At least 71 people were killed after a pipeline ruptured by suspected fuel thieves exploded in central Mexico, authorities said on Saturday, as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador defended the army despite its failure to clear the site before the blast. Forensic experts filled body bags with charred human remains in the field where the explosion occurred on Friday evening by the town of Tlahuelilpan in the state of Hidalgo, in one of the deadliest incidents to hit Mexico's troubled oil infrastructure in years. A number of people at the scene told Reuters that local shortages in gasoline supply since Lopez Obrador launched a drive to stamp out fuel theft had encouraged the rush to the gushing pipeline.
At least one person has died in a crash on slick roads as a major winter storm moved across the nation's northern tier, bringing heavy snow and high winds to the Midwest on Saturday. The storm forced cancellations of hundreds of flights at Chicago airports and created a nightmare for many highway travelers, while severe thunderstorms cause damage in the Deep South. As the weekend snowstorm, driven by bitterly cold Arctic air, sweeps eastward, the National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings from the Dakotas to New England, cautioning that conditions in the Northeast “could approach blizzard criteria.” Ice was also a possibility in some areas in the storm's path.

A Kentucky Catholic high school is considering expelling students who were captured in viral videos taunting a Native American veteran on Friday. In the videos, a large group of teenage boys – including several wearing Covington Catholic High School sweatshirts – are seen chanting and surrounding a small group of Native Americans, who were attending the Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, D.C. One of the boys, wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat, smirks and stands close to an elderly Native American man, who was later identified as Vietnam veteran Nathan Phillips. Covington Catholic High School and the Diocese of Covington released a joint statement Saturday, saying that they “condemn the actions” of the students and apologize to Philips.
In my four earlier ones, I covered why December was lousy and why stocks are on the right side of a swift V-shaped recovery. U.S. stocks have climbed more than 10 percent since the market close on Christmas Eve. Assuming December 24 remains the bottom, this correction ended later in a calendar year than any correction or bear market ever.
The Duke of Edinburgh could be sent on a drivers' awareness course, it has emerged, as police continue to investigate a crash which left two women hospitalised. Chancellor Angela Merkel's Bavarian allies elected a new leader Saturday, a change that offers Germany's center-right a chance to move past their persistent bickering over recent years. The 52-year-old Markus Soeder was elected unopposed in Munich with more than 87 percent of the votes to lead the Christian Social Union. The CSU is the Bavaria-only sister party to Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, an independent-minded and sometimes-awkward ally despite the fact that they have a joint group in Germany's national parliament.
NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Many lunar eclipse festivities were canceled due to a flash freeze across the central and northeastern U.S. states on Sunday, with icy roadways rather than cloudy skies blamed by astronomers for spoiling the party. Star gazers from Los Angeles to New York had planned to gather at parks and observatories to keep their eyes on the sky for the total eclipse, known as a super blood wolf moon, expected to appear at 11:41 p.m. EST (0441 GMT). Days earlier, it seemed the biggest threat to the cosmic fun was cloudy skies but it turned out a wet, wide-ranging snowstorm followed by a deep freeze on Sunday made driving and outdoor activities too hazardous.
President Donald Trump made his first substantive offer of the government shutdown aimed at peeling off moderate Democrats and shifting blame with an American public that so far overwhelmingly holds him responsible for the month-long impasse. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected the proposal on Saturday, hours before Trump outlined it in a White House speech to the nation. Trump said he would extend protections for three years for so-called Dreamers -- young people bought to the country illegally as children --and make other concessions in exchange for his demanded $5.7 billion toward a border wall.

The mother of a boy filmed harassing a Native American man along with his friends at a rally in Washington DC has blamed “black Muslims” for the confrontation, without providing any evidence for the claim. The teenager was among a group of students wearing Make America Great Again (Maga) hats who were criticised for taunting the musician Nathan Phillips, surrounding him and jeering and chanting “build the wall, build the wall”. In an email to the news website heavy.com the mother of a Covington Catholic student, believed to be the boy prominently featured in footage of the incident, wrote: “Did you hear the names of the people were calling these boys?
A Belarusian model and self-styled sex instructor who last year claimed to have evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election said Saturday that she apologizes to a Russian tycoon for the claim and won't say more about the matter. Anastasia Vashukevich made the statement in a Moscow court that was considering whether to keep her in jail as she faces charges of inducement to prostitution. Vashukevich's statement appears to head off any chance of her speaking to U.S. investigators looking into possible collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump's campaign.
This car, finished in matte gray with red mirror caps and matte black wheels, has a red interior. It also has a VIN ending in 20201, for the year of the Supra's reintroduction and a 1 for its status as first Supra off the production line. Pristine examples of the fourth-generation (A80) Toyota Supra have been selling for insane amounts of money lately, and Toyota surely would like the new 2020 Supra to become collectible, too.
Wall Street is bunkering down for a wave of intense scrutiny as a group of progressive Democrats, including social media star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have joined a powerful House of Representatives committee overseeing banking activities. "It's a huge victory," said Ocasio-Cortez, at 29 the youngest member of Congress and a self-described socialist -- a word that shocks conservatives, who brandish it as a dire threat. Wall Street is trying to figure out the goals of the Democrats, now in charge of the House of Representatives after eight years of control by President Donald Trump's Republicans.

I say that these schools are not only anti-American, in that they exclude so many Americans, but are also not in the best educational interests of the students who attend them. For too many other institutions, faith provides the material to build a defensive wall rather than a strong foundation. There are about 27,000 religious private K-12 schools in the United States and over 1,000 religious colleges and universities.
