President-elect Joe Biden is expected to announce Linda Thomas-Greenfield as his nominee for ambassador to the United Nations and Jake Sullivan as his national security adviser, several people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post. Thomas-Greenfield spent 35 years in the Foreign Service, retiring in 2017. Sullivan was one of Biden's national security advisers during his time as vice president and was also a deputy chief of staff to Hillary Clinton when she was secretary of state.
A 15-year-old Milwaukee boy who allegedly opened fire at a suburban Wisconsin shopping mall on Friday, sending eight people to the hospital, has been arrested, police said Sunday. Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said the suspect was arrested Saturday night, adding that the shooting was the result of an altercation between two groups of people at Mayfair Mall. "We do know there was some sort of altercation, and that's when the bullets started flying," Weber said during a Sunday press conference.
Alone among Republican senators (indeed, alone among any senator in history), he crossed party lines to vote to convict President Trump on the charge of abusing his power by pressuring a foreign government to interfere in our election. And — not alone, exactly, but hardly in plentiful company — he has forthrightly condemned the president for stonewalling the Biden transition and undermining our democracy. These actions have taken real guts.
The Trump campaign is disavowing its association with attorney Sidney Powell after the far-fetched Trump campaign Thursday press conference when she claimed without evidence that the deceased Hugo Chávez, among others, was responsible for rigging the election. The campaign claimed that she "is not a member of the Trump legal team," even though the president and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani had previously identified her as being on the team. In the days since the press conference, Powell has made additional unfounded claims to conservative networks, and her claims have even been questioned by Fox News' Tucker Carlson, after she refused to produce her evidence on the show.
The election of the second Roman Catholic as president of the United States should be the occasion of great celebration among his coreligionists. Not all Catholics supported Joseph Biden, of course, though about half did. On Nov. 7, the head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, José Gomez, archbishop of Los Angeles, congratulated Biden and Kamala Harris, and five days later so did Pope Francis.
A Friday report from the Centers for Disease Control found that counties in Kansas that adopted a mask mandate saw a decrease in cases of the disease, while counties that opted out saw an increase by 100%. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released Friday found that counties in Kansas that adopted a mask mandate saw a decrease in COVID-19 transmission compared to counties that did not, which saw an increase in the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, on July 3 issued a statewide mask mandate, but counties were able to individually opt-out from her order.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) is no longer sure Trump will "do the right thing" and acknowledge his loss to President-elect Joe Biden, but he's certain Biden will be sworn in Jan. 20, 2021, he told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday's State of the Union. Hogan, who has been critical of Trump, said he voted for the late President Ronald Reagan this year. Pressuring state legislators in Michigan and other states to "somehow change the outcome with electors was completely outrageous," Hogan said.
15 family members in Arlington, Texas said they tested positive for the coronavirus after a small birthday gathering, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and WFFA reported. The relatives urged the public to not "be like my family and ignore the CDC guidelines" in a video that was posted to the City of Arlington's Twitter account. The family's warning comes ahead of the Thanksgiving Holiday, which is typically a time for families to gather.
Take, for example, the 1971 hijacking of Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305, which left Portland for Seattle on Thanksgiving Eve and was promptly commandeered by a man in a suit and sunglasses who claimed his name was Dan Cooper (later known as D.B. Cooper, owing to a news mix-up). Armed with a bomb, Cooper convinced the craft to land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where he collected from the FBI four parachutes and $200,000 in cash. The Mystery of D.B. Cooper (premiering Nov. 25 on HBO) revisits this infamous episode in American criminal history with an awareness that a definitive answer to its central question—who was D.B. Cooper?—probably isn't in the cards.
The Trump White House plans to hold indoor Christmas and Hanukkah parties despite Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warnings against large gatherings, Axios reported. An invitation for one of President Donald Trump's holiday parties seen by the outlet makes no mention of masks or any other precaution, even as the White House is dogged by continued cases of COVID-19. A White House official, who was not named, told the outlet that the events would be held indoors.
A large loggerhead turtle that washed ashore in Massachusetts Friday was among more than 150 cold-stunned sea turtles to strand on Cape Cod beaches in a three day span, according to a statement from the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The loggerhead, an adult male that weighed 350 pounds, was moved from Massachusetts' Great Hollow Beach by Truro Department of Public Works staff and brought to the sanctuary in South Wellfleet. It was then transferred to a van and driven to New England Aquarium's Animal Care Center.
Jonathan Pollard betrayed the United States. Did Israel betray Jonathan Pollard? One of the most infamous spy sagas in modern history whimpered to an end on Saturday, when the Justice Department let the parole restrictions imposed on former navy intelligence analyst Jonathan J. Pollard, 66, quietly expire.
President Trump lost his bid for re-election by 6 million votes and counting, and 74 electoral votes, and his legal team is consistently losing its court battles to disqualify President-elect Joe Biden's voters. "Trump told an ally that he knows he lost, but that he is delaying the transition process and is aggressively trying to sow doubt about the election results in order to get back at Democrats for questioning the legitimacy of his own election in 2016, especially with the Russia investigation," CNN reports, citing a source familiar with Trump's thinking. Pointing to "those who he claims undercut his election by pointing to Russian interference efforts," Trump "has suggested it is fair game to not recognize Joe Biden as the president-elect."
“Donald Trump defeated Donald Trump.”
“The victory was a vindication of a style of American politics that many feared was gone forever.”
“Biden took the opportunity to unite the Democratic Party.”
