Israel, Egypt talk truce with Hamas, rebuilding Gaza Strip

Egypt and Israel held high-level talks in both countries Sunday to shore up a fragile truce between Israel and the Hamas militant group and rebuild the Gaza Strip after a punishing 11-day war that left parts of the seaside enclave in ruins. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry received his Israeli counterpart, Gabi Ashkenazi, in Cairo. The meeting is part of an effort to build on an Israel-Hamas cease-fire reached May 21 and to revive Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which have been dormant for more than a decade, Shukry's office said.

      U.S. plans cryptocurrency crackdown

U.S. financial authorities are preparing to actively regulate the $1.5 trillion cryptocurrency market amid growing concerns of a lack of oversight, the Financial Times reports. Why it matters: New efforts under the Biden administration reflect a break from the Trump-era approach, in which the administration at times encouraged cryptocurrency use within the financial system. Michael Hsu, who was appointed this month as acting U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, told the FT that he wants U.S. officials to work together to set a "regulatory perimeter" for crypto.

Does ignoring robocalls make them stop? Here's what we learned from getting 1.5 million calls on 66,000 phone lines

More than 80% of robocalls come from fake numbers โ€“ and answering these calls or not has no effect on how many more you'll get. To better understand how these unwanted callers operate, we monitored every phone call received to over 66,000 phone lines in our telephone security lab, the Robocall Observatory at North Carolina State University. Contrary to popular wisdom, we found that answering calls makes no difference in the number of robocalls received by a phone number.

Kentucky man pardoned by Matt Bevin for 2014 homicide is back in jail, held for Feds

Federal authorities have jailed a Kentucky man who received one of former Gov. Matt Bevin's controversial pardons in December 2019. Patrick Brian Baker, 43, was convicted of reckless homicide in the death of Donald Mills during a Knox County home invasion in 2014. In his pardon, Bevin described the evidence against Baker as โ€œsketchy at bestโ€ even though an appeals court rejected Baker's appeal with a judge noting the โ€œevidence of Baker's guilt was overwhelming.โ€

โ€˜Illegalโ€™ piranha found in Louisiana lake has officials worried there are more lurking

A piranha mysteriously turned up in a Louisiana lake โ€” and officials are on the hunt for others that may be skulking in the water. The red piranha, a species native to South America, was caught last week in University Lakes in Baton Rouge, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries. But piranhas aren't supposed to be found anywhere near Louisiana, leading wildlife officials to believe it was illegally kept as a pet and released into the lake.

Cancer patients who didn't seek treatment during lockdown overwhelming A&E

Cancer patients who decided not to seek treatment during lockdown are now overwhelming emergency units at hospitals across the country, health chiefs have warned. Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, said A&E units were struggling to cope with the number of people seeking emergency treatment for cancer, hip and knee operations and other serious ailments after deciding not to come forward for help during the pandemic. It comes after the NHS put some treatments on hold to allow hospitals to cope with an influx of Covid patients and to protect vulnerable cancer patients from infection.
