Brazil sank a decommissioned aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean off its northeast coast, the Brazilian Navy said, despite warnings from environmentalists that the rusting 1960s French-built ship would pollute the sea and the marine food chain. The 32,000-tonne carrier had been floating offshore for three months since Turkey refused it entry to be scrapped there because it was an environmental hazard and the ship was towed back to Brazil. The carrier was scuttled in a "planned and controlled sinking" late on Friday, the Navy said in a statement, that would "avoid logistical, operational, environmental and economic losses to the Brazilian state," it said.

China successfully tested a Mach 5 weapon back in 2021—with one U.S. general calling the launch a near “Sputnik” moment—and Russia has been talking about the weapons since 2018, when it produced a sizzle reel of one hypersonic missile, the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal, blowing up Florida. Not to be outmatched, the U.S. has around 70 (yes, seven-zero) efforts to develop hypersonic technologies including bombers, missiles, and the engines to power them. In fact, just this week, Vladimir Putin announced imminent plans to test his frigate-launched Zircon hypersonic missile, which can supposedly reach speeds of Mach 9.

Doctors are warning of a dangerous fungal illness rapidly spreading across the country, especially affecting those living or visiting the California and Arizona areas. If you think it sounds like something from the cutting room floor of "The Last of Us" series, where a parasitic fungal infection devastates mankind, there are some very base-level similarities. Valley fever (also called coccidioidomycosis or "cocci") is a significant cause of pneumonia, said Dr. Brad Perkins, chief medical officer at Karius, a company that provides advanced diagnostics for infectious diseases.

On Jan. 13, Sierra Carter received a surprising phone call from her daughter's elementary school teacher. The drawing — a pink pig with a necktie in the shape of what could be interpreted as male genitalia — was brought to the teacher's attention by a classmate who'd informed them that Carter's daughter drew "boy parts on a pig." The 11-year-old, according to her mom, told her teacher that she drew a "bow tie," not "boy parts."
A private feud between two U.S. lawmakers made a splash on social media this week in the fallout of Congress voting to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from a committee, with both officials swinging accusations at the other. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took to Twitter Thursday to accuse her colleague, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of being a "coward" and lying about her on national television. The Democratic lawmaker swiftly fired back, accusing the Republican of failing to do her job in Congress by spending "almost no time" at her committee hearings.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide announced this week that they made clean hydrogen fuel from seawater without pre-treatment. Demand for hydrogen fuel, a clean energy source that only produces water when burned, is expected to increase in the coming years as the world (hopefully) continues to pivot away from fossil fuels. “We have split natural seawater into oxygen and hydrogen with nearly 100 per cent efficiency, to produce green hydrogen by electrolysis, using a non-precious and cheap catalyst in a commercial electrolyser,” said Professor Shizhang Qiao, the team's co-lead.

The spelunkers began to excavate, slowly and painstakingly, hoping they'd find something to make the effort worthwhile.

Players from the opposing teams — the Centennial High Huskies and the Santiago High School Sharks — tussled for the ball after a foul was called. Military leaders considered shooting down the high-altitude surveillance balloon on Wednesday but eventually recommended against this to President Joe Biden because of the safety risk from debris, officials said. The Pentagon said on Friday that another Chinese balloon was observed over Latin America, without saying where exactly.
“Streaming is beginning to look an awful lot like the old-fashioned analogue TV it was supposed to replace.”
“Streaming isn’t going away … You’re still going to have a lot of choice for a long time.”

“Streaming is still a game of content … It’s not a matter of who’s spending more, it’s who’s spending smartly.”
“Streamers are retreating from any sort of creative risk in favor of humdrum, lowest-common-denominator shows.”
