hospitalized; it was the same drug given to former President Donald Trump when he tested positive for coronavirus in October.

The volcano spewed a tremendous amount of ash and hot gas in the biggest explosive eruption yet since volcanic activity began on the eastern Caribbean island late last week. Experts called it a "huge explosion" that generated pyroclastic flows down the volcano's south and southwest flanks, destroying everything in its path.

The judge in the Derek Chauvin case is orchestrating one of the nationโ€™s most widely watched murder trials. Meet Peter Cahill.

Days before the start of jury selection, an appeals court ruled that Cahill should not have thrown out a third-degree murder charge against Chauvin last fall. Then, at the end of that week, the city approved a historic settlement for the Floyd family, which threatened to derail jury selection. "Judge Cahill definitely has control of that courtroom," said Hennepin County Chief Judge Toddrick Barnette, who picked Cahill to preside over Chauvin's trial and the separate trial of the three other officers charged in Floyd's death.
